Smartphones and communicators

Smartphone

(smartphone) is a mobile phone with enhanced functionality comparable to a pocket personal computer (PDA). Also for the designation of some devices that combine the functionality of a mobile phone and a PDA, the term “communicator” is often used.

Communicator

(English Communicator, PDA Phone) – a pocket personal computer supplemented with the functionality of a mobile phone.

PDAs and communicators are full-fledged mini computers.

Yes, unlike mobile phones and some smartphones, as it has such components as RAM (in other words, memory for temporary storage of data during processing), the processor itself is one of the main advantages of PDAs and communicators, permanent memory (called hard disk is difficult, but it is present), some models are even equipped with video cards. Ordinary phones do not have all these devices, or rather they have, but they are all too weak. In addition, the PDA and communicators installed operating system (OS), most often it is a Windows Mobile system specially designed for PDAs and communicators, and is a mini copy of the original.
As a final fact, you can imagine such kind of programs as “ported games”. “Ported games” are ordinary computer games that have been adapted for the PDA or communicator, it is adapted, and not written from scratch. On the example of the game Warcraft, you can see that all the functionality, graphics, features, and so on are stored one to one. Also, PDAs and communicators support most of the computer formats, they have specially written programs for reading computer formats. The phone will not be able to recognize some computer formats, even if there is some program, because its “iron part” will not allow it.

The touch screen of PDAs and communicators is vulnerable to all sorts of scratches, and other defects.

Yes, it is, the touch screen is a very sensitive and fragile thing, and even contact with the keys can become fatal. But all problems have a solution, and the touch screen is no exception. A special protective film is applied over the touch screen, protecting it from scratches and damages. In addition, it makes the screen more rigid, which simplifies the work. The protective film is made of a special material and has a structure similar to a magnet on one side, so it is glued to the screen without any glue-type aids. In addition, the film is designed for reusable cleaning with an unsuccessful application. Upon contact with water, the sticky part loses its ability to facilitate the washing process, but 30-60 seconds after it is dried, the properties of the film are restored. Usually one film is enough for the lifetime of a PDA or communicator. If you use the screen of a PDA or a communicator without a protective film, then most likely there will be scratches on it that will make it difficult to recognize the pressures or make an area around you that is generally not susceptible to any kind of pressing. Therefore, it is recommended to stick a protective film immediately after buying a device with a touch screen.

When pressing, you need only use the stylus and never touch the screen with your fingers.

Different devices are designed for different types of pressing, but when working with most of them it is recommended to use the stylus. The stylus has a thin tip, thanks to which you can get to even the thinnest points on the screen and do not worry about the recognition of pressing. The interface of devices intended by pressing the stylus often contains small elements and a more concise view. Assumed to push the finger – on the contrary, have larger controls and a more “bloated” appearance. This difference is caused only by the difficulties when you press your finger, because it is thicker than the tip of the stylus and for 100% recognition requires more space on the screen.

Communicator differs from the PDA only in the presence of phone functions.

Yes, it is, the communicator is a PDA with phone functions. But besides this there is one more “but” PDA – an earlier type of devices and they are usually weaker than modern communicators, moreover, they are often installed with older versions of Windows Mobile. Currently, the release of PDA is almost not produced. But even a PDA can have phone functions, when buying a special card that is inserted into the flash card slot, it is possible to integrate the phone functions.

Using PDAs and communicators, you can remotely control devices.

Quite right, some computer programs support this option, for example, you can control music played on PC using Bluetooth. Or to control any device that is controlled via an IR signal (used in consoles), the TV is no exception. But all these functions require the installation of additional software on your PDA or communicator. In rare cases – on the computer. In addition to Bluetooth and infrared control, there is a third way – direct cable connection, this method poses some difficulties due to the fact that the cable limits the radius of the PDA or communicator, but this method transmits information at a higher speed, which is sometimes important.

PDA and communicators can be upgraded to a newer version of Windows Mobile.

You can, but not all, the manufacturer most often supports the update, but in older models of this function, unfortunately not. Information on the possibility of updating is found in the instructions for using the device. The update is carried out at the service center. But at your own risk and the user of the device has the right to install a new system without the participation of the service center. But most often this will lead to a loss of warranty on the device. At the moment the latest is Windows Mobile 6.5. But there are already reports of the seventh version of the OS. The versions differ in interface and functionality, if 6.0 and 6.5 are improvements, then WM 2003 and WM6.0 are fundamentally different systems. Between them a large interval of time and no less list of fundamental changes. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase devices with the possibility of updating the OS in the future, this will ensure that you will not be able to change the PDA or the communicator only because of the release of the new OS.

In addition to a wide panorama of the possibilities, we get an even wider and diverse panorama of glitches.

On the average, WM devices work quite stably and do not cause censures. But unlike simple phones where only two things can break: the phone and the battery, we do get quite a complicated task to determine the malfunctions. But if you follow the recommendations for handling the PDA and communicators, the likelihood that something will break the most miserable. Nevertheless, the battery can make itself felt, it’s just that from old age it can remind you of its age by rebooting the device or switching it off completely for a while, fast discharge and charging is also a sign of its malfunction. But in new batteries there is a share of pleasant, nickel is gone in the past and now it is not necessary to create a training ground for training battery-recruits, after buying it is enough to just charge it once and use it in normal mode.

Some programs can instantly discharge the battery from 100% to 0.

Immediately this is loudly stated, but some programs that work from the moment the device is turned on and before it turns off, for example changing the interface can shorten the operating time after a full recharge. There are even possible cases when some programs shorten the work time from three days to 12 hours, so do not install as much as possible just so that it would be installed. It must be remembered that all these programs are also powered by a battery. The most amount of energy is eaten by programs that change the interface, as they work all the time and not infrequently add functions of animated screensaver (background) and other lotions, which very much discharges the battery. The second place is for plug-ins (add-on extensions) for the Today screen, they also work from on and off but unlike programs that change the interface they have more modest functionality and fewer unnecessary things. Therefore, if your device has a reduced life span after recharging – do not rush to throw out the battery, review the list of installed programs and exclude unnecessary.

Using a PDA or a communicator, you can use icq or visit sites.

Yes, that’s right, WM has advanced capabilities with respect to the Internet, it is possible to install popular modern browsers adapted for them. Some devices can establish secure connections and use some of the protocols of a personal computer. Also, clients like icq have their own version adapted for WM and also have a functional similar to the original. Simply put, PDAs and communicators are not inferior to the PC in relation to the Internet and even surpass it, because they are portable and compact, they can use wireless communication with the Internet.

Fall is 100% death for PDA and communicator.

Indeed, this is almost the right death, but there is a chance of a fall by the edge, with a maximum threat – jerk impulse, and a cracked body as consequences, but if the parts inside are not fixed, it is unlikely that the device will ever work again. But if the fall will be screened down, the chance of death is really close to 100%. Therefore it is advisable to buy a strong strap and wrap it around your arm, or simply to carry the device in a case, this will significantly soften the impact and reduce the chance of breakdown, because to restore such a device is not a cheap deal, sometimes it is more profitable to just buy a new one.

Smartphones are smart, but they have limitations compared to WM devices.

Partially – yes. The platform of the regular phone is s40, and the smartphone – s60 from this it follows that the smartphone is just an improved phone, but nevertheless it has some kind of OS – Symbian OS which recognizes a specific format for it * .sis. Symbian OS allows smartphones to climb the ladder above simple phones, but this does not make them so functional and capable as WM devices. This is still the whole telephone system, in which there are clear limitations.

Most smartphones do not have a memory processor and graphics card.

As mentioned above, smartphones are just advanced phones, so most often such concepts are not applicable to them, although in new models these devices knock out a line with the frequency of the processor. But even a powerful processor will not allow to reach the Symbian OS of the same results that WM reached.

Smartphones are less fragile and more reliable than PCs or communicators.

Since the smartphone is a step below the WM devices, it often lacks a touch screen, which reduces its fragility. Just as it was mentioned above by phones, and the smartphone is just an improvement, or the phone breaks down, or the battery. In other words, due to the lack of a more powerful “base”, the smartphone is less fragile and more reliable, but as a price for reliability – limited functionality.

Communicators will displace all other communication devices.

At the moment, such a prospect is unlikely, since the cost of the communicator is at a fairly high level for the average consumer. Not everyone has a desire to deal with the OS and not everyone wants to overpay for functions that he does not need. Therefore, most likely, there will be something improved, more solid, but so far this option is a smartphone, although the phone is not inferior to the requirements of the average consumer. Therefore, at the moment it is difficult to say who will disappear, and who will remain, but the fact that the communicator is the undisputed leader in technology does not cause any doubt. But the fact that phones with minimal functionality – “for communication” will always be in demand too, is undeniable. The way out of this situation will be the development of the general level of human knowledge, and as a consequence, even Grandmother will be able to turn on the music with one hand and sit in a comfortable rocking chair enjoying her favorite performer. Or the categories “for communication” and “for games” will remain.
