Families of Haiti

In the differences between the traditions and cultures of Haiti, one can simply get confused, because the customs of almost all countries of the world are collected here. However, nevertheless, the combination of African and French cultures is most clearly expressed, and otherwise Creole culture.

The population of Haiti was originally formed from slaves, who were brought from different countries, who had a single religion – belief in higher powers, voodoo, witchcraft.

Families of Haiti

Over time, more civilized countries contributed to the social structure of Haiti, but Voodoo remained for the residents almost the only religion. Despite such characteristics of culture, Haitians are distinguished by kindness and hospitality.

They treat foreigners very well and are always ready to come to the rescue or answer the questions asked. They are very sociable, but it is advisable not to touch on the topic of family affluence when talking, because for Haitians this is the most painful issue, especially if it comes from a stranger or a foreigner.

Usually, Haitian families are clans or large families that are called “lacquer”. This word can also be called the buildings or structures in which a family or clan resides. True, recently the number of members in the family is getting smaller, and the family mainly consists of parents and their children.

Almost all families in Haiti live in very small houses that consist of one or two rooms. There are no special amenities in these houses: there is no electricity and running water, mostly used stoves that work on natural materials – charcoal. However, even such difficult conditions will not make the Haitians lose heart, they will still hope that good times await them.

сель The basis of the economy of Haiti is agriculture, and in rural areas men do the hardest work. Women, however, stay at home and look after the household, and can also collect fruits for sale in local markets.

In poor families, who are quite numerous in Haiti, children are also attracted to work on farms, or sent as servants to richer homes. In general, in any family any form of earnings is used, each member of the family tries to contribute to improve the financial situation. Usually, all financial issues are resolved jointly between the spouses.

In poor families of Haiti, there is such a form of relationship between men and women when they simply live together. They agree among themselves on the conduct of general financial affairs, share household duties and other work among themselves. Such relations are called “plas”.

However, these relations are not recognized by the church or the state and are not considered a form of marriage, but are widespread throughout the country. This is due to the fact that it is necessary to spend considerable money for the wedding, and since the unemployment rate in the country is very high, poor families are not able to carry out normal marriages. As a consequence, we have to create such “family” relations, in order to somehow solve financial difficulties.

Many young people in Haiti leave rural areas and try to build their lives in large cities. However, this is not always the best option, because there are not enough jobs in cities and there is a big competitive selection on them.

In most cases, these young people settle in poor areas and are looking for any kind of work to feed themselves. Much of it returns to its relatives, because in agriculture there are more opportunities to always be in business.

Any events in the family and in society are always accompanied by various rituals, which are arranged in honor of the “spirit.” In general, the whole life in Haiti goes under the cult of voodoo, that is, the worship of witchcraft. Rituals are accompanied by birthdays, deaths, other calendar events, as well as weddings, reaping and many others.

Some of these rituals are designed to distract from the family trouble, trouble, attract patrons, heal from various diseases. All rituals are accompanied by dances and songs using drums and even with animal sacrifices.

Another way of referring to the gods is drawing of cloths or flags, on which the requests and wishes of the person are represented. Drawing such flags takes a lot of time, and they are painted with great care. Besides, they are even a subject of collectibles for today.

Many Haitian holidays, especially the main ceremonies coincide with Catholic holidays and many Catholic churches have already included in their ceremonies some folk rites, traditional music and dances. However, Protestant churches do not agree with such a behavior of Catholics and categorically against recognizing such traditions.

Voodoo rituals and culture have become firmly rooted in the social life of Haitians. Sometimes even any work of the whole family is accompanied by music, singing, and some of the family members can use the fight of the tomts to make the work faster and more fun.

With regard to education, it is natural that rural families are distinguished by a narrow level of development, because they do not have the opportunity to send their children to school, for the reason that they do not have enough financial resources.

Only children from wealthy families can get a normal education. If you meet a Haitian who speaks French fluently, it means that a person has graduated. The main language of Haiti is Creole.

Having fallen on any Haitian celebration, where all the fun dance to the drums and sing cheerful energetic songs, it’s impossible to think that they have not the easiest life.

However, Haitians do not make a cult out of their poverty and do not pay attention to it. They believe that the higher powers, the spirits they worship sooner or later will make their life better by seeing what forces are being applied to convey their requests.
