The fact that the planet is constantly extinct species, has long been frightening no one. Strictly speaking, than to be surprised? After all, this process is quite long and takes tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years. But in recent years, in some places of our Earth with animals, there are some mysterious incidents that are difficult to explain rationally. Quite recently in two states in the south of the USA there was an incomprehensible loss of thousands of birds, and the rivers of Arkansas were marked by the mysterious death of one hundred thousand fish. Sometimes scientists still find rational explanations for such events, but more often than not they remain misunderstood. We will tell below about the most famous cases of mass death of animals that have occurred recently.
It’s hard to say what kind of feelings the residents of Arkansas experienced when, on one not a perfect day, they suddenly began to fall on their heads dead thrushes. Literally thousands of dead birds. It happened at the very beginning of 2011. It looked pretty awful, many hastened to see this as a sign. And two days later the tragedy was repeated in another state – Louisiana. This time about five hundred dead birds fell from the sky. Scientists from around the world are looking for an explanation for this mysterious and frightening incident. At the same time, there are dozens of the most diverse versions, first of all, naturally, people consider the most rational of them. Initially, it was believed that the fault was some mysterious disease or poisoning. But numerous studies of bird bodies showed only the presence of injuries and hemorrhages. Obviously, they are a consequence of the fact that a lot of blackbirds literally crashed into each other in flight. How could this happen? It is possible that the bird flock was in a confined space at altitude. And the reason for the disorientation was the neighboring stormy front. But the authorities did not neglect the potential danger. Employees of the Environmental Protection Agency quickly appeared at the site of the fall of the birds. All of them were wearing masks and special protective suits. Environmentalists cleared the area of bird bodies, and the roofs of houses and roads were treated with a special antibacterial fluid.
In 2006, scientists suddenly were surprised to find that the number of bees had drastically decreased in the world. It turned out that a huge number of these useful insects were suddenly dying for no apparent reason. Scientists even derived a special term for this phenomenon – the colonization disorder of bee colonies. The US Department of Agriculture published data according to which in 2009 about 29% of the bee colonies were killed, the next year this figure increased to 34%. For the period of observations, nearly a hundred reasons have accumulated, explaining the rapid extinction of honey-bearing insects. Considered and fungal infections, and mass poisoning with pesticides, scientists have tried to relate this phenomenon to global climate changes on the planet. But so far no one can declare responsible, why the bees are massively killed. More recently, new studies were born, which revealed even more alarming facts. Scientists from the University of Illinois have determined that not only honey bees perish. Over the past 20 years, the number of bumblebees in the four most common species has decreased by 90 percent!
Bats and their white nose syndrome.
2006 was a landmark not only for bees. In New York, at the same time found a deceased from an unknown fungal disease bat. Since then, this attack has manifested itself in 14 US states and two Canadian provinces. Over this time, more than a million volatile mammals have died. The press quickly fanned the sensation by dubbing the disease with a syndrome of the white nose. It turned out that he was primarily affected by those mammals that prefer a nocturnal lifestyle. But it turned out that the fungus of animals does not kill at all. It only penetrates the mouth and nasal cavity of the creature at a time when it is dormant. As a result, bats wake up earlier than the time planned by nature. Animals leave their inhabited caves to find food and replenish themselves with energy. But since the awakening is too early, the mice either are overcooled, or simply can not find food, starving to death. Many environmentalists and environmentalists have researched hundreds of caves and abandoned mines. As a result, the fungus – the cause of the early awakening of mice, was found. Scientists even created a medicine against it. Only here and the reasons of appearance of this disease remained unclear.
Sardines and birds off the coast of Chile.
For two months, the unexplained death of millions of sardines, thousands of flamingos and penguins along the coast of Chile continued. Sixty large pelicans became victims. At first it seemed that such a phenomenon has natural and interrelated causes. First, the penguins began to die in March 2009, about 1200 dead birds were found on one of the remote Chilean beaches. Only a month passed and not far from this place millions of herring fish were thrown ashore. Soon in the north of Chile, thousands of rare flamingos living in the Andes, suddenly left their habitual nests. As a result, on the rocks there were about two thousand still unhatched chicks. Completed a horrific picture of the death of 60 pelicans. They were found in May in the central part of the coast of South America. The most terrible thing is that no one could explain the mass death of living beings. And in this case, many unconfirmed versions were put forward. They talked about global warming, and about the pollution of the atmosphere. In all suspected some hitherto unknown disease. As a reason, even over-active fish extraction off the coast of Chile was called. Perhaps the reason for the death was very dry and hot weather, which in those months was in these places.
Black Australian dolphins.
At the end of 2008, an accident occurred – about 60 Australian black dolphins suddenly threw themselves ashore. It happened on the rocky coast of the island of Tasmania. A week later mass suicide repeated, now 150 dolphins were thrown out. In early January 2009, 45 sperm whales accumulated in the shallows near the shores of Tasmania, all of them died. The last mass ejection completed the picture. It happened in March 2009, all on the same coast of Tasmania, 194 black dolphins were thrown out. Several dozens of large dolphins, the bottlenose dolphins, also joined them. Then the authorities made an official statement, in which 140 sea animals were declared dead. The rest, fortunately, managed to be saved. People used for this purpose ropes and motor boats, and also water motorcycles. More than 100 volunteers took part in the operation. They were able to literally push the dolphin out into the ocean. These cases have been carefully studied by specialists, but they have not been able to work out a single reliable version explaining what happened.
Hippos in Uganda.
In 2004, in the Ugandan National Park named after Queen Elizabeth, in East Africa, a terrible tragedy occurred. In drinking water, anthrax spores suddenly appeared, from which 300 hippos died. The fact is that in periods of drought in the country a lot of standing reservoirs are formed. It is there that often a dangerous deadly bacterium appears. Outbreaks of anthrax have occurred repeatedly over the past half century. But it is in such water bodies that they like to spend most of their time hippo. As a result, they have experienced a terrible outbreak of anthrax. In June alone, 82 hippopotami and 9 buffalo were killed in the country. Animals had access to water from the Kazing Canal, connected with the lakes of Edward and George. These water bodies are located in the park itself. In this case, scientists were able to pinpoint the cause of the massive death of huge aquatic animals, but this did not help at all.
Pelicans on the west coast of the USA.
Eyewitnesses describe what is happening with the pelicans on the west coast of the United States in 2009 in one word – “madness”. Birds in the vast territory from Oregon and to Mexico began to beat suddenly against the sides of boats and glass cars. They joined in groups and massively rushed under the wheels. Then inadequate behavior led to the death of several thousand birds. But the reasons remained incomprehensible. Some researchers, who then took part in the rescue of birds, believe that some sort of virus is responsible for everything. It was he who drove the birds crazy. Perhaps the fault was a series of fires in Southern California, after which poisonous substances could enter the ocean. There is a theory that explains this behavior of birds unusual for that time of the year weather. She caused malfunction in the diet of birds, they disoriented in space and began to behave strangely.
In 2010, in Mongolia, the winter was very cold and snowy. This was followed by a very arid summer. As a result, many herbivores throughout the country began to lack food. Such misfortune was nicknamed “itching” in the country. This word literally means repeating from time to time a natural disaster. In Mongolia, itching is a common occurrence, only in that year its scales were much higher than expected. As a result, millions of head of livestock died in the country – horses, sheep, camels, goats, yaks and cows. This tragedy attracted even the attention of the United Nations. A special program was created – the Mongolian shepherds were given money to clear pastures from the dead animals. For any country, a tragedy of such magnitude is a serious blow. What can we say about Mongolia, where the majority of the population is closely connected with cattle breeding and depends on domestic animals. The consequences of that case were rather heavy.
Sea turtles in El Salvador.
On the coast of the Republic of El Salvador in January 2006, bodies of sea turtles of several species were thrown out. For a long time scientists could not understand what caused the tragedy. However, a few years later, the International Wildlife Management Organization announced the cause of those events. Then a minimum of 200 sea turtles suffered from a “red tide”. This destructive phenomenon arises from the accumulation of tiny algae on the surface of the water. A “red” tide is called because of its color, this is what water becomes. A large number of algae generates a deficiency of oxygen in the water, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia begin to accumulate there. They were the culprits of the death of turtles.
Battle of the frogs.
Mass death of animals for no apparent reason occurs periodically throughout the history of mankind. This story belongs to the distant past, but it’s also not worth forgetting about it. It happened in 1754 in the village of Windham in the territory of present Connecticut. Then something happened that led to the mass death of these amphibians. No, they were not collected for a restaurant, the reasons were natural, but incomprehensible. Frogs have made battle with each other! At the same time the battle was so fierce that everything around was literally strewn with bodies of water inhabitants. Historical documents say that at this time in the same lands there were frequent bloody clashes between the colonizers and local Indians. This caused a large number of casualties on both sides. One hot June night, Europeans, who were almost all drunk at the time, suddenly heard numerous shots that were heard from all sides. It was clear – the Indians attacked! But in the morning it turned out that these sounds were created by frogs, who began to fiercely fight with each other everywhere. And this happened both in the reservoirs and outside them. Nobody could then explain what made the peace amphibians crazy. Only a flash of anger in their ranks destroyed several thousand frogs.
