The first is racing on minicars (non-motorized racing cars, English soapbox car, billy kart), rolling from the mountain with a maximum speed of 50 km / h. It was on vehicles of this kind in 1934 by the forces of the municipalities of several cities that Soapbox Derby was organized – a competition on minicars. The initiator of this kind of competition was Myron Scott, photographer of the American newspaper Dayton Daily News. The heyday of the mini-sport took place in the 50-60s of the last century, but since then the popularity of these competitions has been decreasing every year. The second – carting – was invented by US military pilots during the Second World War. From improvised materials (the chassis, the engine from lawn mowers, canisters for gasoline, pipes, etc.) they built small cars and in their spare time arranged races on the airfield. This kind of hobby, first spread only in very narrow circles, gained worldwide fame thanks to Artu Ingles – a former pilot, a mechanic of one of the firms that was involved in the production of racing cars. It was this man who designed the first maps, which he demonstrated on racing in Pomona (August 1956). The cart was very popular with the public, and a year later Roy Desbrough, Bill Rawls and Duffy Livingston created the world’s first go-kart company, Go-Kart Company, and built the first carte.

The popularity of karting increased every day, and in May 1960 the International Federation of Motorsports officially recognized it as one of the types of motorsport. Two years later, with the FIA, the International Karting Commission was established, and in 1964 in Rome – the first World Championship in this sport was held. However, after a while the popularity of karting began to decline. The reason is simple. The first cards – low-power, simple designs that do not guarantee the safety of the rider, were very cheap, many were affordable. Over time, machines have become more sophisticated, more powerful, but more expensive. In addition, higher speeds require both increased security measures, as well as sharpened driver skills. In the end, only professionals remained in karting.


Fans are not allowed to participate in karting competitions.
