The most secret projects of the American special services

Scientists and researchers are constantly limited in their search due to lack of funding. But the military does not usually have problems with money. As a result, those engineers and scientists who work for government special services can engage in very unusual and interesting things.

They do not actually bear responsibility for their work. After all, even a major failure will be hidden under the stamp “Top Secret”, and all losses will be written off with a slight stroke of the pen.

What is happening in the depths of the CIA, one can only guess. American intelligence is credited with falsifying the disembarkation on the moon, and developing with the subsequent spread of deadly viruses. But there are some secret projects, which all the same became known to the public.

The most secret projects of the American special services

“Nutmeg”.

Americans did not immediately decide to test an atomic bomb on their continent. Initially, the tests were conducted in the Pacific Ocean, on special lands. For the United States, this approach was quite beneficial. After all, explosions could be carried out without fear in a vast territory, remote from human megacities. However, transportation of specialists and materials to distant distances became quite expensive. The task was to find a safe place on the territory of the country, such that it was not far from the place of development of nuclear weapons. The scientists worked on it in Los Alamos, New Mexico. A project called “Nutmeg” was created, the purpose of which was to find such a place. It seemed that the desert in the wilderness would be an ideal option. Such a place was found in Nevada. Especially since there were already built runways, which were used during the teachings of the Second World War. For the trial, a land plot of 687 square kilometers, owned by the state, was allocated. Today it is known as the Nevada Test Site, and in it the most sensitive area was “Zone 51”. They say that it is there that they are engaged in the study of extraterrestrial objects.

Project “Aquiline”.

In the early 1960s, Americans decided to start developing and then testing the first unmanned controlled aircraft. As a result, based on those works, the “Predator” aircraft were created, which are used in the latest military operations, in particular, in the Middle East. The device was designed so that it became similar and resembled a bird – eagle or buzzard. Inside the plane there was a camera that shot everything that was happening. Also, the device was literally stuffed with electronic tracking equipment and sensors. The original goal of the project was to study the mysterious water apparatus that the USSR created and which, as it became known with the help of satellite data, was tested on the Caspian Sea. Until now, the project remains classified. And the fact that the “Aquiline” had to learn more about our ekranoplane, told British journalists. The drone was created and even passed the test. However, frequent crashes during landing forced the authorities to close this program.

The most secret projects of the American special services

Projects “Ornithopter” and “Insectopter”.

The CIA did not give the idea of a successful copying of living creatures in technology. What could be better than remotely controlled robots, which apparently can not be distinguished from animals or birds? The Ornithopter project was precisely aimed at creating an apparatus copying a bird. He had to merge with nature as much as possible and be able to wave his wings like a living feathered creature. A small drone was supposed to look like an ordinary black. It was assumed that this “bird” can sit on the windowsills and then take pictures of everything that happens in the building. And the project of an insectopter had to create an even smaller machine. Outwardly, it should have resembled a dragonfly. However, copying nature was a rather difficult task. As a result, the CIA chose to simply use animals for its intelligence purposes. In particular, pigeons with special collars were used, in which a camera was built. But the weight of the equipment turned out to be quite heavy for poor birds. They returned home, but did it on foot. The pigeons simply did not have the strength to fly back. And this direction of the project was finally closed. But the strangest scientific direction was the development of “Sound Kisa”. Eavesdropping devices were implanted directly into domestic cats. However, this development was abandoned after one living agent moved the car, and the second too far away from home, in search of food.

The most secret projects of the American special services

Project “57”.

Having acquired nuclear weapons, it was necessary to study its properties and capabilities. Several special projects have been created for this purpose. This, in particular, was conducted at the test site in Nevada. An imitation of the case was made when a nuclear-armed aircraft exploded in the sky, and a radioactive substance was sprayed into the atmosphere. The experiment was the first in America to test a “dirty” bomb. Scientists have calculated that when a detonation of explosives surrounding a nuclear warhead can stop a chain reaction, but plutonium will still fall into the atmosphere. However, for certain it was unknown, it was unclear how much radioactive material would be released into the air, and how far it could spread. Military and special services decided that carrying out such tests is necessary for the country, because more and more warheads began appearing in the aircraft. As a result, sooner or later there was to be a catastrophe involving an aircraft carrying nuclear weapons. So it happened, much earlier than many believed. For the experiment, a polygon called Zone-13 was chosen. On it, the workers placed thousands of sticky bowls. These metal products were treated with adhesive resin. She had to capture and retain the particles of plutonium trapped in the atmosphere after an air explosion. Pseudo-seals were created that could show the effect of the explosion in the conditions of urban buildings. Near them paved roads and even parked cars. To understand how plutonium will affect living creatures, 109 dogs, 31 rats, 10 sheep and 9 donkeys were placed in special cells. The explosion occurred on April 24, 1957 at 6:27 am. The warhead was blown up so that an airplane crash happened. After the settling of radioactive dust, it turned out that 895 square acres of the territory were infected. Plutonium is one of the most dangerous and deadly substances known to man. If only one millionth of this element gets into our body, it will cause death. At the same time, plutonium retains its mortal danger for 20 thousand years. Thanks to those tests, scientists learned quite a lot about the action of plutonium. Experimental animals helped in this. Only here the results of the study remained classified. The Americans found that plutonium does not penetrate deep into the soil. He gathers at the top of it, staying there. The project lasted a year, and the zone was so badly infected that it was simply not worth cleaning. Yes it was and it is impossible. As a result, the polygon was cordoned off with barbed wire, and all materials, including cars, were burned.

The most secret projects of the American special services

Dr. Frieslav.

It’s hard even to name the project, rather, it’s more of a mission. In January 1968, a B52G bomber flew over Greenland with a secret mission. Suddenly a fire broke out on the plane. Almost all crew members were rescued, jumping out with a parachute. The apparatus itself crashed into the glaciers of Greenland. But when they hit the ground, explosives detonated at least three nuclear bombs on board. A powerful explosion spread over a large territory of tritium, uranium and plutonium. Military and special services faced the same “57” project, only realized in practice. A strong flame melted the ice, and at least one bomb went under the ice to the bottom of the ocean. The military tried to find it, but the operation failed to succeed.Project “57” has already given enough information about what happens when an explosive explodes around a nuclear warhead. It was known that the radioactive substance spreads over a large area. However, the military and the CIA did not expect that they would have to face such a thing so soon. Therefore, simply there was no rapid reaction group, prepared and equipped properly, in order to eliminate the consequences of such a catastrophe. And in Greenland sent a hastily assembled group of scientists and military, so they tried on the spot to cope with the heaviest radioactive pollution in history due to the explosion of a “dirty” bomb. A team called “Dr. Frieslaw” found only half of the ejected radioactive material. The specialists cleared the territory for 8 months. They collected 10.5 thousand tons of radioactive fragments, ice and snow. They were then taken to South Carolina, where they were subsequently destroyed. Operation “Morning Light”.

And this top-secret operation is connected with clearing the territory of radioactive contamination. Only this time it was not the Americans, but the Russians who became its source. In September 1977, the USSR launched the Cosmos-954 satellite into space. Naturally, he had to spy on the US, among other things. We hung the device about 4 tons. Just a few months after the launch of the device, the Americans realized that it has problems. In December, experts reported that the Cosmos-954 began to descend from its orbit. If the USSR does not immediately take any measures, the apparatus will fall to Earth. Analysts set to work, they calculated that in case of inaction of the Soviets, the satellite would make an emergency landing on the territory of North America. The Carter administration applied to the USSR, our military, were forced to admit that about 30 kilograms of enriched uranium are on board the facility. The CIA and the US government decided not to report this to the public so as not to cause panic. After all, this could entail a speech by the people with unknown consequences. The public did not know anything about the impending catastrophe. But at that time America already had a prepared team that could react to such incidents. People were warned and began to wait for their performance as soon as the satellite fell to Earth. The device really landed in North America. It happened a thousand miles north of Montana, in the Canadian tundra. Quite quickly, experts on radioactive cleaning of the area got to the disaster site. They worked there for several months, having managed to detect about 90% of all the wreckage of the satellite. Already later, the authorities calculated that if he had made one extra turn in orbit, he would have fallen into a much more populated territory on the East Coast of the United States.

The most secret projects of the American special services

The Kiwi Project.

60 years of the last century marked the race to the moon of two superpowers. However, few people know that near the well-known Zone-51 was another classified object – Zone-25. There, American experts were preparing an even more loud project – a flight to Mars on a rocket using nuclear fuel. This idea was named NERVA. The “Orion” spacecraft designed for its implementation was to become a high-rise building with a 16-storey building. It was planned that he could deliver 150 people to Mars at once in 124 days. At the start of the rocket, there was to be a huge cloud of radioactive dust that would have generated nuclear engines. At full load, it would be heated to a temperature of about 2 thousand degrees and cooled by liquid nitrogen. Scientists of Los Alamos decided to check what will happen if one of these engines suddenly explodes. This project was called Kiwi. In January 1965, this engine was launched with nuclear fuel and it was no longer cooled. When the reactor was heated to 4 thousand degrees, it exploded. A violent explosion scattered 45 kilograms of radioactive fuel a quarter of a mile. Scientists took to the air and measured the amount of radiation that got into the atmosphere. However, those data remained classified. And after five months there was already a real accident – the engine overheated in the assembly of another prototype, Phoebe. The cause of the explosion was a randomly empty container with liquid hydrogen.

The most secret projects of the American special services

Kempster-Lacroix project.

When the Americans developed their invisible aircraft, the project was called “Oscar”. Then all new technologies were created in “Zone-51”. Scientists tried to make the plane disappear from the radar field of view or was as inconspicuous for them as possible. For this purpose, materials were created that could absorb the radiation from tracking devices. The USA used its latest developments related to space, as well as the newest electronics, in projects. But then followed Kennedy’s order to make a secret reconnaissance flight over Cuba. The United States was very anxious to find the nuclear-armed missiles installed there by the USSR. The plane was not yet ready enough, despite all the efforts of its creators. To urgently solve the invisibility problem, the Kemper-Lacroix project was proposed. Scientists have decided that it is necessary to place large electronic guns in front and behind on the plane. They had to shoot whole ion clouds of charged particles. They would absorb all the waves sent by enemy radars. And the plane would thus become invisible to them. However, it quickly became clear that such a powerful radiation would be fatal to the pilot. But scientists did not give up – a special protective suit was created. But the first test flight showed that such equipment is too inconvenient and cumbersome, making it difficult to fly an airplane. Then the Kemper-Lacroix project was ingloriously shut down.

The most secret projects of the American special services

Project “Teak and Orange”.

Among the many projects of the US special services there were also clearly erroneous, like this one. An ill-considered and dangerous idea was to carry out a nuclear explosion in the air. The project seemed to have become a visual picture of how mad scientists with their experiments can simply destroy the entire planet. As part of the program, the scientists decided to blow up two 3.8 megaton bombs in the upper atmosphere above the Johnston Atoll, 750 miles west of Hawaii. A bomb by the name of Teak was blown up 50 miles above the ground, and Orange – at 28. America wanted by studying the consequences of the explosions to find out whether the USSR was doing something like that. The fireball created in the sky simply burned the eyes of all living things that were within a radius of 225 miles from the explosion. All the creatures that looked up at this moment in this zone without protective glasses, just blinded. Among them were hundreds of rabbits and monkeys that flew on the plane at this moment. Unfortunate animals fixed their heads so that they looked directly at the explosion and could not look away. Most of the Pacific Ocean space has been left without radio communication. The shock of the spectacle was so strong that one of the engineers said in horror that people almost burnt the ozone layer. But even before the test, some scientists warned that the effect of explosions could be disastrous. Nevertheless, the military continued their experiment.

The most secret projects of the American special services

Operation “Argus”.

The Americans continued to carry out high-altitude explosions, carrying them out this time within the framework of the Argus program. In the framework of it, missiles with nuclear warheads were first launched from ships. This happened in August and September 1950 from the side of a military American ship anchored off the coast of South Africa. Then the X-17 rockets lifted three warheads high into the sky at once. They exploded at an altitude of about 500 kilometers. One can only guess at the true cause of nuclear tests in outer space. Scientists have suggested that such an explosion in the magnetic field of our planet, but above the atmosphere, can create a powerful electronic impulse. It can create serious hindrances for Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles, if they will at this time fly to America. However, the results of the experiment showed that the generated magnetic impulse will still not be serious enough to somehow affect the rockets. So the project turned out to be dangerous, but ultimately useless.
