The church is the place where a person can pray to God. Depending on religion, this place itself has certain architectural features. Today in the world of culture mixed, resulting in the light there are quite unusual church buildings. As a result, they attract people to their external forms, which is only to the benefit of ministers who have received new listeners. Let’s talk about the most unusual churches in the world.
Church of Lego, Holland.
Fans of modular buildings simply need to visit this temporary structure from the Netherlands. It is known that their cubes of Lego can be built anything. In this case, witty Dutchmen managed to build even a church from toy colored blocks. In fact, compound bricks are not at all toy and plastic from the usual set of Lego. These blocks are made of concrete in such a way as to remind of the famous designer. Even the roof itself resembles the classic Lego plates. And this church was built by Michel de Wit and Philip Jonker at the festival “Grenswerk” in Enschede.
Organic church, Italy.
This amazing building is located on the outskirts of the city of Bergamo, at the foot of the Monte Arena. The cathedral is organic, as it is created, in fact, from trees. And invented such a sample of architecture Italian artist Giuliano Mauri. In 2001, a passion for nature inspired him to an amazing project that elevated art to a new level. The inhabitants of Bergamo were stunned that the new city church would be created by trees. Unfortunately, the author of the project died in 2009 and will not be able to see the results of his grandiose plan. However, out of respect for Mauri in 2010, the project was launched. The organic cathedral consists of 42 columns created by spruce trunks. Around the young trees from the branches of chestnut and hazelnut, structures were created for support. Over time, trees will grow more and more and need less support. As a result, the technogenic structure will eventually become completely organic. Now 1800 fir trees are supported by 6000 meters of other plants, fastened with nails. But eventually these belts will be completely dismantled. The whole complex covers an area of 650 sq.m.
Church of the bones, Czech Republic.
This place does not stand out from the street. Meanwhile, many tourists go to look at the small chapel in the suburb of Kutná Hora. And do not be deceived by the appearance of the usual medieval church. When you enter the Sedlec crypt, you will quickly understand why this church is one of the most amazing on the planet. The fact is that it is artistically decorated with 40 thousand human bones. This place is more known as the Belfry. One of the most interesting art objects here is a chandelier hanging right in the center of the temple. A huge structure includes every human bone.
Snow Church, Germany.
What can be more natural for northern countries than building a structure from snow? The Bavarians decided on this step. A church was opened near the border with the Czech Republic on December 28, 2011. To emphasize its “cold” character, the building is also bathed in blue light. Residents hoped to open the church before Christmas, but the plans were prevented by the banal absence of snow in those parts. The snowy structure was built in the place of the church, which stood here since 1911. And the reason for its erection was the protest of local residents. After all, the nearest church was 90 minutes walk, which was quite far. Residents of the secluded village of Mitterfirmiansreut decided to build their own place for praying out of snow, because it was a lot that year. Thus, they hoped to draw the attention of the authorities to their own plight. The first divine service was held there on March 28, 1911. As a result, the snow melted with warming, but the mission was carried out. We learned about the snow church, even in the USA, where donations began to come from.As a result, in 1923 the stone chapel was built and then expanded. A modern project cost 100 thousand euros. 1400 cubic meters of snow and ice plates were spent on the erection of the building. The final church became 46 feet long, 22 feet wide and 13 feet high. In addition to the lack of snow, the problem was also the skepticism of the Catholic authorities – the local bishop refused even to consecrate the new structure.
Church on the tank, USA.
An unusual church was built by American artist Chris Kuksi, she evokes mixed feelings. Such a building is associated with warlike crusades, but today religion has become much more peaceful. The project was shown in Kansas in 2007. The Church embodied the long cooperation of God and War, which the man united. Sadly, religion has long been the occasion for murder, as the sculptor showed in this controversial grotesque work. Inflatable church, Holland.
Meet, Transparante Kepk – inflatable church. I must say, this product is in demand. After all, it can be moved and quickly deployed anywhere. Such a project was carried out by the philosopher Frank Los. Its transparent church has a size of 5 by 8 meters and even its small bell tower. Inside can accommodate about 30 people. Currently, the church is touring the country, appearing at festivals, corporate and private events. Nevertheless, it does not hold traditional services, it’s just a format with an emphasis on philosophy, which allows you to more deeply touch important life issues. The church has even a website, where they talk about the events taking place there – weddings, funerals, Christmas.
Transparent church, Belgium.
Such an unusual temple was created by the architects Pieterzhan Gijs and Arnaut van Warenberg. The rays of the setting sun pass right through the church, making it transparent. And such a project was implemented in the Belgian region of Haspengów. The church was the object of a long-term installation called Z-OUT. Its goal is the unexpected construction of non-standard structures in various public places throughout the country for the next 5 years. The church itself consists of a hundred layers, which are made up of 2000 steel plates. Depending on the position of the observer, this structure may look either completely integral, or even virtually disappear.
The smallest church in the world, the USA.
Not everyone strives to build a giant church that inspires awe and respect. This church is located right in the middle of the pond, on a wooden platform. All details about the unusual structure are told at the billboard on the roadside. The church was built in 1989, its area is only 28 squares. Inside can fit only two people. The building does not belong to a certain confession, just here a person can turn to his God. Several years ago, there was information that even there had been a marriage – together with the bride and groom, the priest also was inside. And the rest of the guests settled on boats, not far from the island. The church opens at the request of guests, and you can get there only by water.
In Russia, the problem of the lack of churches in some places has been solved in a rather unusual way. Old railroad cars were used for this purpose. This can be explained by taking into account the area of Russia. And do not consider such a phenomenon modern. It turns out that churches located in wagons have their origin in Russia since 1890. They traveled all over the country. In 2000, a mobile church-car was opened in honor of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. In 2002, RZD transferred the Novosibirsk diocese special church-car in the name of St. Nicholas of Myra. There are also special churches at the disposal of the church for transporting the relics of the saints.
Church on a rock, Georgia.
This unique church is located not on the rock, but on the stone pillar of Katzha, which is in the Chiatura district. At the top were archaeological excavations, showing that there was a cult place before the Christian times. The scientists also found the remains of an ancient church there. It existed here between the 6th and 8th centuries, having pagan roots. Here the gods of fertility prayed. The church was rebuilt, and today one Christian monk permanently resides and serves there. He has been in the church for more than 20 years, and all communication with the outside world is due to a rusty metal vertical staircase. It is even called a ladder to the sky, after all to the top of the whole 40 meters. Chapel of the sunset, Mexico.
This church is more like a huge sculpture than a chapel. This memorial chapel is located in Acapulco, Mexico. It looks both monumental, but also open. After all, there are slots high in the walls, and through the entrance visitors can admire the sea. By the chapel you can climb the stairs, because it is located high, above the line of trees and boulders.
Concrete church, Italy.
This structure does not combine with the grace inherent in most religious buildings. The Italian architectural company Fuksas created such a parish complex in Foligno. Surprisingly, the project won a national contest to find a form for new churches. The main thing that distinguishes this structure is its high strength. The church should become a symbol of rebirth in the city after a possible earthquake. And the lighting here is natural, given by the heavens themselves. The rays of the sun fall inside the concrete church through holes of a bizarre shape.
This small wedding chapel is located in a picturesque place at the Risonara resort near the Kobucizawa hotel. The church is located directly on the pond and consists of two leaves. One of them is made of steel, and the other is made of glass. The metal part has acrylic glass and a floral pattern in the form of a grapevine. It is illuminated outside during the day, and at night from the inside. This leaf opens at the most eccentric moment of the wedding ceremony, when the groom kisses the bride.
Sliding chapel, Colombia.
The church is made of glass, steel and wood in such a way that from a hard and immovable, intimate place to turn into a fairly large chapel. It combines the beauty of nature and design possibilities. This building was created by the architect Daniel Bonilla. The church is “a passage between two worlds, known and unknown, light and darkness.” When the door opens, it has an important psychological effect. After all, a person not only sees the landscape, nature as if beckons him to touch it. When the church changes its size, the place for the altar turns into a place for the choir, the main nave becomes lateral, and the chapel itself becomes part of the landscape, harmoniously integrating into it. Geometric chapel, Spain.
This building combined the weight and strength of concrete with the ultra-light origami figures. The chapel was created by SM.AO, which chose to create a minimalist interior inside the harsh forms. The church is located on the top of a small hill, it does not have any sources of artificial light. This structure is visible from a distance of 2 kilometers. Inside the church there is nothing at all, only at the point of falling rays is a cross that emphasizes the symbolism of the project itself.
Christian church in Beijing, China.
This church is little like traditional Christian structures of this kind. It is very open, bright and outwardly angular. The building not only lets in a lot of light, but also replaces the traditional churchyard with its terrace on the roof. This open space is specially designed for parishioners. The building fits perfectly into the urban landscape, but next to it there is a feeling of holiness. And the vertical towers of this church are visible for many kilometers.
Forest Chapel, USA.
In this place, even the notorious atheists will want to stay for a couple of hours. This unusual church is located in the forest near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It is very interesting to see how metal corner farms could simulate the growth of living trees. And in the sun, the glass begins to shine beautifully. As a result, a transparent facade along with the farm gives an idea of a large forest, and not a carefully built chapel. Only within her, a person begins to see all those unusual minute details that shaped this architectural creation. Built such a church was back in 1980 by Frank Lloyd Wright. The goal was to show the delights of nature, the correct planning of buildings can not affect the beautiful natural species. All materials for building the chapel were of local origin.
Church of the Holy Angelic Virgin Mary, Holland.
This Catholic structure is located in the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Rotterdam. There was built in the XIX century a chapel in the Neo-Gothic style, but it could not withstand unfavorable soil conditions. In 1963, the old building was demolished, and the basement for the new building was the basement of the original church. The new chapel is in the center of the site, where all the paths of the cemetery lead. The church is distinguished by its golden ceiling, unusual roof and wavy wall. The main inner color is deep blue, like the vestments of the Virgin Mary in many Renaissance paintings. The walls bear the liturgy texts in various languages, which reflects the cultural diversity of Rotterdam. The interior is quite intimate, with an aura of tranquility and austerity. The golden ceiling is artificially illuminated from below, gently shining. A hole is made in the roof, through which the concrete altar is illuminated. The total area of the church is 110 square meters, and its construction was completed in 2001. Breathable Church, USA.
In the city of Hope, Rhode Island, there is a joint Methodist church. When her needs exceeded the existing areas, it was decided to build a new building. It happened on the basis of an ugly building dating back to the year 1970. For the new church used prefab wooden structures and vinyl siding. The building is made “breathing”, that is, it has high transparency and connection between spaces. The main internal elements are also twisted in the form of a spiral. The construction was completed in 2008.
Parish Church of Santa Monica, Spain.
It is rare to see such a building, and it is also a church. The project belongs to the architects Ignasacio Vicens and Jose Ramos. One can safely say that their creations in Madrid are unique. After all, the building unites in itself everything that is necessary for the parish. There are here both the offices and the residence of the priest himself. Architects describe the building as a “frozen explosion”. The church consists, in fact, of two buildings. The first is a chapel with a large portico, and the second – a reinforced concrete dwelling. The total capacity of this church is 77 people.
Caterpillar Chapel, Switzerland.
This chapel is another example of the fact that the church can have a non-standard appearance. The temporary premise was built specifically for the hospital in De Saint-Loup. The main building here was reconstructed in 2007, and they built a temporary place for religious services. Nevertheless, the chapel, outwardly reminiscent of its folds caterpillar, does not look flimsy at all. It is built of their folded, like origami, wooden panels and transparent plastic, covered with a cloth. This structure allows natural light to penetrate into the room. The development of an unusual form was carried out with the help of a computer program, it was she who cut out the panels with a thickness of 6 centimeters. The axis of the new church lies from east to west, it is open on each side. Earth Chapel of Reconciliation, Germany.
This is not just a church, simple and concise. The chapel is also an object that reconciles different groups of the population. The building appeared on the site of a former similar church, which arose here in 1894. But then it was destroyed in 1961, as there was a wall separating the two parts of Germany. The new temple was built from scratch, and the material for it was rammed earth, into which clay was also mixed. The authors of the project were the architects Rudolf Reiterman and Peter Sassenrah.
