In 1975, the world saw a shocking thriller “Jaws”. Directed by 28-year-old director Steven Spielberg. The film was an adaptation of the novel by Peter Benchley. The budget of the tape about the terrible shark-killer was 7 million, and the fees around the world exceeded 470 million. From this moment, and took the count of the career of one of the most outstanding directors of Hollywood. The whole world, with bated breath, watched as a white shark stormed the resort town.
Few people know that the films are based on real events about the sequence of shark attacks on the beaches of New Jersey in 1916. Although the total number of real encounters with sharks in the world is rather small, there is a myth of the vampirism of these creatures. In total, no more than 10 people die from shark teeth per year. Each story of the attacks of these large fish becomes instantly the property of the press, occupying the front pages of newspapers. We will tell below about the most shocking cases of human collision with sharks.
In Colonial America there was no artist more famous than John Singleton Copley. Usually he painted portraits, but he was given glory, among other paintings, by the canvas “Watson and the Shark”. It shows a blond boy who is in the water and calls for help. A shark sails towards it, which has already opened its mouth in anticipation of its prey. This picture was created on the basis of real history, which happened in 1749. Brook Watson was 14 years old, he was part of the crew of the merchant ship. When his ship was in Havana, the boy decided to swim in the harbor. There he was attacked by a shark twice. Witnesses of the terrible tragedy were the sailors of the ship Brook, they tried as quickly as possible to pull the young man out of the water, saving his life. However, the help was too late. During the fight with the shark, Watson lost his foot, later the doctors also amputated his leg to the knee. But this did not break the spirit of the young man, he continued to lead an active life. For as long as nine years, Brooke sat in parliament, having even managed to become vice-mayor of London. Fame to Watson was the fact that his case was the first documented when a man could survive a shark attack.
This case is noteworthy because the first recorded shark victim in the history of California appeared. In addition, the attack occurred in front of many people. The tragedy occurred on December 7, 1952 with a 17-year-old teenager on the Pacific coast. At a distance of 40 meters from the shore, Wilson sailed with his friend. One of the witnesses suddenly noticed how Wilson suddenly became unnatural and sharply move from side to side. Suddenly Barry shouted, calling for help. Witnesses even saw a shark, which almost completely lifted the young man out of the water. Barry quickly sank again under the water, and then reappeared on the surface. At the same time he shouted, he called for help and waved his hands. Among others, hurried to help the unfortunate, was his friend – Bruckner Brady. He swam with four other volunteers to Barry. Rescuers were able to hug a man from a predator. But while they all sailed to the shore, the shark pursued them. As a result, Wilson got serious wounds on his left foot, on his right hip, buttocks and back. They were so deep that the young man died before the whole team reached the shore.
Robert Pamperin received a sad reputation due to the fact that he was fully eaten by a large white shark. The man, along with his diving colleague, Gerald Lehrer, in 1959, sailed near the coast of San Diego. Between the swimmers was 15 meters. Suddenly, Lehrer heard Robert’s cry for help. When he turned around, he saw a friend in a strange upright position. Lerer rushed to the rescue, but Pamperin sank slowly under the water. When Gerald dived, he saw his comrade in the mouth of a huge seven-meter shark. Lehrer said that Pamperin was already half swallowed, and a dangerous predator was dragging him down.Lerer emerged to the surface to collect air, and then again dived to scare away the shark. But it did not help, the diver went to the shore for rescuers. For two whole hours the team was looking for at least some remains or traces of Pamperin. But all that could be found at the site of the tragedy – equipment for scuba diving deceased diver.
This story also happened to a diver. Omar became one of four, who died from teeth of sharks in 1984. Conger, along with his colleague Chris Rem, sailed 150 meters from the shore. Between swimmers was only 5 meters. Then out of nowhere appeared a large white shark, grabbed Conger and dragged with her. A few seconds passed, and the predator again appeared at the surface, already with the diver in the mouth. The shark began to swim in the direction of Remus, releasing his partner next to him. Chris was able to pull a friend ashore, but by that time he had already died, having lost a lot of blood. Based on numerous injuries of the hands, legs and buttocks, it was subsequently concluded that the shark was about 5 meters in length. Over the next two weeks, three more people were attacked in these places, but all of them were still alive.
Bethany Hamilton at the age of 13 became the best among the same-age surfers in Hawaii, as well as in all of the United States. In 2003, the girl’s name hit all the editorials when she was attacked by a large tiger shark. On the morning of Halloween, the girl went surfing with her brother Byron, a friend of Alana and her father Holt. Bethany was lying on the board, while her left hand was lowered into the water. Suddenly, a shark attacked the girl and bit her arm beneath her shoulder. Fortunately, the comrades acted fairly quickly. They pulled the wound with a tourniquet and dragged Bethany ashore. There she lost her senses in anticipation of the doctors. The girl eventually lost 60% of her blood, but she managed to survive. Several operations were performed, and infection was avoided. Within a month the brave Bethany again found herself on the water, catching new waves. It happened on Thanksgiving. The previous balance can not be returned, but on the whole, the athlete quickly returned her skills, showing the same aggressive style that she had. Adapting to the new conditions was difficult for Bethany, besides, she refused any special adaptations. The girl continued to compete in surfing, winning even in 2005 the national championship.
This story dates back to 2004. Then, near the city of Westport, California, Randall Fry, along with Cliff Zimmermann, were diving. The tragedy happened at a depth of 4.5 meters. Fry was suddenly attacked by a shark, while his friend was very close. Zimmermann turned away for only a second, and suddenly he heard behind him a whistling sound and the movement of water. All that Cliff had time to see, as the shark fins flashed along with part of Fry’s body. Just a couple of moments, the predator with prey disappeared into the depths. The water around the frightened diver turned red … Cliff quickly swam to his boat, the benefit of it was only 45 meters. The body of Fray rescuers could find only the next day. On it were found traces of bites that go from one shoulder to the other. This indicated that the man was attacked by a large white shark. She was able to separate the head of the unfortunate person from his body.
The way this person met with a shark, it was even possible to accidentally take pictures on a film. The tragedy occurred in 1954. Henry Burs along with his two friends played with the seals right in the ocean near the island of Lady Julia Persia off the Australian coast. Suddenly a large white shark appeared. She swam to Henry and quickly bit his foot. When the comrades heard a piercing cry, they found a separated limb floating nearby. Bursa managed to drag him into the boat, losing consciousness, he managed to tell his blood group.Subsequently, the victim said that he even tried to fight with a shark, taking away his leg. Burs himself was a photographer-amateur of the underwater world, doing also directing. Shooted off the shots of the attack on him by a white shark, he was then able to use to reconstruct those events in the filmed documentary film “Cruel Shadows.”
The death of Indianapolis.
June 30, 1945 during the attack of the Japanese torpedo the American cruiser Indianapolis was sunk. Of the 1,196 sailors caught in the water, 900 managed to use life jackets. The next morning this place was already swarming with sharks, sensing prey. What could a helpless crew counter to the invasion of hungry predators? Four days went on a nightmare. Only then rescuers on airplanes were able to pull sailors out of the water. It turned out that of the 900 crew members who got into the water, by that time only 317 survived. This tragedy became the most serious sea disaster in the history of the American fleet. True, it is not known exactly how many seamen died directly because of the attack of sharks, and how many – because of other reasons.
Attacks of sharks in Matavan Creek were preceded by two attacks of these predators in the ocean off the coast of Jersey on July 4, 1916. Just 6 days after these tragedies, Capt. Thomas Cottrell noticed a white shark in the shoals of Matavan Creek. But the locals did not attach importance to this news, considering it just a panic in the light of recent terrible events. The first victim of a shark-cannibal was the twelve-year-old Leicester Stiwell. When he was swimming with friends, the shark attacked him from below. Local men decided to kill the predator, lost in shallow water. But the shark found them first. One of the rescuers was Watson Fisher, he took the fight with the monster. The man even managed to injure the shark, but she fell behind, only tearing out part of the right leg from the groin to the knee. Fisher died a few hours later, becoming the second victim in an hour. But these events did not alert the locals. Not far from the place of the tragedy, the next day the boy was bitten by a shark by Joseph Dunn. The predator damaged the leg of a teenager, but three friends were able to repel him from a predator. Joseph was taken to the hospital, where in the end he could save his leg. Only two days later the shark was able to catch in the Gulf of Raritan. When the cannibal was opened the belly, about 7 kilograms of human flesh and bones were found in it.
It was Rodney Fox who made history, becoming the most famous victim of a shark attack. The reason for the degree of damage received, as well as the fact that a person could survive. The tragedy occurred on December 8, 1953, when Fox was fishing from his boat. Suddenly the ship was attacked by a large white shark, which bit the human body and tried to drag it under the water. The shark released Rodney for a few moments and pounced again and again. During the second attack, Fox’s hand was in the mouth of a predator, but the man was able to pull it out, albeit at the cost of serious damage. The shark again released the man, attacking him for the third time. Now she had already dragged Fox to the bottom of the ocean. He was almost drowned when the shark finally let him go. Rescuers were shocked by the sight of the victim. On his right hand, the bones were visible all along his length. Only here it was necessary to impose 94 seams. The lungs, stomach and chest of Fox were severely damaged. He was not even removed from the wetsuit, since only he helped to stay in place with the insides. Such a measure, most likely, saved the life of a fisherman. Already an hour after the attack, he was taken to the hospital, while Fox was in full consciousness and did not give signs of shock. It is a miracle that the main arteries were intact. The operation lasted 4 hours, in total 360 joints were applied. Coming to himself, Fox managed to tell his shocking story.
