Brain brain myths

The brain is the central part of the nervous system of animals and humans that provides the most perfect forms of regulation of all body functions, its interaction with the environment, higher nervous activity, and in man and higher mental functions. The brain consists of nervous tissue: a gray matter (a cluster of mostly nerve cells) and a white matter (a cluster of mostly nerve fibers).

To solve the same problems, representatives of different cultures activate the same parts of the brain.

This is not quite true. Psychologists have long pointed out differences in the perception of the world and the peculiarities of remembering information from representatives of, for example, American and East Asian cultures. While the former show the features of some isolation and independence, the latter can be traced to a collectivist approach to solving problems. The results of experiments, during which Asians and Americans answered the same simple questions, allow us to conclude: representatives of the two groups use different parts of the brain to search for answers.

You can grow wiser with a certain diet.

Indeed, some foods (chicken eggs, fish oil, beets, etc.) increase cognitive abilities, since they contain substances that positively influence the work of the brain. But it should be noted that experiments with a “diet for improving the mind” were conducted only in laboratory conditions on experimental animals. Food products that are capable of granting mental abilities to a person deprived of them have not yet been found.

You can tickle yourself.

You can tickle, but it will not be ticklish. Since the human brain is tuned to the perception of external stimuli, the signals caused by the actions of the person himself, he perceives less actively.

It is more difficult to play chess than, for example, to look at photos.

In fact, it is much more difficult for a person to identify visual objects (especially if there is insufficient clarity caused, for example, by poor lighting or a poor-quality picture). In such cases, the brain “dorisovyvaet” non-existent details of objects seen in passing (for example, the figure of a person seen by you in the twilight on the roadside, with closer examination may be a road sign, etc.).

A person uses 10% of his brain.

Studies have shown that even for a simple task almost all parts of the brain are activated, and during the day a person uses almost all the available potential of this body.

Yawning arises only from boredom, from the desire to sleep or from lack of sleep.

This is not quite true. It is yawning that helps a person to wake up. After all, in the process of yawning, the respiratory throat expands, hence the lungs receive more oxygen, which, moving into the blood, invigorates us in the morning.

The hearing of blind and poorly seeing people is extremely sharp.

Not necessary. It turns out that the weak sounds are heard by the blind as well as the sighted. But people deprived of vision have a much better auditory memory, which allows them to easily navigate in space. Blinds better determine the source of sound and more easily capture the meaning of the sentence in a foreign language.

Computer games depress brain activity, they just dull.

If you spend 10-12 hours on a computer at a time, then you can actually achieve the effect mentioned (it does not matter if you are playing or are busy with work). It should be noted that computer games (not only developing, but also shooters), modeling certain situations, help to learn to perform several tasks at the same time and quickly respond to changes in the situation.

It’s very difficult to forget the stupid song.

This is indeed so. The brain remembers the daily routine of a person, from making coffee and ending with the road on which he must go to get to the house. The ability to recall this sequence makes everyday human life possible.Often the brain automatically turns on the melody heard in this algorithm and periodically reminds it to the person.

The bigger the brain, the more intelligent the person.

Intellectual abilities depend not on brain size, but on the number of synapses (contacts between neurons).

Physical exercises do not affect the level of intelligence, rather the reverse.

This is not true. After all, regular exercise helps increase the number of capillaries in the brain. As a result, the blood supply of this organ improves, the brain receives more oxygen, glucose and other nutrients. It should also be mentioned that former athletes are less susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease than people who have never been addicted to sports. But to achieve the above effect, sports should last at least 30 minutes and at least three to four times a week.

Children (especially nursing infants) who listen to Mozart’s music, get smart.

Of course, the positive impact of classical music on a person is a proven fact. But does this music really help to increase the intellect? To be more precise: scientists at the moment do not have convincing evidence of this fact. The myth that Mozart helps make children smarter appeared in the nineties of the last century, after the publication of data from studies conducted among college students. Students who listened to Mozart’s works within 10 minutes, coped better with the tasks of the test work. About the children (and, especially, infants) there was no question.

Creating artificial intelligence is not far off.

This is fiction. After all, the brain is a morphogenetically active system, which means that the connections between neurons throughout life change all the time. In the human brain, 150 billion, therefore, to simulate a similar system will have to use at least 150 billion processors, between which the connections are constantly re-bonded (according to certain regularities that have nothing to do with conventional mathematical algorithms). Agree – the task is rather complex and at this stage is almost irresolvable.

Nicotine destroys the brain.

To be more precise: nicotine has a harmful effect on the body, but the brain activates this substance, according to scientists, activates. According to experts, it is on the basis of nicotine will be created a drug that saves from senile dementia. Currently, drugs are being developed that mimic the effects of tobacco active ingredients (stimulating brain activity), but do not cause addiction and do not provoke cardiovascular diseases, strokes, cancer, etc.
