Statistics suggest that most of us live in more or less large cities. We are surrounded by a large number of people, transport, around everything breathes civilization. Today the distances are rapidly decreasing, and the speeds of movement are inexorably growing. The phrase “the man’s foot has not stepped here” begins to lose its meaning, because we visited even the most remote places. In some of which, where not even one hour to fly, but to civilization is not one hundred and thousand kilometers, people even live. Let’s talk about the 10 most remote and deaf places of human habitation.
From the continental coast of Chile, this place is located at a distance of 3,200 kilometers, to the nearest inhabited place, the island of Pitcairn, from here 1,819 kilometers. The locals call the island of Rapa Nui, or Big Rapa, and we know it as Easter Island. The area of the island is about 164 square kilometers, it is home to about 4000 people. The capital and the only city is Hanga-Roa. The island was annexed in 1988 by Chile. The place would remain unknown to a wide circle if there were not found statues of compressed volcanic ash, or moai. The Polynesian aborigines believe that the images of the ancient ancestors are stored in the idols. The statues are at least 500 years old, but who and how they created them, remains a mystery. Many believe that the stone faces look towards the sea, but this is not so – they are turned deep into the island. Once upon a time the Easter Island was covered with a dense forest, so the researchers say. Today there are no trees here, it is obvious that they were cut down for the purpose of building sleds and forests to transport massive statues. Previously, the route to this place took several weeks, now an airport is built on the island, which takes scientists and tourists from the capital of Chile, Santiago. The island was opened on Easter Sunday in 1722 by the Dutch Roggeven, which gave such an unusual name to this place. For a long time in the Middle Ages it was believed that in these places of the ocean there must be a lost continent, as if in opposition to Eurasia. The opening of the Easter Island, with its incomprehensible statues and tablets, has strengthened many in this opinion. However, today scientists have proved that for geological reasons the island could not be a part of anything more. At one time it was slightly larger, but the rising waters of the World Ocean changed its appearance.
Peninsula of Cape York, Australia.
In itself, the smallest continent is quite remote from all the others, as a result of this, unusual natural conditions arose. But within Australia there are places where remoteness is most pronounced. In the northern part of the mainland there is the Cape York peninsula with a population of 18 thousand people. Basically, these aborigines, who have preserved their traditions and remain unchanged, people here live as they did several centuries ago. This remote peninsula is also one of the last undeveloped people. Local rainforests and savannahs are of global ecological importance. Here is a unique for Australia river system, which gives a quarter of the drain of the whole continent. Today such places are becoming very popular with tourists, however it is rather difficult to get there, even taking into account the technology, especially during the rainy season. In addition, a number of settlements can only fly by helicopter, and even then – in good weather. So this place can be called really remote. On the northern tip of the peninsula is Cape York, Australia’s most northern point.
La Rinconada, Peru.
In South America, few can compete for privacy with the town of La Rinconada miners located in the Peruvian Andes. The height of the place above the sea level is an impressive 5180 meters, this city is the highest mountain on Earth. La Rinconada is located on the permafrost of a local glacier, you can get here by a dangerous, winding and unreliable mountain road.It will take more than one day to reach this way, taking into account the high air density at such a high altitude, it quickly becomes clear that not everyone can become a resident of a remote town. Naturally, there is no question of comfort and excess. Nevertheless, the population of La Rinconada is 50 thousand people, who are mainly engaged in mining from under the glacier ore with gold. Today the town has a reputation as a refuge for the most desperate workers, many of whom are allowed to work without any payment, they are only required to give part of the gold discovered to the city administration.
Antarctic station McMurdo.
Indeed, further than Antarctica, there is simply nowhere to climb. On this continent there are no aboriginals at all, and all the people living there are scientists from different countries. Most of all scientists gathered at the McMurdo research station, located on the island of Ross, in the northern part of Antarctica. It employs about 1200 researchers and workers, whose main working hours are warm months. MakMurdo is located so far from other settlements that a trip there by ordinary means would take several months. Today, near the station are built runways, which makes it possible to relatively easily get from the Antarctic town. As a consequence – some features of coziness for local residents who have their own anthem, television and even golf courses.
Ittoqqortoormiit city in Greenland.
This city with a hard-to-pronounce and untranslated name is located on the territory of the world’s largest island. In Greenland, only about 57 thousand people live, and in this small town there live 500 of them. The district on which Ittoqqortoormiit is located is comparable in area to England, for each inhabitant there are about 300 square kilometers of the territory. The city is located on the shores of the Scorsbysund fjord, the largest in the world (about 350 kilometers long). Ittoqqortoormiit was founded in 1925 by Norwegians, who sought to gain a foothold on these lands. The food itself is extracted by hunting for whales and polar bears, in the summer fishing is popular. Even the sea near the city is covered with ice most of the time, so you can get here by water only for three months in the summer. At a distance of 40 kilometers from the city there is an airport, but the planes here are a rarity. As a result, this Greenlandic city is considered the northernmost inhabited locality of the Earth.
Islands of Kerguelen.
This group of islands is also called the Islands of Recklessness – the reason is their isolation and remoteness from the Big Land. The archipelago includes 1 large island and about 300 small ones. From here to Australia about 5 thousand kilometers, and up to low-altitude Antarctica – about 2 thousand. The Kerguelen Islands are located in the southern Indian Ocean, just between the three continents – Africa, Australia and Antarctica. On these scraps of land there is no runway to get here one week to sail on the ship from the island of Reunion, which is near Madagascar. There are no local residents on the islands either – the entire local population of 100-200 people is a group of French hermit scientists who claimed the rights to these lands. The Archdiocese of Unconsciousness was opened in 1772, since that time some famous travelers have traveled here. It is enough just to remember James Cook, who visited the islands in 1776. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the island was used as a whaling base and a place for hunting seals, while animals in the vicinity were not exterminated. Today there is a French research station here, as well as a missile defense system.
In the Pacific Ocean there is only one British overseas territory – the island of Pitcairn in the southern part of the ocean, discovered in 1767 by Philippe Carteret. The name of the island was given the same as the son of an officer who saw these lands. The nearest islands are Tahiti and Gambier from here several hundred kilometers. The population of the island is only about 50 people, most of whom are descendants of the rebels from the legendary Bounty ship and taken with them Tahitians. Those noteworthy events are reflected in the book “The Mutiny on the Bounty,” they were screened several times. Curiously, in 1808, during the bloody showdown among residents, one white man, John Adams and 8 women, and more than twenty children were left alive. Today, the descendants of these people are engaged in peaceful occupations – fishing, farming and making souvenirs. It is curious that a rather significant article of local income is the sale of stamps, which are very rare, which is undoubtedly appreciated by collectors ready to pay a lot of money for extraction. You can get here by water from New Zealand within 10 days, because there is no runway here. Pitcairn is the state with the smallest population in the world.
Alert village, Canada.
This place has not only an interesting name, but also its own characteristics. From here to the North Pole only 800 kilometers, hence, this is the most northern inhabited place on the Earth. The village is located in Novanut District, and for those who got here the watch period is neither much nor little five years. Constantly there live 5 people, and also about 70 people of military and meteorologists. Of course, it is quite cold here, often the temperature drops to -40, a unique location leads to a summer 24-hour light day, and in winter – to a round-the-clock polar night. The station has military equipment for radio intercepts and weather sensors. The nearest inhabited place is 2100 kilometers from here, and even this is a tiny fishing village. The present large city of Alberta has been removed altogether by 3,578 kilometers. Alert has its own runway, which is used mainly by the military. And then, often the airfield is simply not available due to bad weather conditions. For example, in 1991, the arriving aircraft crashed, not flying just 30 kilometers to the village. Then, as a result of the fall, 4 people died at once, the rest did not wait for help, frozen in the snow. Rescuers overcame the resistance of the storm only 30 hours later, but it was too late.
District of Motuo, China.
The Chinese themselves claim that no one of the roads leads to this place. This autonomous region is located in Tibet, its civilization has not been touched, allowing its secrets to be preserved. It is extremely difficult to get there, the impassable road runs through the Himalayan permafrost, as well as a 200-meter suspension bridge. A full-fledged transport communication was never established, all the initiatives of a normal road were destroyed by mountain avalanches and mudflows. About 20 years ago there was a road from Motuo to the outside world, however it lasted only a few days, now forests are rampant here, hiding the remains of human defeat before nature. But this allowed the district to preserve its pristine beauty. The Buddhists themselves consider these lands sacred, the nature here unfolded in full force, feeling freedom from man. It turns out that as much as 10% of the entire Chinese flora is in Motuo.
Tristan da Cunha.
This island archipelago is rightly considered to be the most deaf and remote place on the planet. Tristan da Cunha is located in the southern part of the Atlantic. From here to St. Helena 2161 km, to South Africa – 2816 km, and South America is located even further – at a distance of 3360 kilometers. The islands are tiny, but they have a rich history of their own. These places were discovered in 1506 by the Portuguese Tristan da Cunha, which gave the name to the lands. Later, the United Kingdom, because of fear of a possible return of Napoleon, who lived “in the neighborhood,” annexed these lands. In the 19th century a group of English, Americans and Italians settled here. Now the island is home to 271 people, he himself is still the property of Great Britain. On the archipelago there is television and even satellite internet, but this does not prevent it from being the most remote and secluded place. Construct here the runway is hampered by the mountainous terrain, so you can get to the island only with the help of fishing trawlers, few of which are harvested in these waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Once a month a flight is here, the ships are equipped with seats for passengers. It is curious that these islands are mentioned in the novel “The Children of Captain Grant”, whose characters searched for the missing expedition along the 37th parallel.
