in Greek means “the science of the human soul,” and therefore studies human activities from a psychological point of view. A psychologist is a person with a higher psychological education whose main job is to help another person to understand themselves and solve their problems on their own. In our age, psychology is very in demand. This subject is included in the curriculum of universities, and also, many use the services of psychologists to solve their personal problems. As a result, there were conflicting opinions, both about the science itself and about the work of psychologists. Let’s consider some of them.

Psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist – terms that denote the same thing.

Yes, these terms are consonant, but there is still a difference.
A psychologist is a specialist who has received an education in the field of psychology. Because psychological education is not medical, a psychologist (unlike a psychiatrist) has no right to prescribe drugs. Its function – psychological counseling, helping healthy people to understand difficult life situations (for example, difficulties in communication, family relationships, decision-making, stress of various kinds).
A psychiatrist is a person who has received medical education and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders (diseases). His patients are people who have serious deviations in the psyche (for example, manic-depressive psychosis). For treatment, the psychiatrist uses medicines and various types of psychotherapy.
A psychotherapist is a specialist, most often for the use of non-pharmacological methods. Usually such specialist owns one of the directions of psychotherapy. Psychotherapists work with both mentally healthy people and people in conditions on the verge of health and disease (neurosis, depression). For treatment, the therapist uses certain psychotechnics (rational psychotherapy, psychodrama, Eriksonian trance, NLP, transpersonal psychotherapy, body-oriented psychotherapy, psychosynthesis) that help solve the client’s problem.

Psychologists always impose their opinions.

This is not quite true. In fact, a psychologist, after listening to a person, tries to find the most optimal solution for the problem, helps get rid of old prototypes and “opens his eyes” to new perspectives. A person already has to decide how to act in this or that situation.

Psychologists never make mistakes.

You can argue with this. A psychologist is the same person as all other people, and therefore he is prone to make mistakes. The only thing that is peculiar to psychologists is to remain calm in any unforeseen situation, and therefore they are not prone to get nervous and experience emotional negativity.

The psychologist always knows how to help.

This is far from the case. It is not the duty of the psychologist to solve the problem for the person himself. The only thing that he can help is to listen and help to understand his feelings. A psychologist is, roughly speaking, a “vest”, into which one can cry. After all, it is sometimes enough for a person to speak out – and he is doing much better.

A psychologist at first sight can understand “what a person breathes”.

This is not quite true. Indeed, a psychologist is able to run through the possible actions of a person in a given situation. Can determine the nature and temperament of a person, but for this it will take him some time to communicate with the client, perhaps to invite him to pass a series of tests, according to which the expert can draw certain conclusions about the direction of the client’s personality.

Every psychologist is familiar with magic.

Complete absurdity. A psychologist and a magician are completely different concepts. A magician is a person who does not advertise his occupation, as a rule, learn magic secretly, and nothing can do without his spells and improvised means. The psychologist, in his work, applies only the knowledge obtained by him in a professional educational institution.

Only wimps turn to psychologists!

In fact, those who really need mental support think so. Such people will not admit that it is hard for them. They, usually, suppress their problems with alcohol, and it happens that some lead themselves to suicide. There is nothing wrong with the fact that a person resorts to the help of a psychologist. In our time, it has become even fashionable to visit this specialist.

Healthy people do not go to psychologists!

Far from it. It is a healthy person, therefore, that is healthy, that he has someone to talk to. After all, as is known, to keep everything in itself is very, very harmful. Therefore, probably, women live longer than men – they will cry and it’s easier to get better on the soul, men are not used to crying.

Only mentally ill people turn to a psychologist.

This opinion is completely wrong. As already mentioned, psychologists work with healthy people who need support and help from outside.

It is not worth investing in someone else’s problems.

In another way, this is called “taking dirty linen out of huts.” However, on that he and the “stranger” to listen to a person, tell what to do and how to be, and forget about him, and not run telling everyone right and left about his problems.

Yes, who is he to teach me to live!

The psychologist does not teach anyone, he only helps to cope with the person with his emotional experiences, gives an opportunity to speak out and prompts a compromise solution.

You can not help matters with words!

Well, why? Sometimes moral support gives such a charge of energy that a person is ready to turn mountains off. Not in vain because athletes and participants in various games (KVN, for example) carry a support group with them.

The psychologist will solve all my problems for me.

Wrong opinion. The function of the psychologist is to advise the client, to create such conditions under which the person himself is able to find a way out of the situation that has arisen. Turning to a psychologist, a person should be ready to change himself and his attitude to the world around him, and not expect that the specialist will change the world around him.

There are no problems with the psychologist.

Why? There are. After all, psychologists are also people. Sometimes a psychologist is able to solve his problems faster and more efficiently. But sometimes he has to turn to his colleagues for help. And this is quite normal. After all, the wisdom is not to solve all the problems yourself, but to solve them in the best way and with the least amount of time and nerves.

Psychologists are trouble-free and kind, they help everyone and always.

It should not be forgotten that a psychologist is a profession that does not necessarily have to be turned into a lifestyle. It is the psychologist who will not indulge human weaknesses and whims, never rush to solve your problems for you. He knows best that he does not owe anything to anyone, and that he has the right to be himself in any life situation, like all other people.

The psychologist’s advice will solve my problem in one fell swoop.

It should be remembered that psychologists do not give advice (in contrast, for example, from friends and neighbors who usually start with the phrase “I would be in your place …”. But only keep in mind that this advice can only be carried out by a person who is his gives). What is the best way for you – you know only yourself. The psychologist only tries to help you find this way out, realize it and use it.
