The invention of writing became one of the greatest discoveries of mankind. Thanks to this information is transmitted from generation to generation. Today it is easy to read the old book and find out how our ancestors lived. As a result, we are as if immersed in the culture and way of life of long-disappeared people. However, there are a number of texts that remain a mystery even for scientists. Some are due to their deliberate entanglement by the authors, and some are due to the fact that they are written in “dead” languages, which are already incomprehensible to contemporaries. We will tell below about the 10 most interesting such texts, magical and religious content, whose codes and ciphers are still “fooled” by researchers and translators.
The Serafini Code.
This famous book was written between 1976 and 1978 by the Italian artist, architect and designer Luigi Serafini. The Seraphini Code can be considered a deliberate attempt to create something mysterious. A 360-page book appeared, which is nothing more than a visual encyclopedia of the unknown world, complete with maps, drawings of animals and plants. The code itself is written in an unknown language with an unknown alphabet, which did not succumb to intensive research by linguists. The book consists of two parts. One narrates about the world of nature, and the second – about a man. The very word “SERAPHINIANUS” stands for Strange and unusual representations of animals, plants and infernal incarnations from the depths of the consciousness of the naturalist / antinaturalist Luigi Serafini. “Since the text itself is absolutely incomprehensible, the Code quickly became the most famous work of art by Seraphini. There are many surreal paintings – bleeding fruits, a couple engaged in love and turning into a crocodile, fish in the form of flying saucers.Every drawings are extremely rich in detail and brightly colored. There are many theories about what is on the sa The author himself prefers to keep a meaningful silence from the time of the release of labor to the world in the 80s.The Code has both critics and admirers, they have generated many theories, some say that the text is completely written in a false language and there is no sense in it, while others try to find something mystical in the book, one thing is clear – no real answers about the Code have been received yet.
Linen book (Book of the Zagreb mummy, Liber Linteus).
This ancient text dates back to the times of the Etruscans. Once the culture of this people flourished in the territory of present-day Italy even before the appearance of the Roman Empire there. In addition to being one of the oldest and longest Etruscan documents, the text is notable for being the only known example of a book from underwear. Linen book is interesting in the context of its discovery. After the fall of the Etruscans, all the artifacts of their culture, including Liber Linteus, ceased to represent any value to the Romans. The fact that the book was preserved became possible thanks to the material on which it was written – flax. After the conquest of Egypt by the Romans, many adopted the customs of mummification, wrapping the body in cloth. It is thanks to this practice that the Linen Book, a useless artifact, was ultimately used as a wrapper for the funeral of the mummified body of the Egyptian tailor’s wife. The corpse was purchased hundreds of years later by Croatian officer Mihailo Baric, who wanted to decorate the wall with his mummy. After the death of the owner, the mummy fell in 1867 to the State Museum of Croatia. At first the tissue was stored separately, later the specialists found the letters on it and became interested. Egyptologists came to the conclusion that the written letters are Etruscan. Today little is known about this language. In total, the book contains 230 lines of text and 1200 surviving words from 2500-4000. Most of the inscriptions remained untranslated, the deciphered words make it possible to understand that the book was ritual, it described the rites of the ancient people, prayers.
Book of Soig.
The Middle Ages became famous for its mysterious and mystical texts. But few people compare in its mystery with the Book of Soig, a treatise on magic and the paranormal. The text still contains pieces that scientists could not translate. In general, the book mainly contains magical spells, instructions on astrology and demonology. The treatise of the 16th century is associated with the name of John Dee, a thinker of the Elizabethan age, who was interested in the occult. The scientist said that he owned one copy of this book, and he became literally obsessed with unlocking her secrets. Of particular interest to Dee was a series of encrypted tables, which he considered the key to some esoteric mystery. The task was not easy, because the author of the book used a number of methods of coding – the interchange of words in places and other mathematical algorithms. John Dee was so focused on cracking codes that he even went to Europe to meet with a famous expert in the magical community of Edward Kelly. With the help of the crystal Di received a response from the Archangel Uriel that the book was written in the Garden of Eden for Adam, and only Archangel Michael can decipher the texts. The scientist himself did not have time to decipher the secrets of the book so completely, doing it until his death. Although the existence of this document was known for certain, the Book of Soig was lost until 1994, when two copies of it were immediately found in England. Although the scientists carefully studied the texts, none of them could at least partially decipher the tables with which Dee was so carried away. It is considered that the book is closely connected with the Kabbalah, the mystical Jewish sect. The true meaning of the book today remains a mystery.
The Code of the Rohonets.
Another document that proved to be very resistant to any attempt at translation or decipherment was the Rohonets Code. This centuries-old book allegedly surfaced in Hungary in 1743. The code consists of 448 pages of text written in an unknown language. On each page there are 9 to 14 lines of incomprehensible symbols. Scientists say that this can be anything from early Hungarian to Hindi, because the language lacks some of the characteristic features of any of the known. And the alphabet contains much more characters than the main ones studied, with the exception of Chinese. The text itself is extremely interesting, but even more fascinating are the accompanying 87 illustrations. There are depicted different things – from landscapes, to military battles and secular life. But the Code also uses religious iconography, which is unique for a number of different religions, including Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. This means that the illustrations show simultaneously the signs of many different concessions. Several attempts were made to partially translate the Rohonts Code, each of which gave unique results. One scientist declared that the text bears a religious character, and another – that the book is a story of Vlach, a Latin culture that once flourished on the territory of modern Romania. But the most popular version of the origin of the document is its creation in the middle of the XIX century by Samuel Nemesch, a famous forger. Such an idea is controversial, because there is evidence that the text of the Code is not just nonsense. Nevertheless, the theory of forgery can not be completely refuted. Scientists are still hanging over the text, there is not even a single point of view about the order in which letters should be read – from left to right or vice versa, from the top down or from the bottom up.
These wooden plates from the Easter Island contain hieroglyphic letters. This is not so much text, as artifacts. Scientists are still trying to decipher the pictorial written form that arose on this small island. There were 25 such tablets, and in 1862 the last ones who could read in this ancient language were taken to slavery in Chile. In 1864, Bishop Eiro reported that he saw Rogno-rongo tablets in almost every home, but two years later, a series of civil strifes and colonization destroyed almost all the ancient artifacts. The mystery of stone carving on wooden plaques remains one of the largest unsolved linguistic in the world. It happened because of the complete isolation of Easter Island. As a result, Rongo-rongo was created without the influence of other languages. Scientists also received a unique opportunity to explore how writing developed. Like Egyptian hieroglyphs, Rongo-rongos are by their nature pictograms consisting of series and single characters. It is believed that the characters themselves could be keys, meaning some plants or animals common on the island before it was discovered by Europeans. Tablets Rongo-rongo has been devoted to a lot of research, but scientists have not been able to decipher the writing system. As a result, some experts say that this is not a letter at all, but a kind of decorative art. Recently it was possible to correlate symbols with the lunar calendar, which proves the meaningfulness of the hieroglyphs, but the mystery of Rongo-rongo remains undisclosed.
Cryptograms of Bale.
The history of the appearance of Baile’s ciphers could obscure the fantasy of Hollywood writers. So, in 1820 in Virginia, a stranger Thomas Bale left for storage in the hotel a box with important documents. When in 12 years it became clear that the owner of the papers did not return, Robert Morris opened the box. In addition to receipts and letters in the cache, three sheets were found, written with a number of numbers. Morris spent several years deciphering the mysterious pages. From the cover letter it followed that in 1817, Bale together with his detachment attacked the gold mine. The extracted treasures were safely hidden, and the ciphers told the exact location of the treasure and its description. In 1862, the elderly Morris handed the sheets to one of his young friends. He soon managed to decipher one page, the key was “Declaration of Independence.” The researcher, simply picking up books one by one, by a search method, tried to find the right one. Decipher the same, the main page, which narrated the whereabouts of the treasure and failed. Eventually, Baile’s code was published for universal access, giving people the opportunity to try their luck in search of treasure. Since the cryptogram and history itself became public, hundreds of treasure hunters have rushed into the terrain described in the sheet. But no one could find gold and Bail’s jewelry. There is a version that ciphers are a trivial fraud, especially as some details in history simply do not converge. Nevertheless, the search for Bale’s treasures, both by deciphering the cryptogram, and simply by digging through the specified terrain, continues. This is not surprising, the cost of the treasure is estimated at 30-40 million dollars.
This sculpture of the work of James Sanborn was established in 1990 before the CIA headquarters in Langsley. The secret is the text on the S-shaped copper plate. The code is so complex that even better than CIA cryptanalysts can not decipher it and understand what the artist wrote there. Originally, the sculpture was to become a monument to the work of intelligence on data collection, which glorified the agency. However, the artist decided not to limit himself to a beautiful work of art, but to go further. He did not have his own knowledge of encryption, Ed Schadt, the former head of the cryptographic center, was called to the rescue. The total code contains 865 characters, it is divided into 4 sections, each of which, presumably, is a partial key to the subsequent. Sanborn calls such encryption a riddle in a puzzle, which can be solved only by the most complex methods of decoding. The code of Sanborn and Shadet quickly attracted the attention of amateur cryptographers and professionals, the benefit was in a prominent public place.Experts in the CIA and the NSA tried their forces in hacking, there is even a community of thousands of participants on the Internet. All that was possible in twenty years – to decipher three of the four sections of the code. The first 7 years did not work at all, which greatly surprised Sanborn. The first three sections were encrypted with various methods, and a spelling error was deliberately added to the keys. The first section is the author’s text “Between the blackout and the absence of light lies the nuance of illusion.” The second – contains the text of the telegraph transmission with the coordinates of the point near the monument, there, by the way, nothing was found associated with the cipher. The third section is a paraphrased entry of the anthropologist Carter, who found the tomb of Tutankhamun. However, the fourth, most important and most complex section has remained unconquered. Despite the fact that Sanborn periodically gives clues about the keys, the 97 last characters remain unsolved.
The Urantia Book.
This religious and philosophical book was first published in 1955 in Chicago. Labor tries to expand the cosmic consciousness and strengthen spiritual perception through a discussion of the philosophy, cosmology and life of Jesus. The book was born in Chicago in the early XX century, the very issue of its emergence became the object of research and the foundation for the entire teaching. More than 2000 pages written by an unknown author. In 1925, Dr. William Sadler came into contact with a certain morbid man, who, being in a state of trance, spoke aloud texts. The monologues were recorded by the doctor and his stenographer. Sadler argued that the authorship of the book belongs to some supernatural beings who were authorized to transmit such priceless information. Urantia in the texts is called Earth itself, the book has many similarities with major religions, but also spends a lot of time discussing scientific theories. The first part of the book tells about the concept of the universe, the second – describes the geography of the universe. It is said that, in addition to the superuniverses, there is also our local, created by Jesus Christ and consisting of 1000 inhabited planets. The third part surveys the history of the Earth, the purposes of our world, and the latter describes the life of Christ. The whole story may sound like science fiction, but there is the thought that the Urantia Book is not a secret, but a simple forgery. Skeptics argue that Sadler and a group of proxies themselves compiled the book in the 1920s. Recent studies have confirmed that “Urantia” is plagiarized from many educational religious texts. And the scientific divergences of the materials of the Book with recognized dogmas are great. The problems of evolution and astronomy set out there corresponded to the ideas of the beginning of the century, but subsequent discoveries placed these facts in doubt. However, there was no final proof of the forgery. As a result, today there is an entire International Urantia Association with representations in 56 countries.
Also these books are known as a collection of Gospels from the Nag Hammadi library. The collection of books in leather bindings refers to the IV century, they are written in the Coptic language. Here in 1945, Egyptian farmers found the main texts of Gnosticism, a branch of Christianity, which existed since the II century. Adherents of the doctrine believed that true salvation can be achieved through deep self-understanding and understanding of higher reality. From the Christianity of the Gnostics, there was a different belief in God, the absence of discrimination against women, and religious tolerance. The texts refer to the I-III centuries, among the Gnostic Gospels there is the Gospel of Thomas, from Mary and even from Judah. Unique books were hidden in the bank, it is believed that in this way the priest hoped to protect them from the impact of centuries and from the Church, which views the Gnostics as heretics. Gnostic Gospels have changed a lot of owners, reselling on the “black” market. In the 1970s, they eventually fell into the hands of specialists and were translated into English.Since then, the new Gospels have become very popular, taking their place in various novels and films. The disputes about these texts do not cease, not only for their coincidence with the Bible, but also for some of the statements of Christ that are not reflected in the New Testament. In the list of found manuscripts, most of the records were recognized by scientists, who eventually translated the texts into a number of languages. In addition, books occupy an important place in the study of Gnosticism and its history as a system of beliefs. In academic and religious circles, with renewed vigor, disputes arose over previously unknown facts of the life of Jesus. Some believe that the Gnostic Gospels are just heretical fabrications, while others believe that these chronicles should be considered along with the generally recognized Bible and the New Testament.
The Voynich Manuscript.
Of all the strangest and mysterious texts found for hundreds of years, probably the most famous is the Voynich manuscript. This book was created by an unknown author in an unknown language, every cryptographer trying to decipher it was left out of work. It is known that the manuscript was created in the XV century, on a thin parchment, someone wrote 240 pages of text with pictures. The book has 170 thousand characters, and in the alphabet about 30 letters. Among the possible authors are called Roger Bacon, John Dee, Edward Kelly and others. The first known master of the mystery book was the Prague alchemist Bares, who already at the beginning of the 17th century tried to decipher what he had written. For 200 years the fate of the book was unknown until it finally emerged in the library of the Roman Jesuits. Having replaced several owners, the manuscript came in 1909 to Wilfred Voinich, a Polish bookseller. After his death, the book became the object of intense interest by the linguist and cryptographers who spent years studying the mysterious language and alphabet. There are many theories about the manuscript, in particular, it is believed that it is a collection of some kind of coded puzzles, that it is not yet written in an open language, that it should be read under a microscope and even that it was written in a state of trance under divine influence. All these are just theories, and more than half a century of studying the book the key has not yielded. The pages contain many drawings of plants and astronomical diagrams, biological processes and recipes. This gives the idea that there are instructions on medicine or alchemy, but this hypothesis has not been proved. The persistence of Voynich’s manuscript to deciphering gave birth to the idea of mystification. Critics of this view respond that the syntax of the book is too complex to be a fake. It is said that the technologies of that time and the ways of coding could allow to create such a joke. As a result, none of the arguments completely scientists do not suit. A recent radiocarbon analysis showed. That the age of the manuscript really refers to the fifteenth century, but the origin of labor and its purpose remain a mystery.
