Snowboarding

Snowboarding

(snowboarding, from English snow – “snow” and board “board”) – descent on snow-covered slopes of mountains on a special sports equipment – snowboard. This is the original winter sport, some extremals continue to engage even in the summer, having chosen for riding on the boards sandy slopes. The result was sandboarding (sandboarding, from English sand – “sand”, board – “board”).

For snowboarding and sandboarding, special boards are used – snowboards consisting of a sliding surface (deck) that is in contact with the snow, on which foot supports are mounted, and a metal edge designed to control the movements of the snowboarder (“perekantovki”).

Snow hunters began to use snowboards for over a hundred years ago, and the first officially recorded descent from the mountain on the board took place in 1929. But it was not until 1965 that Sherman Poppen of Muskegon, Michigan, made for his daughter two skis a snurfer, a device remotely resembling a modern snowboard and equipped with a rope , through which the control of this design was carried out.

In just one year, the production of schnferers (first as children’s toys) and the improvement of the design by such enthusiasts as Jake Burton (founder of Burton Snowboards), Tom Sims (founder of Sims Snowboards), Mike Olson, Dmitry Milovich (founder of the company Winterstick), Jake Burton, who equipped the snuffer with a foot rest, etc.

The first boards were rather unstable and poorly controlled, which led to the prohibition of the use of this sport equipment at many ski resorts of the time. But this did not prevent the growth of the popularity of boarding, and in 1979 the first snowboard championship was held, and in 1998 this sport was officially presented at the Nagano Olympics.

Modern snowboarding is divided into hard (speed skating on the prepared slopes with the use of special equipment, riding techniques, etc. (racing, carving)) and sports, including freestyle and freeride.

Freestyle

(from English freestyle – “free style”) – descent, which involves performing jumps and various acrobatic tricks. Passes on a specially prepared track and includes such sports disciplines:
– big air (from English big air) jumps from a springboard, providing the presence of a springboard and a hill with a landing area for landing;
– bordercross (crosscross) – a cross on boards (boards), in which several snowboarders participate simultaneously (and the athletes are allowed not only to “cut”, but also to push or hold the opponent’s hands);
– jibbing – skating on “rails” (constructions consisting of pipes welded together), handrails, benches, stairs, parapets and other elements of city buildings;
– slop-style (slope – style) – skating on a line consisting of trampolines, handrails, pyramids, providing for clear execution of tricks, as the fall inevitably leads to loss of speed and, as consequence – impossibility of performing the following tricks;
– slalom – high-speed (speed – up to 100 km / h) descent along the route marked on the slope in a certain way;
– highpipe (half of the “half”, pipe – “pipe”) – skating (with the implementation of flips, rotations and other tricks) in a special half-trumpet of snow, whose height is just over three meters, and the length is eighty meters .

Freeride

(from English freerclasse – “free riding”) – riding on difficult and dangerous slopes. This type of sport is preferred by experienced snowboarders.

In the first snowboarding championship, many athletes participated.

This is not quite true. In 1979, near the city of Grand Rapids (Michigan) held a world championship in snoring.Jake Burton, who was going to participate in these competitions, improved his board, adding footrests. As his sports project was different from the others, a separate competition was created, in which Burton was the only participant and winner.

All snowboards are the same.

So it may seem only to a novice, unfamiliar with all the subtleties of snowboarding. In fact, the boards are different both in construction and in their main purpose. There are several types of board classification. For example, allocate snowboards are hard, soft and designed for freeriding. Alpine boards are long, narrow, with rigid fastenings, allowing to develop the highest speed and are mainly used for such sports disciplines as slalom and slalom-giant (such boards are the shortest and with the smallest radius), carving and extreme carving (long – sometimes more than 2 meters, differing in specific torsion stiffness). Boarding on virgin land (freeride) is often characterized by a large length and slip area, and also have the ability to “float” in the snow, which makes it much easier to ride. And, at last – the most widespread soft boards of small length, with poorly expressed orientation and low rigidity, most often used for freestyle and jibbing. For beginners it is best to use soft universal boards (All-Mountain) and only then to master other types of boards. There is also a division of snowboards into freeride boards (universal), freestyle and mountain (carving) – according to the style of skiing you have chosen, as well as classifying by size and size into symmetrical (twin-tip), directional and wide (wclasse ).

Any snow boots will fit for snowboarding.

When buying a board for riding, be sure to pay attention to the type of attachment. After all, soft mounts, which are a platform, connected with snowboard special straps, equipped with snaps, are fully compatible with any soft shoes. But only special plastic hard boots are suitable for rigid attachments.

Snowboarding is an extremely traumatic sport, and it’s more difficult to ride on a board than on skis.

Of course, falls during the descent are possible, but you should consider some features of the snowboarder’s equipment, making this process less traumatic. Firstly, the shoes are not as stiff and heavy as skiers, therefore, the possibility of a foot injury is minimized. And the stretching of the ligaments is not so easy to get – the legs fixed on the board do not leave, during the fall the light board causes much less inconvenience than the skis with sharp socks, equipped with the same ski poles (which, as is known, in the fall fly anywhere). A great advantage of snowboarding equipment is that if you climb to the top yourself – the light board can carry even a child, while skis and ski boots are a serious burden, not for every adult in strength. At the same time, it should be noted that snowboarders, like many athletes, have their own “professional” diseases – curvature of the back (due to the side bar), problems with the knee joints (due to the heavy load on them during skiing) .

Snowboarders are uncomfortable to use the lift – you have to climb sideways.

This is not the case – in fact the snowboarder skates in this position, because the feeling of discomfort is usually experienced only by beginners, who are using the lift for the first time. Usually, after several lifts, the athlete ceases to experience inconveniences, and even if the slope is equipped with a chairlift or a car-lift – there can be no discomfort at all.

Learning to skate on the board is a long and complex process.

Absolutely mistaken opinion – the initial skills of handling snowboard can be learned within a few hours, then – the case of practice.Realizing the essence of the movements, in a week you will be able to competently skate, honing your skills.

In order to master a snowboard, you have to go to the Alps.

In fact, snowboarders and skiers from all over the world simply adore the snow-covered slopes of the Caucasus, in addition, many professional snowboard parks and stadiums have been built, for example, in the Moscow suburbs (Yakhroma) and in Moscow itself (Krylatskoe, Kant ski complex) , Piter (Okhta Park), Ufa (snow-park Ak-yort), Novosibirsk (Sheregesh), Chelyabinsk region (Beloretsk, Trekhgorny), Murmansk region (Sorochany, Khibiny, Volen park), Novokuznetsk, Samara, Kamchatka, e.

Outfit for snowboarding is extremely expensive.

Undoubtedly, high-quality equipment for practicing any kind of sport is not cheap. However, there are many ways to master a snowboard, even without having in your pocket a couple of thousand dollars for small expenses. Firstly, many well-known companies offer sets of equipment for both beginners and experienced snowboarders at a very reasonable price – within $ 300, and the equipment used in good condition can be purchased quite realistically. Secondly, in order to master the basics of skiing skill on the board, the equipment, rented, is also suitable. In the summer, it will be possible to purchase equipment from well-known manufacturers at a very low price – in fact, the products of the past season are sold at a discount of up to 50% of the original cost of the goods.

Snowboarders, especially beginners, drink before going down, so as not to be afraid.

In practice, this happens extremely rarely – the first descent does not really bother novice riders. But closer to the evening, many on the base are slightly tipsy, but again not out of fear, but only because during dinner they prefer to drink mulled wine to keep warm.

Most often, riders encounter foxes, squirrels and various forest birds.

Mistaken opinion – on a snowboarder’s road, dogs and … photographers who failed to step aside in time are much more likely.

Many girls (guys), who started snowboarding, found a friend (girlfriend) among the riders.

Indeed, this happens, but the couple who have risen on the board after the wedding, much more.

You can listen to “Voice of America” on the radio of a snowboarder.

In fact, the walkie-talkies used by athletes in order to facilitate their location in the mountains have a range of only 5000 m.

There are no homosexuals among snowboarders because they can not afford extreme sports.

This is not true – even among professionals there are people with non-traditional sexual orientation.

Because of global warming, snowboarders sometimes have to carry huge bags full of snow.

The snow necessary to create a slope that is more or less suitable for skiing can hardly be accommodated even in very large bags. In large international competitions, if the weather has let down, special guns are used.

There are many rappers and informal people involved in snowboarding, many of whom use drugs.

Indeed, among snowboarders there are also informal people, and people who adore rap (especially in freeride, halfpipe, etc.). Among sportsmen, such people are quite rare, and for the use of drugs, any professional is threatened with disqualification, because people who are addicted, for example, to marijuana, are found only among amateurs.

Only children of wealthy parents can be snowboarding.

This is a myth. In many post-Soviet countries, there are state sports schools, where young athletes are provided with the necessary equipment – both a board and boots for snowboarding. Parents buy only suitable for training costume.

Snowboarding is a sport for fearless and reckless people.

In fact, any professional sportsman is not at all devoid of restraint and sense of self-preservation.Another thing is that you have to be able to fight with your fear, and also do everything to minimize the possibility of any danger during descent. That’s why the professionals before the start must examine the track, think through the optimal trajectory, evaluate the quality of the snow cover, according to which one or another style of driving is selected. “Bezbashennostyu” most often differ lovers who, unable to correctly assess all the pros and cons of the track, fearlessly rush forward and often fall into unpleasant situations and sometimes get pretty serious injuries.

To master a snowboard, you must go to the mountains or a specially equipped park.

Undoubtedly, if you want to get a lot of impressions and practical experience. But if you are a beginner and want to acquire elementary theoretical skills that will facilitate later development of a snowboard, you only need to purchase a new game Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip (company Nintendo), managed by the Wii Balance Board (platform for dealing with yoga, fitness, aerobics). At your disposal is a board that performs the function of a snowboard, with sensors attached to it, recognizing any movement of a person standing on the board, and a large plasma screen located on the side. Easy button press, route selection – and here is not an entirely realistic but plausible game space, abundantly provided with prompts appearing on the screen. By the way, balancing on the board is not so easy – although it does not swing so much, a good load goes to the legs and back muscles, especially if you are struggling to avoid collisions with various objects, people and animals, then business appearing on the “highway”. Of course, the load is incomparable with those that the athlete experiences on a real slope, but for novices such a simulator is a good help.
