Dolphins

Dolphins

are marine mammals animals that belong to the suborder of toothed whales. They are found in the seas and oceans, as well as in rivers that have access to the sea. Feed, as a rule, crustaceans, mollusks, fish, and some do not disdain sea turtles and birds.

Dolphins

There are more than thirty species of dolphins in the world, the most common of which are: killer whales (Orcinus orca), dwarfish dolphins (Globicephala), gray dolphins (Grampus griseus), Chinese lake dolphins (Lipotes vexillifer) blondes (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops), and others. Dolphins can not stay under water for a long time, so they periodically float to the surface, beyond the air. Males are usually larger than females, they are easily distinguished from each other by the fin – the male has a dorsal fin higher.

The period of pregnancy of dolphins, depending on the specific species, lasts from 12 to 16 months. Born, basically, there is always only one calf, which is about two years old is next to the mother and feeds on her milk. Life expectancy of dolphins on average is 20-25 years, but there are cases when some individuals survived to 50 years.
About dolphins, not a few all kinds of legends are composed, feature films and books are written. Among other things, there are not a few myths about these animals. Let’s consider some of them.

Dolphins save drowning people.

Perhaps this is really so. But scientists are rather skeptical about this statement. They are more inclined to think that these animals just love to play, pushing the object with their noses. Also, they have a natural reflex connected with the birth of the baby: the newborn dolphin pack “pushes” to the surface so that it can breathe air. In addition, the animal must, firstly, realize that a person is actually drowning, and secondly, to figure out how to save it.

This is a very clever animal.

On this account, scientists have been, are, and will, of course, always be heated debates. Some believe that dolphins are superior to humans in their mental development. Others argue that the mental faculties of these mammals can only be compared with dogs and chimpanzees. In general, opinions are divided, however, “ordinary” people (not scientists) who ever contact these animals, say that dolphins understand everything, just can not say.

The dolphins do not hear anything.

These animals have an inner ear, thanks to which they can hear well under water. In addition, their hearing is very sharp and they tend to hear sounds in the range from 16 hertz to 280 kilohertz. While in humans the threshold of audibility does not exceed 20 kilohertz.

The dolphins have good eyesight.

About some species of dolphins so you will not say. For example, a dolphin “susu”, living in the Indus River of Pakistan, is blind. Yes, and for what his eyesight, if the water in this river is muddy and you can not see anything in it. How then does he live at all? Thanks to the natural sonar, that is, the echolocator. With the help of this “adaptation”, dolphins “feel” everything that surrounds them, and can accurately determine the location of a particular object.

Dolphins

Dolphins help fishermen catch fish.

It is common knowledge that friendly relations are usually formed between a man and a dolphin. And people engaged in fishing, “use” this friendship “with the mind.” For example, several fishermen go into the sea and begin to be sticks on the water. Dolphins, attracted by this noise, flock to the shore, thereby “pushing” the schools of fish ahead of them. Thus, the fish enters the fishing nets, and the dolphins swim back into the sea, but return again, when they hear the familiar noise.

Dolphins can always recognize a particular person.

This is not a true statement. If a dolphin met a man who is on land, he does not recognize the same person in the water.Conversely, having met a person in the water, the dolphin does not recognize it on land. So they are arranged.

Dolphins do not understand human speech. It will be more correct to say that they do not hear the speech of a person. This is due to the fact that dolphins seem to be “tuned” to their own wave (frequency), on which they communicate with each other. Therefore, in dolphinariums, instead of voice, a whistle is used – for dolphins it is more understandable. But they hear the music perfectly and even feel it. Also, these animals are well aware of hand movements and facial expressions.

These mammals are able to heal a person from all diseases.

This is not entirely true. For example, a paralyzed person after dolphin therapy still can not live a full life, but his mental (moral) state will improve much. Most often, dolphins manage to heal people who have various nervous diseases or deep depression. How they do it – is still unknown. Scientists believe that the whole thing is in the special ultrasound radiation that comes from the animal. When a dolphin communicates with a healthy person, then he releases a quiet snapping; If the animal feels that the person is sick – it starts to rumble. After such “sessions” the dolphin is very tired and tries to be alone to gain strength. Therefore, dolphin therapy is increasingly in demand, and this is an unreasoned fact.

Dolphins

Dolphins are used in military service.

Yes, it really is. Especially often these animals were used during military operations. The dolphins acted as scouts, and even as assassins. Now they, basically, act as guardians of sea borders.

Dolphins are very aggressive creatures.

Too much said. Of course, do not forget that the dolphin is an animal, and all animals are characterized by aggressive behavior, especially in the period of sexual attraction. It is better not to fall into the way of loving dolphins – aggressiveness will manifest itself to the fullest! Also, if a dolphin finds that he is bored with communicating with a particular person, he too can show his discontent. In other cases – it’s pretty sociable and peace-loving animals.
