The biggest stadiums

The question of which stadium is the largest in the world in the football environment is unlikely to remain unanswered. Any fan will immediately call the Brazilian “Maracanu”.

However, this is a misconception – this stadium, popular in Rio de Janeiro, is not only the most-not the most, but it is not even among the twenty largest in the world. Once upon a time, “Maracana” at the World Cup finals in 1950 between Brazil and Uruguay did contain a record 200 thousand people.

However, this attendance was due to standing places in the stadium. Today, everything is done for the benefit of the audience, after reconstruction and installation of plastic seats, the capacity was only 89 thousand spectators, which discarded Marakan from the leaders.

As we will see, besides, in the list of the ten largest stadiums, not all are and always used for European football, and almost all of them are located outside the Old World. But they can not be called football, either.

In America, for example, on such venues are held matches on soccer. Similarly, in European stadiums, you can sometimes see competitions in rugby and other sports. A huge sports building will always find its use.

The biggest stadiums

So, the biggest stadium in the world is the Stadium of the First of May (Rungnado 1st of May Stadium).

It is located in the city of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. The capacity of the building is 150 thousand people. The stadium was built in 1989, all seats are sessile and individual, which is important for this capacity. The stands are covered with a petal-shaped roof, which also covers the eight-storey building of the stadium itself. Despite the volumes, the architecture here is quite dynamic. The stadium received its name from the name of the Rungra stadium, on which it is located, and also in honor of the Day of International Solidarity of Working People, Pervomaia. It was on this day that the building was solemnly opened. In 1988, South Korea hosted the Olympics, in contrast to this competition in the summer of next year, the North Koreans held at the XIII World Festival of Youth and Students. At the same time in 2002, the neighbors of the World Cup in Pyongyang decided against this background, too, to assert themselves – choreographic records were set in motion here. Now the show of gymnasts is put here regularly. Although the stadium Pervomaia is formally listed as the home stadium for the DPRK national football team, it still plays elsewhere. It is difficult to talk about the demand for such a unique structure in terms of capacity. Usually the number of spectators does not reach half of the number of seats. Often on grandiose choreographic and gymnastic shows of participants there is more than the spectators themselves. Thus, the First May Stadium is the most striking example of gigantomania, inherent in both the socialist system in principle and the regime of North Korea itself.

The second place in terms of capacity is occupied by the Indian Youth Stadium, which in Bengali is referred to as Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

It is also known as the Salt Lake Stadium. There is a building in Calcutta, India. The stadium constructed in 1984 now houses 120 thousand people, the last reconstruction here was made in 2001. Aluminum roof here covers the stands not completely, but only by 70%. Individual seating is mainly in the central podium, while the rest of the area is given to benches. The stadium is equipped with its own diesel generator, there is also its own water supply system. The most famous sporting event, which was held here, was the III South Asian Games. The stadium is home to the national football team of India and three clubs: Mohammedan, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

The third largest in the world is the Beaver Stadium, which is in University Park, County Center County, Pennsylvania, USA.

The capacity of the sports center is 107282 people. The stadium was built in 1960, and the last time it was recently reconstructed in 2008.The building is considered university. Direct translation of the name sounds like “Beaver Stadium”, but this animal has nothing to do with it. The stadium was named after James Addams Beaver, who was Governor of Pennsylvania in 1887-1891. At the end of his career, Beaver’s policy was headed by a local university. Record on the attendance of the stadium was established in 2002, even before the last alteration. There were 110753 spectators. Shops are everywhere, except for the second and third tiers of the stands. In the stadium they play American football. Beaver Stadium is home to Penn State State Knightney Lyons, a member of the National Student Association (NCAA).

Next in capacity is the Michigan Stadium, which is in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

Its capacity is 106201 people. The university stadium was built in 1927, housing then 72 thousand, but each subsequent reconstruction increased this figure. Most of all there was in 2003, the stadium was visited by 112 118 spectators. There is only one thousand less than in the Pennsylvania stadium. I must say that such a correspondence duel does not give Michigan peace. In December 2007, a new reconstruction began, which plans to increase the capacity to 108 thousand, which will bypass the principal competitors. The planned cost of works is 226 million, and the work should be completed in 2010. However, all the same, the Michigan Stadium is the first in the US in terms of average attendance. Standing places are not there at all, though, and individual seats too. Here is the club of American football Michigan Woolverainis, from the NCAA.

In the fifth place is without exaggeration the legendary stadium Azteca (Estadio Azteca), in the city of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.

Its capacity is 105064 people. The building was constructed in 1966 and was reconstructed before the World Cup in 1986. Here, matches were played at all stages – match opening, group stage, quarterfinal (it was just Maradona who scored his famous goals to the British “Hand of God” and “Goal of the Century”). At the “Aztec” were played semi-finals and the final of that championship. The Mexicans already had experience of holding the World Cup and just at this stadium. In 1970, the matches of all stages were held here again. At the Aztec entered and the Olympics, in 1968 there were football matches. Also, the legendary stadium hosted the Confederations Cup in 1999. The name of the building is directly connected with the Aztec past of the country. There was a time when the stadium was renamed “Estadion Guillermo Canedo”, since the name “Azteca” belonged to a television company that did not want to give a beautiful name. However, the fans did not like the new name, the stadium was still called “Aztec”. As a result, the authorities were forced to officially return the name. The stadium consists of four tiers, divided into seven sections. The roof closes the stands by 70%, and it’s not just America’s football club, but the Mexican national team.

Next in capacity is the American Ohio Stadium, which is in the city of Columbus, Ohio.

Its official capacity is 102329 people. Belongs to the state university stadium. The building was built in 1922, and the last time it was reconstructed in 2001. But sports events are held only in the daytime, because there is no lighting here. All seats are sessile, although in the stands are located benches everywhere, except for the five central sectors with individual seats for club members. The central entrance itself is decorated in the form of a rotunda. The stadium itself has an oval shape, this is due to the fact that it originally had treadmills and a track-and-field competition was held there. In those days, the South Stand was not at all, the arena looked like a horseshoe, which was in some ways symbolic. Treadmills were removed only in 2000, at the same time the field was dropped down several meters. In this case, the stands of the lower tier were completed so that the stadium became purely football. The southern tribune did not appear immediately either. It is curious that the funds for reconstruction were allocated exclusively by the club and through donations, neither the city nor the university allocated any finance for reconstruction. The field here is artificial. The record of attendance here was established in 2008, when 105711 spectators gathered here. The stadium in Ohio became famous for the fact that the loudest noise of the crowd of fans ever registered at the stadiums was recorded here. But this achievement was already interrupted by Liverpool Anfield Road. Here is the American football club Ohio State Buckkey, speaking at the NCAA. Until 1999, there was also a club of soccer players from the MLS League Columbus Crew.

Further on the capacity is followed by the DTC of the Texas Memorial Stadium (Austin, Texas, USA).

Capacity of the sports complex – 101096 people. And this stadium belongs to the university. It was built in 1924, and the last reconstruction took place here in 2009. However, after the completion of the work, new transformations were started, which should increase the capacity to 115 thousand. In the stands besides individual seats there are also benches. Particularly stands the western tribune, whose height is not less than thirteen floors. Most recently, the Northern Stand was rebuilt, located just outside the gate, and the second tier, which looks like a continuation of the Eastern platform, was built on it. Significantly changed and the facade of the stadium. At the moment, work is underway on the South Stand, which should become a symmetrical North. It is planned that even in case of installing fully individual seats the stadium will be the largest in America and the third largest in the world. If you leave the shops altogether, then perhaps the Texas stadium will overtake the Indian, which is in second place. The stadium was named after the legendary coach in that state, Darrel Royal. The word Memorial in the name appeared thanks to the university committee of war veterans, who thus paid tribute to all the graduates of the stadium, who died in the battles. The stadium is played by the American football club Texce Longhorns of the NCAA.

The eighth in the list is followed by Melbourne Cricket Ground, located in Melbourne, Australia.

The Australians themselves call their MCG structure, sometimes even even shorter – G. The capacity of the stadium is 100012 spectators. It was built a long time ago – back in 1854. Then, naturally, the configuration and capacity were completely different. The last reconstruction here was carried out in 2006. The stadium is also known for the fact that there are the world’s tallest lighting towers. Above the stands there is a visor, but it does not completely cover them. Owns a complex of Melbourne Cricket Club. At the stadium are matches of the national teams of Australia for cricket and football. Also, a couple of local clubs and several teams of Australian football (local mix of rugby and soccer) play cricket here. In 1956 it was this stadium that hosted the Olympic Games, becoming their main arena. Then, specially for this event, a major reconstruction took place. At that time, the capacity of the stadium was 120 thousand people, the record figure here is 130 thousand, which the stadium took in 1959. During the passage of the Sydney Olympics in 2000, the stadium hosted matches of the football tournament. In January 2009, the stadium was recognized as one of the seven wonders of the sport. MCG is located in the Olympic Park, with the main part of which connect the transitions over the railway tracks. To the left are the rowing canal and a host of sports facilities, including the courts where the famous Australian Australian Open is held. By the way, these closed courts have been built here for a long time, remaining for a long time unique in their kind.

The ninth place belongs to the Neyland Stadium, Noxville, Tennessee, USA.

It was built in 1921, and the last reconstruction here took place in 2009. As a result, its capacity has even decreased. Now it is 100011 instead of the previous 102037. This has thrown the stadium from the former seventh place ranking to the ninth. The stadium in general is constantly being reconstructed, on average every 5-10 years. However, until 2006, all activities led only to an increase in capacity, the highest indicator was the bar reached in 2006 of 104079 spectators. The stadium itself, as is customary in the US, belongs to the university. On its stands are installed benches. The stadium received its name in honor of the successful coach-innovator of the local team of General Robert Nyaland. This stadium was included in the expanded list of 70 stadiums that claim the right to host matches of the World Cup 2018 or 2022 in the event that the United States is chosen as the host of the mundial. Here is the American football club Tennessee Voluntirs, from the same NCAA league.

The tenth place in the list is the famous Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain.

Holds the famous football giant 98934 spectator. This is the biggest stadium in Europe. It was built here in 1957, and its last reconstruction took place in 1998. According to the UEFA classification, the stadium has five stars – the highest rating, allowing to hold matches of the highest level. As a result, there were two Cup Winners’ Cup finals of 1972 and 1982, a Champions Cup final of 1989 and a Champions League final of 1999. At the Camp Nou passed matches of the European football championship in 1964 and the 1982 World Cup. On that stadium the stadium took six matches, including a match-opening and a semi-final. By that time the capacity of the building in general was 120 thousand people. The name of the stadium is translated as New Field, as the stadium was new in relation to its predecessor. The official name is the Estadio del Club de Futbol Barcelona, but all of them continue to call it Camp Nou. As a result, in 2001 it was decided to give this name also officially. According to the requirements of UEFA in 1998, all seats were equipped with individual seats, so all the shops were removed in the stadium. Therefore, to reduce the loss of seats, the level of the field had to be lowered and due to this, the stands were extended. The management of Barcelona has plans for a large-scale reconstruction worth 250 million euros. According to the projects, a roof will appear over the stands, and the capacity will increase to 106,000 people, which will make it possible to bypass Aztec. The stadium itself belongs to the football club “Barcelona”, which plays on it.
