The oldest countries

Today there are more than 250 countries in the world. But the UN is composed only of 193, the rest have an unclear status. Many states have gained independence recently, while others are only on the path to obtaining sovereignty. At the same time, historians clearly know the dates of the emergence of the youngest countries, and when the ancient and the first such formations arose, a thick layer of millennial dust hides. Even the methodology of the birth of countries is difficult to determine. After all, each nation has its own myths and legends about the timing of the emergence of the state.

For example, the legends of San Marino say that in 301 a member of one of the first Christian communities created a refuge on the top of Monte Titano. From this time on, the county of the statehood of a small country is being counted. However, the independence of this settlement can only be addressed from the VI century, when Italy split into many independent states.

Japanese legends say that the country was founded in 660 BC, but history knows about the first state on the island – Yamato. It appeared in 250-538 years. Ancient Greece was one of the first civilizations, it became a cradle for modern culture, science and philosophy. However, the country’s half-independence in its present form was received only in 1821, leaving the Ottoman Empire.

That is why to formulate such a rating, those forms of organization of society that correspond to the modern features of the state were taken into consideration. It must be truly independent, have its own territory, language and state symbols. In our list there are those states that exist on the modern world map.
