Bananas are an exotic fruit. Today, these fruits are available in any vegetable store, and in fact in Soviet times it was an expensive and rare curiosity. But a banana is an ancient cultivated person.
They came from the Malay Archipelago to India. Mention of this useful plant occurs another 3,700 years ago. And in the second half of the XIX century a whole industry of bananas appeared – they began to be transported to countries with a temperate climate.
Gradually bananas spread all over the world, which we observe today. Today, around 100,000 tons of such fruits are produced in the world. In many countries, bananas are one of the main food products.
Not only is this a nutritious fruit, but it also has many useful properties. But do not praise bananas, because much of what we know about them – myths. They should be considered.
All bananas are the same.
It turns out that the world cultivates more than half a thousand varieties of bananas, but not all of them are suitable for food. In the municipality of La Lima in Honduras there is even the world’s largest collection of bananas. It has more than 470 varieties. Historically, they are all derived from three types: banana Maclay, banana pointed and Banana Balbis. Bananas differ not only in size and in the way they grow, but even in color. For example, a green banana is generally inedible in raw form, it is made from chips and cooked. There are red bananas. And those bananas, which we usually see on the shelves, belong to the robusta maurice variety.
Today, all bananas are genetically modified.
People have become so afraid of GMO products that even bananas are even considered “artificial”. In fact, people really learned how to grow genetically modified bananas. The first crop was harvested in 2010, but it happened in Australia. The main supplier (about 90%) of bananas to the Russian market is Ecuador. Yes, and the cyclone in February 2011 in Australia destroyed about 90% of the harvest of such bananas. So what about us took care of either nature, or even higher forces. The use of new technologies in the cultivation of bananas was aimed at increasing the number of minerals and vitamins, for further implementation in African countries. The first results were amazing. At least one group of genes worked, which led to an increase in vitamin A in bananas.
Overeating bananas leads to increased blood sugar levels.
Like other fruits, bananas have pectins and natural sugars. However, their share is not so great, as, for example, melons and strawberries with their indicators of 13% and 15% respectively. A banana can increase the blood sugar level by no more than 0.5-1.2%. So a couple of bananas a day will not give the body so much sugar to aggravate the condition of the pancreas.
Overeating bananas can lead to an overdose of potassium.
Bananas are really champions of potassium content. Each ripe fruit contains about 1100 mg of this element. However, in such a natural form, he does not cause harm to health. Moreover, an adult can only absorb 60-65% of the potassium that is a part of bananas.
Bananas do not allow to lose weight.
There is an opinion that those who are dieting should abandon bananas. The reason for the appearance of such myths is the sweetness of fruit. Because of this, it seems that bananas help to gain weight. In fact, the average banana contains only 95 calories. In this fruit, there are polysaccharide ballast substances. They are not digested and not absorbed by our body, but give a sense of satiety.
Bananas do not cause allergies.
But this statement is true. Bananas are useful because there are no allergens in them. That’s why this fruit can be included in the diet for the youngest children. In comparison with the same strawberry, the risk of allergic reaction is reduced to zero.
Bananas are aphrodisiacs.
A banana is the same aphrodisiac, as well as from other fruits – pears, cherries. Among other dishes of a romantic dinner, a banana looks natural, but here the fetus plays a more important role, rather than its internal composition. To produce sex hormones, the banana does not have much influence. But it has a lot of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), which stimulates the brain and increases the ability of the mind to withstand different stresses. That’s why it is recommended to eat a banana before the beginning of a hard labor period.
Bananas are an excellent remedy against a hangover.
This statement is true only half. Bananas can only briefly push back the inevitable symptoms of a hangover, so it is not worth taking them as a miraculous saving panacea. Due to fructose, fusel oils are bound, but to fix the effect, vitamin C is also required. Only now the banana is not at all sour, so that with time the headache and nausea will return.
Light bananas are an excellent cosmetic.
And this statement is true. Unripe bananas have glycosides and linoleic acid, which can be used in masks and scrubs. These substances give an emollient and tonic effect. Kashitsa and unripe bananas are perfect not only for oily skin, but also help with dermatitis.
Bananas are completely harmless.
As you would not want to see a perfect fruit in a banana, it is not. And although the list of its useful properties is really impressive, there are still some unpleasant consequences of using bananas. The main one is bloating. But this can be avoided if there are bananas only an hour after eating and also not washed down with water. It is better to limit the consumption of bananas to those who are not very mobile. The problem is that the bananas are slowly digested, which can lead to weight gain. Another feature of bananas is the ability to increase the viscosity of blood. So it is better to give up such food to those who are recovering from a stroke or heart attack.
Bananas grow on palm trees.
There are no such palm trees on which bananas would grow, and there are no other trees. The whole point is that bananas, as, by the way, and pineapples are the fruits of grass. It can reach 9 meters in height, which was the reason for the error. We, in fact, are dealing with berries. Wild bananas, which are still found in Southeast Asia, have large and hard seeds and little flesh. A man cultivated a variety and began to plant those bananas that do not have seeds, but much more fleshy.
Bananas are grown in southern countries.
Few people know that the largest in Europe, the producer of bananas are not southern Italy and Spain, and northern Iceland. Here these fruits are grown in huge greenhouses, which are heated by geothermal sources. But only two degrees from here passes the polar circle!
There are no special requirements for storing bananas.
It is important to remember that storing bananas at room temperature will lead to premature skinning of the peel. It would be better to put it in the refrigerator. There, the fruit will mature much more slowly and deteriorate later.
To increase the shelf life of bananas, in supermarkets they are treated with special gas.
Today, almost all suppliers of exotic fruits use some chemical means for long-term storage of such products. Bananas are processed with a special powder that does not allow them to ripen. Those bananas that are exported are generally ripped off by green ones. While such fruits will reach the destination country, while they lie on the shelves of shops, they will just have time to ripen. Some suppliers also sprinkle bananas in formalin containers, which interfere with the decomposition of tissues. And then the products are also wrapped in a dense layer of fabric. When the bananas are delivered to the supermarket, the formalin is washed off. That’s why you should beware of wet bananas. After all, their use can be simply unsafe.
