In the struggle for the beauty and health of teeth, a man came up with how to install artificial roots in the mouth. They consist of zirconium or titanium and are attached to the upper or lower jaw. Dental implants are a kind of foundation, on which then fasten either crowns or dentures.
The modern history of this technique dates back to 1947, when it was proved that intraosseous implants in principle can function. This technique has obvious advantages – there is a lost tooth or support for the prosthesis without affecting adjacent teeth.
However, the method has its own contraindications, so the decision to implant is taken by the dentist after careful examination of the patient. The technique is still unusual, it gives very painful results. Doubts of people marked the beginning of several myths about implantation of teeth. Dental implantation is an extremely complex operation.
From a technical point of view, the operation of installing an intraosseous implant (as correctly called this procedure) is very simple. It can be compared with such a household procedure as screwing a screw or bolt into a wall. Any of us at least once in my life came across a similar task. It’s very simple – a drill with a drill creates a hole, slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw. Then he screwed himself with a screwdriver. Is it difficult? And on the screw it is already possible to hang any design. Of course, in the situation with the intraosseous implant, this does not always happen, but often everything looks exactly the same.
Implantation is a terrible procedure, which is accompanied by heavy bleeding.
Doctors say that some types of implants are generally placed without scalpels, incisions, blood and other terrible attributes of classical surgery. Most of the implants require small incisions of the oral mucosa, with little or no blood.
Implantation is a very painful procedure.
Today in stomatology such preparations are used for carrying out of local anesthesia, which allow completely to hide painful sensations. Sometimes only the feeling of touch remains. It can be argued that the removal of the tooth will be much more unpleasant than the installation of a new metal root.
Implantation lasts a long time.
In the classical case, implant installation lasts from 10 to 15 minutes.
This is a very expensive procedure.
Of course, the procedure itself is not free at all. However, if we consider it as one of the methods for the treatment of toothlessness (adentia), then its relative cheapness becomes clear. For example, if a patient does not have a tooth, this defect can be corrected by installing a bridge structure resting on adjacent teeth. As a result, it will take three units of cermets for 4-5 thousand rubles and depulpation of two healthy teeth to 2 thousand rubles. The cost of the procedure is about 17 thousand rubles. But over time, the bridge will have to be removed and changed to a new one, which again will require investments. In addition, the old supporting teeth will also need to be grinded again. As a result, the total investment will double, but that’s not all. The construction will change with wear and tear, the third prosthesis will cost even more. But the tooth on the implant will cost about 25 thousand rubles, which is clearly more profitable.
Implants rarely take root.
This statement was once true, but those times are long past. At the very dawn of the history of implantology, what happened in the 50-60’s, implants really did not take root. But even then the percentage of successful operations was quite high, most implants successfully osteointegrated. However, the technology has improved, and the number of successful operations has increased markedly. Today, in most dental clinics, numbers in the 96-99% range are being announced. Thus, the risk of being in the group of those who are unlucky is quite low.
Implants have a short lifespan, they will quickly fall out.
After implantation, implants can last a long time. Doctors considered an excellent result of a period of 10 years or more. However, this estimate is relative, since some prostheses can stand up to 20 years, and others – serve only 3-5 years. Many factors influence the service life, in each specific case the patient is told what he should count on. The exact life time of the implant will not be told by any doctor. Stable work is affected by proper prosthetics, it is worth talking about the quality of the crown and its installation. Even an ideally installed implant requires periodic preventive examination. The doctor removes the infection, which the toothbrush can not remove in principle. So in case of successful installation and observance of preventive norms the implant can remain and for all life.
After the implant is installed, health problems will begin.
Doctors say that they did not meet anything like this in their practice. Do not describe such cases in the special literature. You can only talk about complications of a local nature. It can be hematomas in the postoperative period, bruising, temporary sensitivity disorder in the ternary nerve region, inflammation in the implant placement zone, and rejection is rare. However, in spite of everything, such complications are reversible. So implant installation is no more dangerous procedure than any other medical invasive. If this simple operation will be done by experienced professionals, the risks are minimized.
It is better not to install implants with older patients.
The upper age bar, after which this operation can not be carried out, simply does not exist. Doctors put the prosthesis to patients after 70 and after 80 years. In this case, usually put a mini-implants, with which to fix a removable denture. As a result, this will allow not only to fix it firmly, but also to reduce the dimensions. With such a prosthesis it will be much more convenient and more pleasant to chew and get a taste sensation.
Implants should be placed somewhere abroad or in a large city, in the province they can not do this.
This myth is quite common in small towns. If there is money and time, then why not fly to Europe for such an operation? They chuckle at those who go for such a simple operation to another country. It is worth paying attention to domestic clinics. Today, the training of specialists, equipment and supplies is already in line with European standards, but prices are still available to our citizens. It is worth remembering that implants must be cleaned and serviced, and do not go to another city for the sake of this. Especially the clinic can disappear without a trace, and after all the spare parts can be quite rare. So do not create a problem for yourself, this operation can and should be addressed to the nearest good dental clinic with a proven staff.
There are no contraindications to implantation.
Although the method is considered convenient, it still has a number of contraindications. We are talking about people with severe forms of periodontal disease, blood and heart diseases, central nervous system, diabetes and cancer. It turns out that every tenth person has some contraindications. It is not recommended to put implants also to people smoking or abusing alcohol.
Implants are made from titanium.
Titanium alloys are most commonly used in this connection. Used as a pure metal, and in an alloy with vanadium and aluminum. However, implants are also made from zirconia. This substance has a clear cosmetic advantage, since titanium can be visible through the shell. Only here, zirconia is less stable and is more complex for further processing. That’s why they are infrequent. Now we are searching for even more perfect biocompatible alloys, in particular, titanium-zirconium is being tested.
