– cart racing, that is, minicar cars without bodywork, differential and elastic suspension of wheels. In fact, the cards consist of a seat, a frame and a motorcycle engine attached to small wheels. Roller-skiing on non-motorized trolleys was extremely popular among US boys in the thirties of last century. In the future this fascination was transformed into two different kinds of sport.
The first is racing on minicars (non-motorized racing cars, English soapbox car, billy kart), rolling from the mountain with a maximum speed of 50 km / h. It was on vehicles of this kind in 1934 by the forces of the municipalities of several cities that Soapbox Derby was organized – a competition on minicars. The initiator of this kind of competition was Myron Scott, photographer of the American newspaper Dayton Daily News. The heyday of the mini-sport took place in the 50-60s of the last century, but since then the popularity of these competitions has been decreasing every year. Nowadays, race on minicars is held in Indonesia, Germany, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia, as well as in other countries, where the features of the relief allow to hold a competition in vehicles without an engine.
The second – carting – was invented by US military pilots during the Second World War. From improvised materials (the chassis, the engine from lawn mowers, canisters for gasoline, pipes, etc.) they built small cars and in their spare time arranged races on the airfield. This kind of hobby, first spread only in very narrow circles, gained worldwide fame thanks to Artu Ingles – a former pilot, a mechanic of one of the firms that was involved in the production of racing cars. It was this man who designed the first maps, which he demonstrated on racing in Pomona (August 1956). The cart was very popular with the public, and a year later Roy Desbrough, Bill Rawls and Duffy Livingston created the world’s first go-kart company, Go-Kart Company, and built the first carte.
The popularity of karting increased every day, and in May 1960 the International Federation of Motorsports officially recognized it as one of the types of motorsport. Two years later, with the FIA, the International Karting Commission was established, and in 1964 in Rome – the first World Championship in this sport was held. However, after a while the popularity of karting began to decline. The reason is simple. The first cards – low-power, simple designs that do not guarantee the safety of the rider, were very cheap, many were affordable. Over time, machines have become more sophisticated, more powerful, but more expensive. In addition, higher speeds require both increased security measures, as well as sharpened driver skills. In the end, only professionals remained in karting.
Fans are not allowed to participate in karting competitions.
In fact, since 2007, amateurs can also participate in competitions if they have the necessary skills and are the owners of a car that meets all the requirements for the means of transportation in this sport.
Maps can not develop a great speed.
Indeed, most maps develop a maximum speed of 150 km / h. However, much depends on the type of engine installed on the machine. After all, it was light cards (weight of a fully equipped sports card – 70-80 kg) that were used to conduct experiments with various types of power plants, which made it possible to demonstrate record speeds. For example, cards with a jet engine mounted on it can reach speeds of up to 407 km / h.
A frame can be made from anything – just to make the material strong and light.
This is not quite true. The base of the card should be made of magnetic material. Pipes made of titanium, duralumin and carbon are prohibited.
Sports cards are no different from the rolling.
In general, yes, but there are some differences in the design. For example, the engine in the sports map is located to the right of the driver (therefore on the sleeve of the overalls there is a special heat-insulating pad), and in the rolling – behind. Carburetor gasoline engine of water or air cooling on sports cards, two-stroke, on rolling – four-stroke. Yes, and the options for transmission on sports and rental maps may be somewhat different.
Karting is just an expensive hobby.
For many professional riders, it was karting that became the first step in entering motor sport. For example, Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso began their career with this sport, and Schumacher, after many years of participation in the competition, “Formula 1” returned to go-karting and won the title of World Champion.
Karting can be practiced in any weather.
Indeed, for many athletes the deteriorated weather is not an obstacle, since there are several types of rubber: slicks, intermediate, rain and winter. In addition, it should be noted that using a special overall the driver has a chance to stay dry in any bad weather.
Children can go karting only from a certain age.
There is a restriction, but not by age, but rather by growth – children are allowed to go karting when they can get a card to the pedals. In addition, on many kartodromy specially for children are offered smaller in size and power machines.
Racing on the cards is not a very interesting sight.
This is not the case – after all, the karting competition is inherent in the dynamics, which is quite comparable with the “Formula-1”, which is achieved due to difficult for the passage of steep turns and short straight sections of the route.
Karting is extremely expensive.
Undoubtedly, if you are a professional sportsman, you should prepare for the fact that you will have to pay a tidy sum. But if you are an amateur, then such large embezzlements do not threaten you. 10-20 minutes on the cardroom (at first you should not go for a long ride) are not so expensive, and the pleasure and benefits of skating you will get much more than from the usual “rest” in the Internet club or in the bar. And if you, in addition, have minimal skills in designing – you can easily collect maps from improvised materials and skate as much as you like.
Karting is an extremely dangerous sport.
Indeed, go-karting is often considered an extreme sport, but the safety of riders on the kartodroma is given a lot of attention. Firstly, a helmet and gloves are mandatory attributes of any person going to drive. Secondly, the cards are extremely stable, and due to the fact that the wheels have a small diameter, it quickly loses speed, even if you for some reason can not use the brakes. Thirdly, the brake rod, duplicated by a cable, is arranged so that the front and rear contours act independently. Even if one of them refuses, the kartingist can brake the second. And, finally, the front and rear bumper and side boxes protect the rider and the mechanisms of the card from external influences, and the chain drive is closed by a casing, preventing the chain from flying off.
It is difficult to master karting.
Absolutely mistaken opinion. Maps are extremely easy to manage – even children at the age of 10 successfully master the skills of driving this small and stable car.
Virtual race – a good help in the real mastery of the art of carting.
Maybe an experienced karting player will help, for example, to familiarize yourself with the trajectory of the route and develop a strategy and tactics for the race. For the amateur, computer games are only fun, which brings a minimum of benefit. Much more effective will be real training on the cardroom.
In order to move faster at the corners of the map, it is necessary to bend inwards to the car, as much as possible unloading the outer wheels.
Actually, on the contrary, it is necessary to deviate in a turn outward, and not inward to maximize the loading of external wheels. As a result, the machine stops sliding (and any slide, no matter how effective it looks from the outside – it always slows the cards), becomes more stable and can develop a greater speed. The trajectory of turning also has a value – it is necessary to choose the shortest. In addition, it should be noted that the cards (especially rolling) do not always differ in the ideal quality of the settings, therefore, if possible, ask the mechanics to check the tire pressure before entering.
It is necessary to brake on corners smoothly.
This is a typical mistake for drivers who are accustomed to driving an ordinary car. The structure and principles of the movement of the map are slightly different from the usual for you automotive, so remember that in karting when cornering is best to keep the gas as long as possible and brake as hard as possible, without, however, wheel until the lock is complete.
The seat of the card should be located as low as possible, and the wheels are adjusted V-shaped.
Indeed, if the races are held in dry weather, it is the aforementioned seating position and wheels that are optimal. If it rains – the seat is best raised slightly, thereby increasing the center of gravity, and the convergence of the wheels will have to change.
The tire pressure of the card must be the same.
The optimal pressure is 0.1 bar in the front wheels, 1.2 bar in the rear wheels. Although professional kartlogists prefer to select the pressure in each tire individually, according to the type of route, the wear pattern on the tire, their own flair and experience.
Karting in the USSR did not like.
This is not true – carting was an extremely popular and massive type of motor sport in the USSR. The first All-Union competitions of kartingists took place in 1962, and already in a year championships of the USSR, republics and cities on the given kind of sports were spent. In international competitions, USSR athletes have participated since 1964.
Races on minicars are out of fashion due to the low speed of the vehicle.
According to experts, the main reason for the decline in interest in this sport was the manufacture of machines by professional designers. The most popular mini-player used in the 30-60’s. the last century, when the boys themselves made vehicles, and the race was not only a way to identify the courage and co-ordination of young drivers, but also a good test of their design skills and technical skills.
