The method of investigation using ultrasound is based on a banal echo. Different fabrics differently reflect the sound vibrations of high frequency, above 20 kHz. With the help of the sensor, the computer removes reflections and a picture appears on the screen, which the specialist can understand.

Among the many methods of examination, ultrasound remains the most popular and fashionable. Thanks to this harmless method, you can immediately know the results without waiting for the laboratory data.

But such simplicity and availability of ultrasound immediately led to the fact that there were some exaggerations. The problem is that many patients believe in the omnipotence of such a survey and even accuse the doctors of the fact that their expectations have not been confirmed. That is why we should consider the most popular myths about ultrasound.

Ultrasound can be used to examine all organs in general.

Ultrasound can recognize only fluid-filled or sufficiently dense bodies. The air for such waves becomes an insuperable barrier. That is why, so that such a medium does not interfere, and apply a special ultrasonic gel outside. For the same internal organs that are filled with air, ultrasound in principle is impossible.

With the help of ultrasound, you can determine any pathology.

Ultrasound can only see anatomical changes and only in certain tissues, as already mentioned. Functional disorders, however, can not be detected. And the phrase that “ultrasound pathology is not found” does not at all guarantee that everything is in good health.

Ultrasound can be done before a doctor’s examination or even refuse the latter.

It is understood that ultrasound is only an additional survey. Go there, having in hand a presumptive diagnosis. But it can be placed only after examination of the patient by a doctor and questioning. Doing an ultrasound just like that, for the sake of interest and not knowing what exactly to look for, there is no sense. The examining specialist will not know what to look for. And before the examination of the doctor can do only “ultrasound in the dynamics.” It implies already known diagnosis, when it is necessary to reveal the changes that have occurred.

You can see the pregnancy on the first day of the delay, or even the day before the expected menstruation.

Clearly see on ultrasound can be a uterine pregnancy, starting from 7-10 days of delay. And there are several reasons. First of all, the fetal egg is too small, the device has a limited resolution, it is worth noting that the female body is experiencing natural functional changes. At such a short time, it is easy to confuse the pregnancy with the onset of menstruation. The uterus can accumulate blood until external bleeding has begun. That is why in such cases, for accuracy, it is recommended to repeat ultrasound in another week.

For an ultrasound, the body does not need to be specially cooked.

This is true if it is a question of preparing for examination of the mammary glands, vagina, small pelvis, kidneys or thyroid gland. But a more detailed examination of the same kidneys, as well as the bladder and the outer pelvis requires a filled bladder. Before carrying out ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, one must observe a gas-free diet for three days, which includes, among other things, the rejection of such products as whole milk, grape juice, black bread, legumes and fresh vegetables. It is also necessary to take activated charcoal or another similar absorbent. If you do not follow such recommendations, then the intestines will fill with gases and block the abdominal cavity.

If there are changes in the body, ultrasound will show them.

In the body there may be kidney stones that will not give the echo necessary for detection. Invisible ultrasound changes can exist in the abdominal cavity and small pelvis (adhesions, for example). The accuracy of the method is on the average 70% and varies depending on the diseases. So, for breast diseases, the accuracy of ultrasound is only 60-65%, whereas in X-rays it is 80-85%.

Ultrasound is an objective and accurate method.

This study is initially subjective. Its accuracy directly depends both on the qualification of a specialist and on the class of equipment. So it turns out that in one day it can be examined in different places and get different results. Therefore, we need a doctor to evaluate ultrasound.

ultrasound is harmful to do during pregnancy.

You should understand what ultrasound is – it’s an inaudible squeak of high frequency. Teratogenic effect, he is deprived, that is, the fetus has no effect. Prolonged ultrasound may, on the contrary, strengthen the tone of the uterus. But after the end of the procedure, this effect will go down to “no.” So there are no contraindications to the conduct of ultrasound as often as doctors require. Only here it is not deliberately to be fragmented, it will not provide additional useful information. It is optimal to conduct such a survey every 30-45 days.

US can not be done in the early stages of pregnancy.

This myth continues the previous one. And the blame for all – the lack of people’s deep knowledge of technology. In the early stages of pregnancy, ultrasound is necessary, if the gynecologist has questions about the development of the fetus, you need to make sure that the pregnancy is not an ectopic. Thus, with the help of ultrasound it becomes possible to confirm some assumptions of the doctor. The result depends on the experience of specialists who will be able to consider pathology. And this procedure, again, is safe even in the early stages of pregnancy. The only thing, we must remember that ultrasound should be done solely to confirm the diagnosis or the normal course of pregnancy. To conduct such a survey is simply for the sake of curiosity, certainly not worth it.

Ultrasound should be done no more than three times in the entire pregnancy.

This myth appeared because people do not understand where the restriction of three ultrasound appeared at all. In fact, this is not a rigid rule, but simply the minimum number of examinations that are required to fully monitor the course of pregnancy. Scientists have identified the terms on which it is possible to identify potential problems with the fetus. It is believed that the first ultrasound should be performed at 10-12 weeks, the second – at 20-24 weeks, and the third – from 32 to 36 weeks. But in agreement with the doctor may need additional tests, there is nothing wrong.

It is better to do three-dimensional ultrasound.

It seems to us that any new technology is preferable and more accurate than the old one. But each uzist, considering the apparatus from the point of view of obtaining the result, always for some reason leans toward a traditional, two-dimensional ultrasound, with a black and white picture. This technology perfectly copes with the task, in the case of pregnancy, showing all the important parameters of embryo development and identifying possible violations. The three-dimensional ultrasound allows you to examine in detail all the parts of the body of the future little man, which makes the definition of sex unambiguous. Three-dimensional ultrasound allows parents to see how the baby stretches, yawns and sucks his fingers. Who will refuse such an opportunity, let for this and have to pay? But from the point of view of medicine of practical advantage, three-dimensional ultrasound, compared with the two-dimensional one, does not bring.

Three-dimensional ultrasound should be done for all future parents.

In our time, far from all medical institutions have equipment necessary for such a procedure, especially for state clinics. Even in private institutions that specialize in gynecology and obstetrics, an ultrasound scanner with powerful computer equipment is not always present. The same centers that offer the service of a three-dimensional ultrasound take an extra charge for this. I must say, this service is quite in demand, because in its process it is proposed to record video on disk, then to show the grown up child. Whether it is necessary is a personal choice of parents, there is no medical indication for carrying out exactly such an ultrasound.

Three-dimensional ultrasound is done in the same way as a two-dimensional one.

Actually, there are some differences. The main thing – the quality of the image, as already reported above. And the time required for the examination is slightly larger. If in the traditional case it takes about 15 minutes, then a three-dimensional ultrasound will take from half an hour to 50 minutes.
