Handball

Handball

(from him hand – “hand” and ball – “ball”) – team game with the ball. The competition is held indoors or outdoors (size – 40×20 m, gates 3×2 meters) between two teams of 7 for 7 or 11 for 11 players. For the game use a round inflatable ball, the size of which is 58-60 cm in circumference for men and 54-56 cm for women. The weight of the ball is from 425 to 475 g (for men’s teams) or from 325 to 375 g (for women’s teams).

The game consists of two halves of 30 minutes each with a break between them of 10 minutes. The goal of the match is to throw the maximum possible number of balls into the opponent’s goal, trying not to stand behind the line limiting the 6-meter space in front of the gate. The initial throw is made from the center of the site in any direction. Evaluate the actions of the players two judges.

According to scientists, games like handball, were known in ancient times. Mention of them can be found in the “Odyssey” of Homer, and in the treatises of the ancient physician Claudius Galena, and in the poems of the famous Minnesinger Walter Von der Vogelweide.

Handball

Some researchers argue that modern handball was created by Danish football players around the end of the nineteenth or early twentieth century, so as not to interrupt training in the winter. In the game, conducted indoors, involved 6 players and the goalkeeper, and the ball should be passed only by hand.

And in 1890 in the Czech Republic was quite popular ball game, called “Khazen” (from the Czech “throw”, “throw”), boiled down to an unregulated throwing and catching the ball. However, the official date of the birth of handball is considered to be 1898 – it was then that in one of the real schools in the Danish town of Ordrup, the teacher of physical culture Holger Nielsen offered his pupils a new kind of ball game – handball (from him hand – “hand” and ball – “ball “).

After nearly 20 years – in 1917 – a Berliner Max Heyzer combined the virtues of the two above mentioned games by creating handball. In 3 years the first games for the Cup and Germany’s handball championship took place, and in 1926 handball was recognized as an international sport. The International Amateur Handball Federation (IAGF), which included 11 countries, was founded in Amsterdam in 1928 (lasted until 1944), in 1936 handball was recognized as an Olympic sport, and included in the program of the XI Olympics in Berlin. The International Handball Federation, established in 1946, approved the program for the development of this sport, scheduled the timing of the world championships with the participation of male and female teams.

The number of players in the handball team at all times was 7×7.

This is not quite true. Initially, the team really consisted of seven players, but in 1946 the International Handball Federation approved the holding of world championships in this sport with the participation of male and female teams 11×11. Later, the world championships in handball were held every 4 years, until 1966, when the last world championship on handball 11×11 took place. In our time handball in 7×7 format firmly holds the palm of the championship at all major competitions.

At first only women played handball.

This sport was really created for women, but at the 1936 Olympics (Berlin), men’s teams took part in handball competitions. Women’s teams were able to participate in the Olympics only in 1976 (Montreal).

First handball championships were held in Europe, and only then – world championships.

This is not true. World championships for this sport have been held since 1936 (for men) and since 1976 (for women). And European championships for men’s and women’s teams were first held in 1994, and have since been held regularly every two years under the auspices of the European handball federation (EHF).

Play handball only in the hall.

In fact, there is a variety of this sport – beach handball. The name speaks for itself – this kind of game takes place in the open air, sometimes on the shore of a pond or on a sports ground.

Beach handball is just entertainment.

Indeed, in the last century there were not even national teams for this sport. However, the game, which takes place in the open air, is developing rapidly, gaining more and more fans and, according to experts, has every chance to be soon included in the program of the Olympics.

Handball rules were developed in 1896.

This is not quite true. The new competition rules (reducing the size of the ball, introducing the rules of “three steps” and “three seconds”) were developed only in 1923, 3 years after the handball competitions held in Berlin. The above innovations, according to experts, contributed to improving the technique of the game.

Russia learned about handball only after the revolution.

Wrong opinion. The ancestor of the national handball – the Czech Khazen – appeared in Kharkov back in 1909, and was actively cultivated as one of the kinds of gymnastic games in the “Falcon” society. And in 1914 Dr. EF Maly developed quite detailed and clear rules of handball, and many of them were used to create international rules for this sport. In fact, it was the national handball that was the first complete version of this game in the world.

In the Olympics most often the first places in handball are Danes or athletes from Germany.

This is not true. Athletes from Denmark became the winners of the Olympic Games three times (and it was the women’s team), from Germany (later – GDR) – twice, but in the coin box of handball players from the USSR (later – the CIS and Russia) – 6 gold medals.

The left-hander can not play handball.

Maybe, more than that, he is quite capable of becoming an Olympic champion. A concrete example – Igor Vasiliev, who became the champion of the Olympic Games in 1992, in 1993 – the world champion, in 1994 – took the second place at the European Handball Championship.

In Russia they do not like to play handball, especially women.

Maybe this game is not as popular as, say, football or basketball. However, do not forget that it was the USSR national team that most often took first place at the Olympic Games. And the Soviet women’s team in the history of handball is the most titled – after all, athletes have twice won at the Olympics and three times – at the world championships in this sport.

Draw in handball is common.

Indeed, a draw in this game is permissible. However, if the elimination tournament is held and the results are equal, one additional time is assigned or, if necessary, two halves consisting of two periods of 5 minutes each with a one-minute break between them. If the match and in this case leads to a draw result – the team punches a penalty (5 shots with a 7-meter mark).

After the final whistle, the referee will not subject the athletes to punishment.

If there has been a violation of rules or unsportsmanlike behavior prior to or at the time of the final signal, the referee will punish the guilty player even if a signal is given about the end of the halftime (game).

In handball, any field player can replace the goalkeeper and vice versa – the goalkeeper can act as a fielder.

This is true, but it should be remembered that the form of the goalkeeper differs from the form of the players of both teams and the equipment of the goalkeeper of the opposing team. Therefore, in the case of the aforementioned substitution, the player will first have to change.

If there are fewer than five players on one handball team, the game automatically stops.

No, even if there are fewer than five players on the court, the match can be continued. The decision on the final stoppage of the game is taken by the judges.
