Sleep of newborns and infants

The most common misconceptions about the sleep of newborns and infants.

The child will sleep better at night if you give him more milk during night and evening feeding or add porridge to the milk.

Pediatricians conducted an experiment. Children, in the milk of which they added rice porridge, did not sleep better than the rest. In fact, if a child goes to bed with a full stomach, then because of a feeling of heaviness or gas formation, he will sleep worse. Instead of increasing the amount of food you eat late in the evening, increase it in the morning, in the afternoon or around 5-6 hours. Good nutrition really has a beneficial effect on sleep, but only when done at the right time.

If the child “lingered late”, he will quickly fall asleep and sleep better.

When children stay up late, their bodies develop stress hormones, and they are not in a sleepy state, but in an overexcited state, it becomes more difficult to fall asleep. Such children also wake up more often at night. Set the sleep mode, and stick to it. The child should go to bed at the same time, only then he will quickly fall asleep and sleep better at night. To determine the optimal time for putting the baby to bed, observe it for a week, when signs of fatigue appear, the child yawns, rubs his eyes, gets irritated. This is the most favorable time, all procedures related to sleep should be started half an hour before.

Some children can do without daytime sleep.

All children under 1 year of age need a nap, only the duration can vary. Otherwise, children overwork, become irritable sleep restlessly. Daytime sleep should occur regularly at the same time, it should be preceded by a small preparation, so to speak, to set the tone. For example, reading a book, darkening in a room.

When children reach the age of 2-3 months, they sleep all night.

At the age of 3 months, breast-feeding, babies can wake up every 3-5 hours, and those who are fed a mixture – every 6 hours. When children are cold, hot, hungry, they wake up immediately. This is their protective mechanism of survival. Only starting from 6 months, children can sleep without interruption for 5-6 hours in a row, but not all. The correct decision on your part will be to set a regular sleep time in accordance with the natural rhythm of the child’s activity.

Never let a child fall asleep in your arms, as he will not learn to fall asleep alone.

The baby’s body is arranged so that it relaxes and falls asleep after eating, and while being with mom, he feels safe. This is normal when the newborn falls asleep in your arms. But, starting at the age of 6 weeks, wake up the baby a little before putting it in the crib. Which means a little. It is enough that he just opened his eyes. This will provide the child with the experience of falling asleep on their own.
