As in all Arab countries, family and family values traditionally have priority in Kuwait, as well as respect for the older generation and love for children.
A child in Kuwait from the earliest childhood accustoms to the fact that older people need not only to respect, but also to provide them with all the necessary assistance, at the same time they teach the child and that all members of a large family need to interact peacefully and calmly, conflicts are unacceptable, scandals are impossible.
As a result, the family in Kuwait is a priority, even the degree of success of Kuwait is often determined not so much by its prosperity and career achievements as by the situation in society, influence in the family and clan, that is, the tribal group.
The local notion of reputation is directly related to the level of influence on social and family life, in addition, this concept is associated not only with the success of the personal, but with the success of the whole clan in general.
There is a good tone, and education in Kuwait in the form of hospitality, loyalty to other clans and guests of the country, magnanimity to the less successful fellow tribesmen. All their lives, Kuwait, by and large, spend precisely on the proof and maintenance of their social status inextricably linked with the family.
The concept of the family, as already noted, is connected with community and clanness in a single whole, historically, Islam only strengthened this tradition. Although today the number of Kuwaiti families has somewhat decreased, sociologists associate this with the beginning of oil production, which allowed raising the standard of living of the entire population of the country. Simply now, the family can afford a separate house, whereas earlier in the same house lived representatives of several generations.
However, nevertheless, family ties do not break off, nepotism and clan all are also strong and indestructible in Kuwait. Large families of Kuwaitis in the blood, the number of children from time immemorial was the basis of prestige and social success, especially this concerns natural sons.
Although the attitude towards children and their number has not changed, at the present time there is still a slight decrease in their number in families, more families with only three or four children, according to Kuwaiti concepts, this is not much at all.
Historically, there was a division in Kuwait of a family home into the male and female halves. However, in modern reality, people are increasingly being forced to abandon this tradition, although the man who is responsible for providing his family with everything necessary remains the main earner in the family, and the duty of the wife, respectively, to monitor the household and children. Until recently, marriages in Kuwait were agreed upon and made by elders, no one even thought of disobeying them, but today it has become easier to see a family union between representatives of different clans and clans, with the consent of the parents necessary for the marriage.
Modern Kuwaiti society does not completely restrict women’s rights and freedoms; on the contrary, women themselves impose restrictions of their own free will, some representatives of the weaker sex with great pleasure remain the mistress and mother, and the level of prosperity in the house is shifted to strong men’s shoulders, as well as social and political life.
In Kuwait there is an interesting custom, preserved from Bedouin times, a kind of general meeting “devania”. Earlier it was a meeting of all the men of the tribe in one tent to solve all the vital problems of society, and now it has been transformed into a secular party, being an important ritual of local public life.
The owner of the house in Kuwait, where the men’s meeting is held, is ready to do everything in order to leave the best impression of himself, wives and children, of course, are not allowed to attend the meeting. Men at the meeting not only solve problems and discuss business matters, but also eat light snacks and drink traditionally revered coffee, and the owner of the meeting closely watches that no one is bored and does not need anything.
An invitation to such a meeting is considered the highest degree of respect. Alcohol, by the way is not used, it is generally prohibited by law, although some people violate this prohibition, but only at home, when no one sees, the appearance of a drunk outside the house is not simply unacceptable, but is prosecuted by law.
Wedding customs in Kuwait provide for the payment of kalym for the bride, and, sometimes unreasonably large, but the most important thing is that the bride is considered the property of the bride, she herself disposes of it at her discretion. Communicate and meet Kuwaitis, mostly in their family circle, including all the numerous relatives who are members of the clan, communication with strangers is not welcome.
Respect for the older generation is unshakable and unbreakable, even children can disobey their mother, but not their father, but the grandmother will not disobey under any circumstances, let alone the grandfather. The hospitality of Kuwaiti families also has its own traditional nuances. For example, according to custom, it is necessary to postpone the moment of the meal as long as possible, because the longer the host talks to the guest, the more respects are displayed.
The government and state structures in Kuwait fully support the family nature and priority attitude towards the family, and the financial assistance to the young family is expressed materially. Grooms are given material assistance equal to a good kalym, for the maintenance of a young spouse they are paid a benefit, as well as for every child under eighteen.
A woman is also not forgotten by the state, if she is a wife and mother, she is also paid an allowance, and then an old-age pension. The government takes the housing issue of the new unit of society by providing the house that showed its fortress to a free house, or issues a loan for the construction of its own house.
