(medical name candidiasis) – one of the varieties of fungal infection, is caused by microscopic yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida. The fungus settles on the skin and mucous membranes of all organs that have them: in the oral cavity, in the intestines, in the vagina, in the urinary tract. Candidiasis can affect the internal organs (visceral, or deep candidiasis). Symptoms of candidiasis are: burning and itching in the area of the affected organs, white discharge, pain during sexual intercourse (with genital localization of the process).
Thrush is a fairly common disease. According to statistics, 75% of women on the planet at least once in their lives suffered from thrush. In a medical environment, candidiasis is easily diagnosed and easily cured. But people with non-medical education have a lot of misconceptions about thrush.
Thrush is a woman’s disease.
Actually, both women and men are infected with thrush. In women, thrush is usually localized in the vagina and external genitalia, and in men it affects the glans penis and foreskin. Both in men and women, thrush is accompanied by itching and burning. Women – in the field of external genitalia. In men – in the region of the glans penis and foreskin. In both sexes thrush is characterized by pain during sexual intercourse and urination. The only difference is that in women with thrush there are white curdled vaginal discharge (hence the name of the disease), and in men – a white coating on the head of the penis and a white discharge, similar to sperm, with urination. Moreover, thrush happens even in newborns. With this form of candidiasis, the cheeks and tongue of the child are covered with whitish coating reminiscent of cottage cheese. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, this disease is not harmful to the baby.
Thrush is a venereal disease.
Candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted disease. He only has a similar clinical picture.
Thrush is transmitted sexually.
Partly true. Although thrush can be transmitted sexually, most often this disease is not transmitted sexually. Nevertheless, when thrush occurs, doctors recommend refraining from sexual intercourse until complete recovery – in order to exclude the possibility of infection of the sexual partner.
The presence of this fungus in the body means that you have thrush.
Wrong. The fact is that yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida are present in all healthy people. Moreover, a person “becomes infected” with these fungi in the first year of life (!). Their presence in the microflora of the vagina, colon and mouth is considered the norm. The thrush only develops when the number of these microorganisms exceeds the permissible norm.
The cause of thrush is weakened immunity.
Not only that. One of the reasons for the reproduction of fungi of the genus Candida is above the norm, indeed, diseases that cause immunodeficiency are considered. For example, such as diabetes mellitus. In addition, thrush can provoke conditions accompanied by a weakening of immunity: pregnancy, lactation, taking antibiotics and contraceptives. The weakened organism can not stop the reproduction of the fungus. But not only weakened immunity is the cause of thrush. The second reason is called changes in the microflora of the mucous membranes (mouth, vagina or intestine). The balance of the microflora of the mucous membranes can be disturbed due to improper nutrition, antibiotic intake and weakening of immunity. Thus, it turns out that the thrush provoked all the same reasons that were listed and higher.
During pregnancy, treat thrush – you can not.
This is a common mistake for expectant mothers. Noticing the symptoms of thrush, they do not rush to take medicine for fear of harming the baby’s health. But thrush during pregnancy is a very common phenomenon. There are two reasons for this: first, pregnancy weakens the immunity of the future mother, and secondly, during pregnancy hormonal changes change the microflora of the woman’s vagina. A violation of the balance of microflora, as already mentioned above – provokes thrush. In fact, to treat thrush during pregnancy is not only possible, but also necessary. Not only to get rid of her unpleasant symptoms, but also to protect the baby from infection with candida fungi during passage through the birth canal. Treatment of thrush in pregnant women does a minimum harm to the future child, since for pregnant women choose drugs with low toxicity. And they do not use it orally, but intravaginally.
Sweet lovers have a better chance of getting thrush.
The level of sugar in the blood of a person is constant and does not depend on the amount of sweets eaten. But in people with diabetes, the risk of getting the milkwoman is indeed higher than that of healthy people. But it is explained by weakened immunity.
There is a special diet for the prevention of thrush.
Some believe that if you eat yeast foods (buns) and molds with mold, it increases the reproduction of the fungus. And the use of sour-milk products, preferably with bifidobacteria, slows down the growth of these microorganisms. In addition, it is recommended to eat foods with antimicrobial properties: garlic, red pepper, grapefruit, tea tree oil. In fact, there is still no scientifically sound research supporting this theory.
Milk can cure caramel.
Part of the truth. Indeed, for the treatment of thrush sometimes advised to use caramel containing lactulose. But the effectiveness of this method of treatment is still questioned by many doctors.
Thrush can be cured by increasing immunity.
Wrong. If the number of fungi of the genus Candida has already exceeded the permissible norm on the mucous membrane, the disease can be cured only with special preparations. Immunomodulating drugs can only serve as a supplement to the main treatment. That is, first you need to cure thrush, and only then to eliminate the factors that provoked its development.
Thrush can be cured without a visit to the doctor.
This is a myth. For example, many ladies are trying to cure a yeast infection with vaginal pills and a wide spectrum of suppositories. But such treatment will not have a result, and most likely, will aggravate the disease, tk. these drugs suppress the normal microflora of the mucosa. Only a doctor can correctly diagnose the disease and prescribe treatment. In addition, it is unlikely that you will receive the necessary medicines in the pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription. So when symptoms of thrush manifestation the most correct decision will be a visit to the doctor.
