The history of aeronautics is inseparably linked with inevitable accidents. You can remember the legendary Icarus, who fell from the sky into the water. The first wreck of aircraft came at the end of the XIX century. Then the number of accidents and casualties was quite high relative to the total number of flights. In the middle of the 20th century, the era of mass air travel began. This significantly increased both the number of victims and the number of tragedies.
When ballooning came to third world countries, this trend only worsened. The peak of the plane crash was reached in the 70’s, when the aircraft began to be used by terrorists. But over the past decades, much has been done to improve safety standards.
Although many are still afraid to fly by air, inexorable statistics show that the risk of dying in a plane crash today is quite low. More likely to get into an accident in a taxi on the way to the airport than in the plane itself. The reasons for such incidents can be different – this is the human factor, the failure of technology, weather and terrorism. Major disasters in the air remain part of the history, we recall the most significant of them.
At that time ballooning was determined by airships. Akron was one of the largest objects of its kind in the world. He could carry up to five aircraft and was designed to conduct naval reconnaissance. The airship was built in 1929 in the city of Akron, which gave it the name. Only a year and a half served the flying giant country. During this time, several minor accidents happened to him. But thanks to the events of April 4, 1933, the airship was destined to go down in history. When Akron flew past Barnegat lighthouse in New Jersey, a strong wind rose, which mercilessly struck the ship. The descending air currents caused the airship to decline rapidly, a strong leeway arose. When struck against the water, Akron collapsed. Then 73 people died, but only three managed to escape. The main cause of the tragedy was bad weather conditions and a mistake pilots who during the storm sent the ship to the open sea. The crew did not have any life jackets, nor any means for staying on the water. This catastrophe was the end point for the service of airships in the navy. After all, the main supporter of this, Admiral Moffet, died on Akron. And this catastrophe became the largest in the history of aeronautics.
The fall of the Turkish aircraft DC-10.
We can say that it was this tragedy that opened up a series of large and resonant accidents. The previous “record” for the number of victims was beaten at once by 2 times. The Turkish airbus flew on the route Ankara-Istanbul-Paris-London. In the capital of France, he was visited by a lot of rugby fans who were returning to England. Half an hour after take-off, the badly closed cargo compartment door opened. There was an explosive decompression, which swept a few seats overboard. There was a failure in the control of the machine. 77 seconds after the accident, the plane crashed into a mountain at a huge speed 37 kilometers from Paris. At the same time, the blow was such a force that there was nothing left of the plane and all who were in it. There was not even a fire at the crash site. 346 people died, including 11 crew members. The cause of the accident was the flight engineer, who in the bustle did not bother to check the cargo hatch door before departure. And the locking mechanism itself had design flaws. Catastrophe in Los Rodeos.
Unfortunately, aircraft do not only collide in the sky, but also on the ground. This incident occurred on March 27, 1977. Then at the airport of Los Rodeos, that on Tenerife two huge Boeing-747 collided. One flight took off at a speed of 250 km / h. But then another liner met him on the same strip. Tragedy was preceded by a terrorist act at another major airport in the Canary Islands. It was temporarily closed, as a result of which all the aircraft were heading to Los Rodeos. It is not surprising that his bands were overloaded. The planes stood in all parking lots and even taxiways. Boeing KLM at takeoff chose the wrong lane, misinterpreting the dispatch command. The situation was aggravated by a strong fog and problems with radio communication. As a result of this, a board of Pan American Company was boarding the take-off liner. On impact, all 234 passengers and 14 crew members of the Boeing KLM were killed. And from the passengers of the “Pan American”, 325 passengers and 9 members were killed. A terrible tragedy killed a total of all 583 people. Guilty in this were the pilots, bad weather and a combination of circumstances. That disaster was the largest in terms of the number of casualties in civil aviation. Air crash over the Atlantic.
The circumstances of the death of the Boeing 747 near the coast of Ireland on June 23, 1985 remain a mystery. The liner followed the course of Montreal-London-Delhi-Bombay. At an altitude of 9,400 meters in an airplane there was an explosion, its remains fell into the Atlantic Ocean. Then only 329 people died. It was the biggest air crash that happened over the sea. The investigation of the circumstances of that case took almost 20 years. It cost 130 million Canadian dollars. The Canadian authorities have established that the fault is all Indian extremists. The Sikh combat group, based in North America, put a bomb in the luggage. This Indian people waged a bloody war for their independence and decided to draw attention to their problem in this way. Although the security services were notified of the impending terrorist act, the explosives were on board the aircraft in one of the passengers’ bags. The explosion occurred 190 kilometers from the coast. On wounds of victims it was possible to establish a chain of events – explosion, disintegration of the plane. However, today the Sikhs say that they are not involved in those events. The tragedy was allegedly set up by US special services to discredit the freedom-loving people. A plane crash near Tokyo.
This tragedy remains the largest that happened to one plane. On August 12, 1985, 520 people died at once, and only 4 women were saved. And in this case, the accident occurred with the Boeing 747. The plane took off from Tokyo, heading for Tokyo. 12 minutes after the separation from the earth, the keel collapsed from the liner. The failure caused a number of failures – hydraulic failure, pressure in the cabin dropped. Boeing lost control and began to fall. At an altitude of 4,100 meters, the commander of the crew reported this. The team tried to correct the situation to the last by changing the thrust of the engines. The plane fell on the mountain, there was a strong fire on a steep slope. This greatly complicated the task of rescuers. They arrived at the scene of the accident only 14 hours after the accident. The investigation revealed that on June 2, 1978 the plane hit the landing strip with its tail. The repair was performed inadequately high, which led to the appearance of fatigue defects. The airline staff did not check the plane sufficiently, which led to the tragedy. Air crash above the Persian Gulf.
Sometimes neither pilots nor technicians are guilty of tragedy. Civilian aircraft can be shot down by the military. The most famous case occurred on July 3, 1988 with the airbus A300 of Iranian airlines. The flight was rather short, it was to fly 28 minutes to Dubai. The flight seemed simple – take off to an altitude of 4300 meters, follow the straight and landing. But at this time in the Persian Gulf operated cruiser US Navy Vinceness. He defended Kuwaiti transport from the attack of Iran and Iraq, which fought among themselves. According to official data of the American authorities, the cruiser mistakenly identified in the airbus an Iranian combat aircraft. From a distance of 20 kilometers on it were released 2 missiles, hit the target. The Americans recognized those events as a military incident, and the ship’s commander was not punished. As a result of the plane crash, 290 people died, including 66 children and 16 crew members. Iranian authorities believe that attacking an airplane in neutral waters is a crime.Only after 8 years the US agreed to pay the amount of $ 62 million as a voluntary act, and not as compensation.
Collision over Delhi.
It would seem, how can planes meet in the vast sky? Meanwhile, such cases are also encountered. This catastrophe has become one of the largest in general in the history of civil aviation and the most significant in the collision of two aircraft in the air. November 12, 1996 from Kazakhstan’s Shymkent flew Il-76, flying to Delhi. On board, besides the 10 crew members, there were 27 passengers. Later, from Delhi, Boeing-747, flying to Jeddah, flew into the air. On its board there were 312 people, mostly Indians, flying to Saudi Arabia for work. The IL-76 suddenly dropped to the altitude at which Boeing was flying. At 75 kilometers from Delhi, the planes crashed into each other at a speed of 500 kilometers per hour each. The force of the strike was 700 times stronger than in the collision of cars. More than 500 tons of burning metal fell to the ground, fragments flew for a distance of 8 kilometers. All people died. At the scene of the accident, the first to arrive were not rescuers, but looters. Rescuers could not even identify all the bodies of passengers. The crew of the Kazakhstan flight was guilty, but it is worth mentioning that at that time the airport would have been the only active civilian in the whole country. It was overloaded, which increased the risk of collisions.
The terrorist act of September 11, 2011.
In the morning of this day, a whole group of 19 terrorists captured 4 aircraft at once. Two of them were sent to the towers of the World Trade Center, which led to the complete destruction of skyscrapers. The third plane fell into the Pentagon building near Washington, and another fell near the city of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Then the plane killed 246 people. In total, as a result of the global terrorist attack, 2,977 people were victims. Personnel of those events flew the whole world. This caused a real chaos in the country. All commercial flights were canceled, domestic flights were also suspended. The official investigation showed that the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda under the leadership of Osama bin Laden is behind everything. The suicide bombers who took the plane passed the pilots’ courses and did not look like martyrs in appearance. The recorder explained that in one of the aircraft the passengers and crew members found out that the other captured planes had been sent to the buildings. A struggle ensued, during which terrorists sent the plane into the ground. It is believed that initially he was wanted to be sent to the Capitol. Those events significantly changed the modern world. The governments of the largest countries have toughened the fight against terrorism. America, in search of the main culprits, unleashed a war in the Middle East. However, there are many questions about those events. Perhaps the main organizers were the American special services. Thus, they strengthened their influence, and the country’s largest financial magnates earned profits from the military company.
Incident with the Korean Boeing.
In this case, the civilian aircraft was shot down by a military man. It happened near the island of Sakhalin. South Korean Boeing-747 flew from New York to Seoul. The route was supposed to pass over the Pacific Ocean, skirting the territory of the USSR. This was the height of the Cold War, which is why the relationship between the two superpowers was particularly tense at that time. September 1, 1983 in the air was the same as an American scout RC-135. At one time, he crossed the course with a passenger liner deviating from his path. When Boeing invaded the air borders of the USSR, our air defense troops took the plane for the military. Two interceptor Su-15 were raised to the sky. They caught up with the intruder and accompanied him. Then, on command from the ground, two missiles were fired at Boeing. The plane fell into the sea, and all 269 people were killed. Events caused a huge resonance in the world. In Korea burned Soviet flags, Reagan accused the USSR of crimes against humanity.Further investigation showed that the pilots simply misconfigured the autopilot and until the last moment they did not suspect that they had deviated from the route. Interceptor pilots also did not see.
Catastrophe near Smolensk.
These events occurred recently, but the reason for them is almost clear. On April 10, 2010, Tu-154 Polish Air Force crashed near Smolensk. Then 96 people died. Tragedy flew around the world, because the liner was the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife, almost all the army commanders of the country, politicians, prominent public and religious figures. At one point the country remained beheaded. In Poland, a week of mourning was declared. The plane flew in conditions of a strong fog, about which the crew was notified. The pilots were asked to board a spare airfield, but they refused. The plane caught the trees, turned around and began to fall apart in the air. According to the official version, the crew’s errors were the cause of the accident. However, the Polish authorities are resting on the fact that the pilots were forced to board the Russian dispatcher in such conditions.
