Gone are the days when users were torn between two browsers – Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. There are many new, stylish and functional competitors. Google created its own browser. This is a free application that uses open source components.
It is believed that Google Chrome – one of the most stable, fast and secure browsers that exist today. It has a simple interface, while all the modern technologies of the web are supported.
Google Chrome includes built-in security methods. You can improve the functionality of the browser with additional extensions. And thanks to the integration with the Google system, the address bar can be used to enter search queries.
Today, almost all the work is done in this browser – they edit documents, listen to music, watch movies. It seems that Google Chrome is beginning to replace itself with an operating system. But there are also secrets in the browser – functions unknown to even sophisticated users. Having learned the secrets of Google Chrome, you can greatly facilitate your work with it.
Search the site through the address bar.
One of the main elements of browser control is the address bar. The creator of the products call it an omnibox. One of its main features is the search on the sites even without their visit. You just need to add a resource to the list of search engines. This is convenient if you want to search for articles on the right site, for example, on Wikipedia, without making intermediate stops. If this function is active, then you just need to start typing the resource name (in our case Wikipedia), then in the right far corner of the omnibox there will be an offer of internal search. There you can type the query you already need. After you enter it, the page for the desired site opens. And this function is not tied to any specific resources. Search with omnibox can be everywhere, you just need to add an address to the engines. All you need to do on the site is to select the search field and click on it with the right mouse button, selecting the menu item “Add as a search engine”. At this stage, the same keyword is set, which will open the resource search window. So, for Wikipedia you can set a simple “wiki”. Such an operation can be done with its most popular services – Twitter, Gmail, Facebook, news resources. And you can search for them directly from the address bar.
Simultaneously move multiple tabs.
Many people know that tabs can be moved, changing places with each other. But the fact that they can be moved to other browser windows is not known to everyone. Moreover, such an operation can be done immediately with several tabs. It is enough to press Shift and click on the necessary elements, collecting them for further movement.
The calculator in the omnibox.
It is known that Google is able to independently perform mathematical operations. But arithmetic can be done right in the browser’s omnibox, without going into the search engine itself. To do this, you need to type a simple expression in the string and then Google will offer to solve this problem, showing the correct answer below. But this will only work if the search engine is Google by default. The same Bing or Yahoo! in solving the problem will not help. This trick will not work in incognito mode.
Conversion of units of measurement.
You can convert units from one to another using the Google Chrome address bar. The correct answer appears in the prompts even before the Enter key is pressed. As long as we just enter a value, the browser already automatically converts it into something that is likely to be searched. So, writing “2 inches”, you can find out how much it will be in centimeters. To convert in the right units, you must put an equal sign. For example, “3 inches = mm”, or “1 inches squared = mm squared”. Again, it is worth remembering the correct search engine and disabling the incognito mode.
Zoom in and out.
You can increase or decrease the page if you hold down the Ctrl key while dragging the mouse wheel forward or backward. You can change the scale if you press Ctrl-Minus or Ctrl-Plus. If the scale is different from 100%, then a magnifying glass will appear in the right edge of the omnibox. Clicking on it will show which current scale is selected, you can immediately reset it to normal. Pressing the combination Ctrl + 0 will also return the page to its normal state.
Many people start cleaning their computer’s disk from time to time. It may turn out that there are scattered images with JPG extension and obscure content. To view them, you usually install a special program, but an open browser is usually helpful. You just need to drag the picture there.
Drag to search.
Selecting text and dragging it to the search box is similar to the copy and paste procedure. So you can not write the text in the omnibox, but directly drag the dedicated there. Another useful option for searching for the selected text is the right click on it. In the context menu, you will be able to search for this fragment.
Drag the address to the bookmarks bar.
You often need to put the desired address in the bookmarks. This is the standard procedure. But you can simply drag the current URL to the bookmarks bar, and then edit this tab.
Navigation on the keyboard.
Pressing “Space” will move the page slightly down. If you press Shift, the page will move up.
Set the start page.
It’s rare when you have to change the starting point of your surfing. Chrome makes this possible. Moreover, you can even do so so that a whole group of sites open at startup. In the settings there is a section “On Startup”. The last point is the ability to set a set of pages that will be launched when opened. You can get to this section by typing the Chrome address in the address bar: // settings / startup. In the proposed fields, you must enter the required addresses or automatically transfer all open pages to the page. And the list can then be edited.
Search results in a separate tab.
The search results are usually opened in the same tab. But sometimes you need to take them out in a separate window without closing the current window. This is easy to do. It is necessary to press Alt together with pressing the Enter key.
Upload files to your desktop.
Where the downloaded files are for many is a mystery. I would like to have easy access to them. Best of all, if they are placed immediately on the Desktop. It is necessary to select the menu item “Advanced settings” in the Settings. And there already in the “Downloads” way to save files. Those who are afraid to clutter up their desktop, you can advise to put a check mark to the browser asked where exactly to save the downloaded file.
Returns a randomly closed tab.
Sometimes it happens that the desired tab is accidentally closed. It’s good that Chrome forgives users. Pressing Ctrl + Shift + T will restore the last closed page.
Sometimes the storage of the history of being on the Internet does not need a person at all. Somewhere in the browser settings the cleaning button hides, but it’s much easier to press Ctrl + Shift + Delete. This immediately causes the browser’s memory deletion menu. It only remains to choose which elements you want to get rid of.
Secrets of the omnibox.
Even in this one element is hidden a lot of interesting. By clicking on the star in the right part of the field, you can add to the bookmark the current page or change the existing one. In the left part, there is an icon in the form of a sheet of paper or a lock (for a secure site). If you click on this item, you will see information about the site. You can also set permissions and rules for the behavior of your browser on this site.
Saving links to the desktop.
There are many options for storing the necessary links, collecting them. However, the easiest option is to save the link to the desktop, simply drag and drop directly from the omnibox. The browser will automatically make the icon active, the user can only organize storage on the desktop.
Own key combinations.
Key combinations are not obvious to everyone, the browser allows you to assign them yourself. To do this, go to the Extensions window by clicking the Chrome: // extensions link and enter the “Quick Keys” menu. But this window will be active if there is at least one active installed extension. And then in a simple dialog, you can select a key combination for one of the running browser extensions. It is only necessary that they perceive such combinations.
Saving pages to PDF.
Pages are best saved in PDF format, so it will be possible to transfer pictures and design in addition to the text. But how can this be done without third-party tools? It turns out that Google Chrome has a built-in virtual printer. It allows you to create PDF pages. It is necessary to press on the page the combination Ctrl + P and select the menu “Print to file”. So you can create a copy of the page in the desired form.
Installing third-party extensions.
In recent versions of the browser, the ability to install third-party extensions that have not been tested in the application store is blocked. But you can bypass this prohibition if you activate the developer mode in the browser menu. It remains only to drag the file with the extension CRX to the browser.
Speed of Chrome.
It happens that after several hours of running Google Chrome starts to slow down. The easiest way is to restart the browser, but sometimes it’s not his fault, but some kind of extension or tab. Help identify the culprit can point “Tools” – “Task Manager”. Sorting the list by field memory will help to identify the task that consumes most of the resources. It remains only to complete this process.
Replacing the current location.
Some sites may request the browser location of the computer. It is possible not only to not provide these data, but also to modify them by providing false ones. In the “Tools” – “Developer Tools” menu, you must press “Esc” and go to the Emulation tab. There you can enter your fake coordinates, latitude and longitude in the “Sensors” menu.
Emulate a mobile device.
In the same emulation tab, you can select Android or iOS in the User Agent field. This step will help to work in conditions of slow connection to the Internet. But the emulation of the screen and the device should not be touched.
Read the passwords.
Google Chrome remembers passwords using the AutoFill feature. However, by default, the secret word is replaced with asterisks. But you can find out what passwords the browser stores. In the “Developer Tools” you need to click on the field with asterisks and change the attribute of the element from Password to Text. Or you can just go to the Chrome tab: // settings / passwords. There will be sites with passwords saved for them. It remains only to select the desired field and click the “Show” button.
Mail in the address bar.
If you enter the command “mailto:” in the address bar and specify the address of the recipient, then Chrome will immediately open the window for creating a new email in the Gmail service. At the same time, the “To” field will already have the address you need.
There are many extensions for Google Chrome that can make a notebook from the browser. But you can do without them, with the help of a little secret. In the address bar, enter the text data: text / html, . The tab will immediately turn into a text editor, it remains to click inside and write notes. The team can be fully booked, then at hand is a “blank sheet” for temporary notes.
Browser as a media player.
It turns out that you can view in the Google Chrome window not only pictures, but also text documents, as well as audio and video materials. Browser is an excellent replacement for a bunch of apps!
You can store many more items in the bookmarks bar if you edit them. And you just have to delete the names of sites or cut them. Ideally, only the icon will remain as a bookmark, it will in itself be a good idea to identify the resource.
Restricting the operation of Flash.
Recently, Adobe Flash technology is giving way to HTML5. In the advanced settings of the browser to the address Chrome: // settings / content. In the configuration of plug-ins it is better to choose “Press for playback” instead of “Play automatically (by default)”. Then the player will remain off until the user himself turns on the desired site. This will allow the pages to load faster and not consume hardware resources.
