Creation man is nothing before the millennial impact of nature. The wind has been driving sand for centuries, creating dunes that do not pay any attention to us. Such majestic natural objects are found in different places. They are in desiccated deserts, the locations of prehistoric lakes, between land and sea.
The majestic barriers created by nature protected the earth for a long time from floods and severe winds. Due to the dunes, unique places appeared, where different kinds of animals live. Over time, they were able to adapt to the sandy and inhospitable environment. But some of the dunes are true record holders, surpassing all the others by their size and structure.
Dune in Pyla, France.
This massive sandstone mound cuts right into the age-old pine forest. The dune appeared on the shores of the Arcachon Bay of the Atlantic Ocean. Sand massif is the highest in Europe, climbing 106 meters up. The length of the dune is about three kilometers, and the width of the barkhana is half a kilometer. Strong winds, ebbs and ebbs reclaimed part of the land with sand. And the dune continues to move deeper into the mainland, expanding by five meters per year. This is a very popular place for tourists, the real treasure of the French Aquitaine. At the top of the dune you can even climb with a ladder, which in windy weather is still sanded. Big Daddy, Namibia.
At a height of 304 meters above the surface of Namibia towers this sand dune. “Big Daddy” attracts not only local residents, but also numerous tourists. After all, there is a unique opportunity to climb rock on the rusty-red slopes of this huge dune. From its top are unforgettable views that will be remembered for life. There will be something to tell your friends! But there are many sand dunes on the plateau of Susossflej, so to become the highest of them is a feat. The serial number of “Big Daddy” is the seventh. The dune is located along the Tsaushab River and is the highest in the Namib Desert. For tourists interested in the local arid climate, an upgrade to Big Daddy is considered an indispensable part of the program. And boast of the fact that I climbed the “Big Daddy” much more fun than the banal rise to Dune number Seven.
Local names are pronounced rather difficult for our language, but this should not deter genuine connoisseurs of nature. It is believed that the dune is one of the most beautiful places in the already picturesque Wales. Inislas is located on the border of land and sea. This place constantly changes its shape and color. The sand here is not lifeless – on the slope facing the sea, scattered wildflowers. The crest is constantly growing, as the wind continues its action, increasing its grains by grains. It is interesting that the dune is not just a beautiful natural object – it is a kind of barrier that protects the local ecosystem. Inislas stands as a sand wall, protecting vegetation from severe sea winds.
Dunes of Badyn-Jaran, China.
To visit these dunes, it is recommended that you get earphones in advance. In the Chinese desert of Badyn-Jaran are some of the highest fixed dunes on the planet. These windy sandy mountains rise to a height of 500 meters! People still have to learn all the properties of these dunes. It is surprising, at least, the fact that they are held in place by water, somehow seeping from the lower lake. But this is not the only secret of the dunes of Badyn-Jaran. There is an interesting phenomenon called “Singing Sands”. It is manifested in the fact that when the upper layer is blown out by the wind, an electrostatic charge is formed in the lower layers. As a result, people can listen to a thick low-frequency noise similar to the sound of a propeller flying overhead.
Mountain Tempest, Australia.
This mountain of 285 meters high attracts one of the highest coastal dunes in the world. This attracts tourists, many of whom travel to desert Queensland just for the sake of ascent to the sandy slope of the dune. And the mountain is held in place because of the vegetation, which roots go deep down and do not allow the soil to spread. Dune is a tasty morsel for both passing tourists, and for professional photographers. After all, there is an excellent panoramic view of the area from Brisbane to Sunshine Coast.
Dune Rig-e Yalan, Iran.

Rig-e Yalan is in the desert, from which only a few kilometers to the hottest place on Earth. There the temperature reaches 65 degrees! And although the temperature at the top of this famous dune is clearly smaller, it is not recommended to lift the peak in the hottest time of the day. Cerro Blanco, Peru.
This dune is a loner hiding between the towering Andes and the coastal mountains in South America. The very name of the object from English is literally translated as “a small peak”. It is small relative to the peaks of neighboring Andes. Dune is considered by many to be the highest in the world, with an indicator of 2,133 meters above sea level and over neighboring plains and rocks. Dune is distinguished by its white sand, as well as a simple possibility of lifting it. To conquer no special preparation is required, it is quite enough sandwiches and a water reserve. Dunes Mesquite Flatts, California, USA.
When you mention the Valley of Death National Park, these sand dunes immediately come to mind. But Mesquite Flatts occupy not more than a percent of the entire area of the reserve. And let the dunes are not the highest, they do not reach thirty meters, amaze their size. The sandy hills stretched for several kilometers, allowing guests and locals to stroll through the desert. In hot and dry climates, soil is difficult to form on an ongoing basis. Dunes are formed by sand, blown quartz and travertine sand. Humid air from the ocean to this area does not reach, leaving the sand in a kind of trap.
Rub al-Khali, Saudi Arabia.
And the name of this dune in Saudi Arabia is translated as “empty quarter”. However, its area is so large that it would be enough for a small state – 647.5 thousand km². In this sandy sea, the dunes rise like waves in the sea, one after another. But in this area between the hills there are large plaster plains. In these dunes, you can feel like Lawrence of Arabia, climbing a 76-meter high hill of red quartz sand. A spectacle of the vast desert will allow you to tune in to a philosophical harmony.
Great Sand Dunes, Colorado, USA.
Speaking of dunes, it is impossible to avoid the Great Sand Dunes. They are in the US state of Colorado. It seems that there are dunes and not the highest, and not the largest in area, but they contrast perfectly with other natural elements. Dehydrated sandy deposits descend to Medan Creek, and on the other hand they begin to climb to the rocky mountains, bluish away in the distance. The local sands are quite soft, and because of the small dune area of 77.7 km², fans of surfing on the sand, sledges and just downhill are coming here. People turn into real children, and the dune – a usual hill on the site.
