The history of the brand begins in 1898, when the confectioner Josef Hipp from the city of Gunzburg had a daughter. Before he had time to recover, as in a year his wife had given birth to twins. That’s only the mother began to have problems with breast milk – she was not able to feed such a horde of children.


By that time the whole world knew about the milk formula from the Swiss Dr. Henry Nestle, the founder of the company of the same name. Just get it was not easy. Then the resourceful Hipp decided to help himself and make something like that. He baked dry biscuits, and then grinded them to a powder. It became part of a mixture based on cow’s milk. Parents’ joy was unlimited, when it turned out that the babies took such food to their liking.

The German was a very practical man and enterprising, he realized that the baby food he created could be a commercial success. A new product Hipp began to sell in its confectionery, which was in the possession of the family for four centuries.

Locals, who heard about the miraculous rescue of babies, immediately began to buy a product with the difficult name Kinderzwiebackmehl Hipp. To meet the growing demand, it was even necessary to create a small factory for the production of ground biscuits. It was they who supplied them to other confectioners Josef.

At the age of 16, son Georg Hipp began to help his father by selling grinded rusks in Munich, distributing the product among housewives. In the 1930s, the business was so developed that it became impossible to work at the level of a conventional confectionery. By that time George Hipp was already engaged in business. As a result, the company Hipp Werk Georg Hipp OHG was founded in Ptaffenhoven. There it is based today. But the production of nutrient mixtures still remained predominantly manual.


The development of the company was interrupted by the policy – the coming to power of the Nazis led to the relocation of Georg to Munich. And one of his brothers even got into a concentration camp for criticizing the new regime. And let the Second World War spared the company, but the post-war time nearly killed it. Especially difficult was the year 1948, when the specter of bankruptcy was already around.

The Germans rescued the invaders – George managed to negotiate with the Americans about a large order for baby food for school canteens. Also, the head of the company was able to provide itself with such a deficit as cocoa. The Americans provided good conditions and the company’s affairs, which had already nurtured three generations of Germans, began to recover.

In 1950, it became clear that the old foundation – grinded biscuits with milk, can no longer form the basis of a growing company. And Georg Hipp is taken for expanding the range. By the beginning of the 1960s his company was offering mashed potatoes, lures and nourishing mixtures. And since 1958 all these products are packed exclusively in glass containers. It was on the one hand more hygienic, and on the other – it allowed to see the contents of the goods better.

Since 1960, all products are beginning to be produced using only the newest biotechnologies. Such an idea came to George in 1956 after acquaintance with Hans Müller, the founder of the bioorganic. This technique involves the cultivation of vegetables and fruits without the use of any chemical fertilizers.

And to grow the necessary ingredients himself, George even bought an abandoned farm near Ptaffenhoven. Since then, the basis of all the company’s products is a bioorganic. Over time, Hipp concluded contracts with other farms that also used the new technology.

In 1967, Georg died, and his son Klaus became the head of the company. He actively continued the family business. Klaus not only significantly increased production capacity, but also expanded the range of products. Then the colorful Hipp logo was born, which we know today. By 1980, HiPP GmbH accounted for 60% of the total baby food market in Germany.


And in 2010 Klaus Hipp said that although the birth rate in the country is falling, the incomes of his company are growing.It turns out that more and more elderly and sick people are choosing products of the brand of baby food. After all, these mixtures are excellent for those who have problems with teeth and digestion. Hipp products are in demand in nursing homes and in people after a stroke. But the company itself is not going to change its priorities and create special products for adults.

Today, Hipp remains one of the most famous brands in the world in the baby food market. Under this brand is produced the widest range of environmentally friendly food for children of different ages. The company is still a family one. She belongs to the same, and several subsidiaries in different countries.
