Crocodiles

Crocodile

(Crocodylia, or Loricata) refers to aquatic reptiles and is a predatory animal. The word “crocodile” in Greek is translated as “Pebble worm”. This name was given to the animal “thanks” to its bumpy skin. The habitat of crocodiles is tropical and subtropical zones of such countries as: Africa, Australia, Eurasia, America. In the world there are more than twenty species of these animals, which, in turn, are divided into three families: Alligatorclassae, Crocodylclassae, Gavialclassae. The size of a large crocodile can reach 6 meters, a small one – up to 1.5 meters. Animals live mainly in water (both fresh and salty), but sometimes they come out on land. They feed on fish, crustaceans, mollusks, reptiles, birds and other mammals. They reproduce by laying eggs, in which one can lay between 20 and 100 pieces. Life expectancy is 80-100 years, the “adult” age crocodiles reach 8-10 years.

There is no difference between a crocodile and an alligator.

There is a difference. It is in their teeth and face. A crocodile with a closed mouth can be seen protruding a large tooth on the lower jaw. And the alligator has no such tooth, since the upper jaw covers the lower one. In addition, the muzzle of the crocodile has a V-shaped acute shape, the muzzle of the same alligator is blunt, in the form of a U-shaped shape.

Crocodiles are able to run as fast as horses.

This is not a true statement. For crocodiles fast running is simply physically impossible. They have short, squat paws, and the endurance of these animals leaves much to be desired. The maximum speed that they can develop does not exceed 10 km / h (for reference: a person pursued by a crocodile is able to develop a speed of more than 35 km / h).

Female crocodiles are very good mothers.

Absolutely. When the female lays eggs, then it does not depart far from this place. Thus, the risk is reduced that her “children” will not become prey for fans enjoying crocodile eggs (turtles, hyenas, and other animals). When small crocodiles hatch out of eggs, the mother gently drags them closer to the water, for several months helps them with food and all the more vigilantly watches that they are not eaten by other animals.

Crocodiles prefer to eat foul food.

Still, in most cases, these animals prefer fresh meat. But in some cases they will not give up the carrion. By the way, they can use carrion as a bait for crabs and turtles, which at this moment become easy prey for crocodiles. Also, the “croc” is happy to eat fish that are in free swimming, and in fishing nets.

These animals eat people.

Yes, a crocodile can attack a person and eat it. But, as a rule, this happens when a person invades the territory of a crocodile, thereby provoking an animal to attack. However, we can not say that man is the main dish in the menu of crocodiles.

The crocodile is able to eat his brother.

All is true. Among these reptiles there is an unspoken law “the strongest survives”.

When eating a person, the crocodile cries.

“Crocodile tears” – this is the name of this phenomenon. And scientists have proved that these predators really “shed tears”, eating, no, not man, but the meat of any animal. Only now, with pity for his victim, this has nothing to do with it. The reason for the “crocodile tears” is that the eyes of the crocodile have special glands designed to release the animal’s body from excess salt. When there is a “search” with salt, the glands begin to work and from here appear transparent drops, which are called “crocodile” tears.

Crocodile can be tamed and kept at home as a pet.

Of course, you can keep it, only very carefully.First, the “tame” crocodile will never become, no matter how long it has not lived in a society of people. Secondly, this animal is a source of increased danger, and therefore can attack completely unexpectedly and suddenly. Well, in the third, for such an exotic animal it is necessary to create all conditions that are as close as possible to natural ones (a spacious terrarium, appropriate food, etc.).

The skin color of a crocodile can vary.

It’s true. For example, when crawling in the morning to bask in the sun, the crocodile has a dark gray or brown (sometimes, black) skin color. After a while, warmed, the crocodile’s skin acquires a dirty green color. And when the animal becomes a light sand color, it means that it is hot.

Crocodiles can not be trained.

Ironically, crocodiles can be found in almost any circus, and in Thailand, for example, there is a special show center where these animals show their skills. The main thing in the work of the trainer is that the crocodile is full and satisfied, then you can teach it to anything.
