Life on our planet exists due to the fact that organisms and creatures constantly multiply and leave after themselves the offspring. Only this way it is possible to avoid extinction.
There are a lot of interesting ways of reproduction, but most often there is a mating. Creatures of different sexes carry out a kind of substance exchange, which allows the offspring to appear with the signs of their parents.
But the more a person learns about the animal world, the more unusual, strange, and often incomprehensible it is. Sexual acts of animals are usually devoid of the romance that is inherent in man. Mating in nature sometimes looks very unusual.
Some beings like to dance before the act of sex. Among them are flamingos and scorpions. Sometimes this ritual is not necessary to attract attention to yourself from the opposite sex and is alone. In scorpion, mating is part of a walk for two. Usually this happens on a moonless night, after the male surrounds the female before the beginning of the ritual. At the right moment, the scorpion takes the ladies’ claws into their own, and this couple begins to perform something like tango. Such a dance can last a whole day. During such movements the male puts a capsule with his spermatozoa on the ground and gently brings the partner to this place. He wants the female to be right above the capsule, and draws her into her body. And although the dance itself may seem romantic, its male claw holds claws not for beauty – such loving embraces are meant for the female cannibal not to tear off her friend’s head.
Birds are hikers.
In order for male hikers to continue their family, they need to maximally equip their bachelor dwelling – hut. That’s why the man’s house is devoid of disorder and chaos, which usually appears without a woman’s participation. The huts are systematically building a beautiful dwelling. Only if the female approves its future nest, it will enable the architect to mate with himself. Shalashniks live in Australia and build their nests on the ground with the help of twigs, leaves, bones, stones, bright decorations from flowers and even insects. In short, everything that suits the builder’s arm is suitable. And the main part of the nest is built in the form of a tunnel or an arch, in which a path from small objects is laid. On it, the inhabitants go back and forth. It is believed that uniformity and uniformity are very important for female huts. Considering such requirements to the dwelling on the part of females, the males leave little things on the path specially on the path. And the big parts are located far away from the path. As a result, for the bird located between them, everything will seem the same size. Such an optical illusion is called a changed perspective. It is likely that it was the birds who deserved the right to be considered the first artists, having learned to create such works of art long before people. That forced males to hunt for most of their time for improving the hut. As a result, it takes a very long time to bring the love nest to the mind. Only here many houses and remain without attention of females. Success accompanies older and more experienced males who are more likely to mate. Such hikers have no problems with the attention of females and can mate several times in one season.
The mating processes of many living beings are very colorful, these are real rituals. But the champions in this case are flamingos. Their shows can even compete with those created by carefully rehearsing a person. Before starting to mate, the whole colony of birds gathers in one place and starts moving synchronously, as if under the command of an experienced choreographer. Flamingos stretch their long necks, begin to march, move their heads from side to side and fluff their feathers. For an outsider, this sight looks very beautiful. And the flamingos themselves receive during this show the opportunity to better consider each other. Scientists believe that while the female chooses a partner who is the best of all the rest of her intricate movements. And what kind of show without makeup? Flamingos also know this. During the breeding season, these birds spread butter all over their bodies, which allows them to be even rosier, and, therefore, more attractive to their partners. This oil emits a special gland located near the tail of the bird. The fluid is needed in order to make the feathers waterproof. But in the breeding season the organism understands a special need and produces oil much more actively. And the pink color of flamingos is also supported by the consumption of crustaceans by the bird. But the oil contains carotenoid, which makes the color even more vivid.
Spotted marsupial martens.
In Australia. Tasmania and New Guinea live small rodents, which are called marsupial cats, then spotty marsupial martens, which is correct. Although outwardly these mammals look innocent, during mating they become extremely evil and fret aggressive. The beginning of the ritual is quite traditional for the wild nature. The female leaves behind a beckoning trace from urine, which is attacked by a male. He begins to pursue a friend, until she does not understand his intentions. At this moment, she lifts her paw and allows the male to sniff it thoroughly, giving a signal that it is ready to mate. And at that moment, cruelty begins. During mating, the male literally jumps on the back of his female, clinging to her neck. He does it so much that the female’s neck swells and the entire back is covered with cuts. And the whole sexual intercourse lasts till 24 hours. All this time the poor female has to sit without movement, she lowers her head and covers her eyes, as if she wants to abstract from the violence that is taking place with her. But it happens that males are so aggressive in mating that they even kill their partner. It should also take into account the fact that if the female does not immediately agree to copulate, then the male kills it almost immediately. But “the last laugh” is still females. Males are literally exhausted to death by trying to make as many pairings as possible. During the whole breeding season aggressive animals fight with competitors, eat little and almost do not sleep. As a result, by the end of the year the population of spotted marsupial martens can generally consist of only females and their young.
Not all beings achieve the position of females by force. Males of puffers know a special sense in courtship. These fish show a lot of imagination to attract a female. For this, puffers on the ocean floor create round and detailed shapes, right on the sand. Fish themselves have up to 12 centimeters in length, and their patterns reach a width of two meters. In this case, the masters adorn their creations with pieces of coral. To create such a bizarre nest, the male spends up to 10 days. Only if the female appreciates the beauty of the creation, she will lay her eggs on a smooth central circle. Scientists are still at a loss to say on what criteria the females choose the nest they need. Obviously, large and best decorated with its forms, speak of the strength and health of the male, which attracts the female. Interestingly, people for several decades knew about the existence of such figures on the sand, but could not understand what kind of force or creatures they create. And only in 2012 the Japanese underwater photographer managed to remove the moment of creativity.
Everyone knows that most of the rodents are real giants of sex. Against this background, the unusual habit of a pre-vole voles looks like a monogamous whole life, keeping fidelity to one partner. Nevertheless, reproduction occurs quite often, females generally bring from two to four litters annually. But females do this mostly with one partner, and the relationship between the female and the males persists throughout their life. But it happens that the voles under the influence of either hormones, or other temptations, mate with other partners. Nevertheless, infrequent treason does not destroy couples, mice still divide their nest and raise their offspring. And the creation of such long relations between pre-voles is not due to their high moral principles, but to neurochemistry. It turns out that representatives of this family differ from other voles by a large number of receptors for hormones oxytocin and vasopression. They just strengthen the feeling of affection. As a result, mice experience a real buzz from a constant partner. Scientists continue to study the prairie voles and their hormonal background in order to understand the cause of the formation of couples already in humans. If one understands why even in such a background some voles tend to change, it will be possible to explain similar behavior of a person.
Like a person, seahorses take care of the females for a long time. Before the actual act of sexual intercourse itself, many visits will take place. Attracted skates meet each morning and perform a kind of intimate dance. Creatures swim side by side, twist their tails and move in unison to each other. The difference from scorpions is that such a dance is really romantic, not a precautionary measure. The observation of skates in the process of courtship really looks touching. Gradually, skates translate the relationship to a new level. The female begins to lay her eggs in the pocket of the male, making him pregnant. And after he gives birth and the offspring will be born, the happy father throws the young ones to chance. The male himself is preparing to find a new love in the next breeding season.
These birds have a unique sexual life for many reasons. First of all, they are monogamous. Both the male and the female care for the chicks, which is quite rare for the animal world. And their mating ritual really looks ridiculous. Biologists call this dance, but from the side it seems that birds are trying to fence their huge beaks. Albatross live for a long time – up to half a century. Every year after reaching the age of majority, birds gather on land, where they meet with selected partners and start breeding. When a pair of albatrosses meet, they begin to grab each other by the beak, as if fencing, making a variety of crackling sounds and pacing from side to side. Such a ritual does not look particularly passionate, but the birds themselves like it. Soon, the couple sharpens their dance and finds a literally common language, creating their own special dialect, inherent only to them. But the mating ritual becomes less necessary with time or even disappears from the life of the couple. This effect is also well known to people who have been with each other for a long time.
These insects have an amazing talent – they can walk on water. In males, courtship is not particularly sophisticated – they just jump on a female, who either agrees to mating, or pays for a refusal. In case the lady is indifferent to such assertive courtship, the male launches small waves on the water, thereby attracting predators. And in case of agreement the water meter stops rippling, proceeding to reproduction. That’s just how safe it is to do on the surface of the water, given that there are a lot of hungry fish in the pond. But the very process of reproduction leaves the females indifferent, because for one mating they can impregnate as many eggs as they can for the rest of their lives. Nevertheless, poor insects prefer not to conflict with a male blackmailer and not complicate an already dangerous situation, but simply to surrender to him.
Everybody knows the ability of these cephalopods to merge with the terrain, demonstrating their camouflage skills. But the ability to instantly change your color literally in a split second is useful not only to hide. It turns out that the cuttlefish males use their disguise in order to win the attention of the female. In most populations of these mollusks, she falls at times even to ten cavaliers. That’s why the males have to demonstrate their talents in every way possible in order to get a chance to mate and multiply. At such competitions small and weak cuttlefish do not have any chances at all. But in such a battle, the mind sometimes wins brute physical force. Nature has allowed the most cunning male cuttlefish to masquerade as females, changing their coloring, and also hiding their extra limbs. It is present in males for sperm transfer. So cunning people pretend to be creatures of the opposite sex. While other males are fighting each other for the right of access to the body, the most savvy are quietly getting to the coveted goal. Sometimes cunning people masquerade only half. That part of their body that is visible to the female looks as usual. And the other half represents cuttlefish of the opposite sex. Thus, the rivals are deceived, and the female sees the true face of the gentleman.
