When many people hear the word “prison”, they chill through their bodies. Immediately the images of the Middle Ages, prison tortures and bullying get into my head. Such paintings formed the basis of many films. Far times are in many ways shrouded in legends, we are trying at least in this way to lift the veil.
Today the prison of a modern person is no longer associated with bullying and torture. The reason for this was a change in society, the world outlook of people, the existence of laws. Nevertheless, during the evolution of mankind, the prison has already become one of its attributes.
First of all, this is an indicator of the humanization of society, because isolation is much more humane than execution. Do not forget about the practical side of the issue – prisoners perform public works. Today in the whole world, from the death penalty, as from the highest penalty, they generally try to get rid of, replacing it with life imprisonment.
However, declaring such a measure as human, we know little about the living conditions of the prisoners themselves. But they can be completely different – someone undergoes rehabilitation or enjoys comfort, and someone suffers torture and humiliation. Let’s talk about the ten most cruel prisons of the modern world.
is the largest prison in New York. In a super-modern city since 1932 this prison is located, which is famous for its numerous cases of cruelty and violence. There are frequent riots, the suppression of which sent special forces. Not so long ago in this prison there were up to 1000 clashes between the authorities and prisoners. However, the new laws somewhat softened the situation, because now a prisoner who has attacked a cellmate or a guard can be sentenced to an additional prison term. As a result, the number of insurgencies declined to 70. Nevertheless, according to people who came out of there, the conditions in this prison are worse and more dangerous than even in the most criminal areas of New York. Today there are about 14 thousand prisoners on the prison island, the prison itself has become a place where beatings flourish, sex scandals and abuses of personnel.
Syrian military prison in Tadmora.
The skin can be creepy after information that there are still used medieval instruments of torture using sticks, ropes and axes. Civilized Europe also can “boast” of its brutal prison – in Paris is La Sante, the only one, incidentally, in the capital. The institution was built in 1867. During the Second World War, political prisoners were also detained there, including members of the Resistance. Today, there is always a depressing atmosphere over the prisoners. As a result, prisoners are in such a state that they are ready to swallow rat poison, fight their heads against the wall, there are forks only to cease their stay there, ending their lives. In 1999, 24 people out of 160,000 prisoners committed suicide in the whole of California, 124 people died in the French prison for suicides. About the horrors of La Sante for 7 years, said in her diaries Veronica Wasser, staying there as the chief doctor. In prison, the cells are full, the shower can be taken no more often than twice a week, the products are of poor quality … All this causes the invasion of lice and skin diseases. There are so many rats here that prisoners are forced to hang their things to the ceiling. La Sante was opened in 1867, among its famous prisoners were the poets Paul Verlaine and Guillaume Apollinaire. Prison as it was, and remains a place of violence, debauchery and atrocities. Weak inmates turn into slaves. And the guards do not stand on ceremony with the prisoners, using cruel means. Veronica Wasser described the case of a prisoner who was thrown into the punishment cell for resistance. Two weeks later, he entered the infirmary dehydrated – the guard closed his access to water.

The commission came to the conclusion that the detention of prisoners here is generally detrimental to their health, and for the sick it is dangerous for life. Also, the prison did not escape the problem of violence. As early as 1982, 22 prisoners and 4 guards were seriously injured during the riot. The uprising in 2006 led to the death of two and the wounding of 100 criminals. In prison, executions are carried out, for this until recently a gas chamber was used, now it is replaced by lethal injections.

However, a corrupt system allows rich prisoners to get the most comfortable seats. In general, here there is only 1 guard for 150 prisoners. Not surprisingly, such harsh conditions lead to riots.
