Disney

It is said that creativity and business are poorly compatible with each other. But Walt Disney showed how you can have both of these talents. Only here is the secret of how to be both a good wizard and a grasping capitalist, Disney took with him.

Walter Elias Disney appeared on December 5, 1901, in a family of poor Irish immigrants. The boy’s father was very liberal in matters of raising children. In his opinion, the best science for them will be occupational therapy, so he prepared the heirs for future survival in a harsh world. This approach was experienced in full and the youngest of four sons, Walter.

He had to help his unlucky father first on the farm, then distributing newspapers, producing fruit jelly and even trading in trains. About toys then there was no question. The only thing that somehow brightened up the boy’s childhood was drawing. At 7 years the future millionaire even earned 5 cents, selling a portrait of a neighbor’s horse to her master.

Walt dreamed of making drawings similar to those in comic books. But he simply did not have free time for this. The cruel father believed that all artists were idlers and punished Walt for his hobby. Despite this, the teenager found strength to go against his father’s will and entered the Institute of Arts in Chicago. There he realized that he had the talent to draft and manage projects, much more than to work on the documents themselves.

In 1918, 17-year-old Walt tried to join the army, but he was denied because of a young age. Then, to spite all, Disney volunteered for the Red Cross. The whole year he spent in Europe, serving as a driver of an ambulance in France. In 1919, Disney becomes an artist in an advertising agency, where he begins to shoot his first commercials.

There, Walt meets Abe Iverck, who became his business partner. At first the pair opened a joint studio, where with the help of a second-hand camera they created two-minute films for local cinemas. Then the first animation studio Laugh-O-Gram was opened, which, incidentally, soon went bankrupt. But the animation has already captivated Walt Disney.

After a couple of years, Disney goes to Hollywood. There, together with his brother Roy, he creates a small animation studio The Walt Disney Company. She settled down in the uncle’s garage, and money for brushes, paints and lighting was borrowed from the same Roy. The first stunt film was called “Alice’s Day at Sea”, the character of Carroll’s book “Alice in Wonderland” became the hero. Gradually begins to form the very same classic style of cartoons. But to create even a small film required a director, actor, sound engineer, music editor and screenwriter. Two brothers were able to combine this in themselves.

In 1927 the film “Rabbit Oswald” became popular. For a year, Disney created 26 series about the adventures of this hero. However, before the start of the new season, the animator suddenly found that his four artists had gone to the distributor, who now decided to continue the series himself, without the participation of Disney. It turned out that this was the way the contract was drawn up – the rights to the cartoon hero were owned not by Disney himself. That cruel lesson has become useful, since the animator has been watching that the rights to his heroes belonged only to him.

In 1928, the mute Mortimer appeared in the silent film “Mad Airplane”. However, the cartoon was not very successful, because at that time began to appear sound films. With the government order for training films, the studio postponed the development of the Mortimer series. However, soon they returned to their energetic hero. In 1928, the animated film “Steamer Willy” appeared. He was the first for Disney with a synchronous sound, and the main character was voiced by the creator himself. So the famous Mickey Mouse was born.

In 1929-1938, Disney filmed over 70 series of “Naive Symphonies”, where the mouse acquired a bunch of friends – Minnie’s girlfriend, Goofy’s and Pluto’s dogs, the proud and harmful but pretty Donald duckling. But the love of the audience belonged to Mickey. He became the most popular and replicated cartoon character in the world. Even Hitler declared Mickey Mouse an enemy of the Reich. Production of 8-minute films went on a conveyor, the studio was even nicknamed a mouse factory. And Disney is so related to his main character that he voiced it for 20 years.

In the autumn of 1934, Disney began working on a script for the film based on the fairy tale Grimm about Snow White. December 21, 1937 premiere of the first ever full-length animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. The film was waiting for a huge success, critics’ reviews and big gatherings. Over time, Disney began to create color cartoons. And again it was required to learn something new.

Background specialists and color consultants appeared at the studio. Disney continues to shoot his feature films, which are considered family. This is the “Pinocchio” (1940), “Dambo” (1941), “Bambi” (1942). And in 1950 the light saw “Cinderella”. Disney himself begins to engage in production activities, first he was engaged in colored educational tapes, then carried away by adventures designed for children.

Walt Disney expanded the scope of its activities, dreaming to transfer the tale from the screens to life. Especially for this in California, a piece of land was purchased for the construction of a grand amusement park. In it, Disney invested 17 million dollars, but these expenses paid off tenfold in the first years of the project.

In his time, Walt, a wonderful family man who devoted all his free time to his wife and children, realized that a place was needed where adults and children could rest. The first Disneyland opened in 1955, embodying the dream of a great animator. Soon, theme parks began to appear in other countries of the world, the company invested billions in them!

Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, leaving behind many plans. The animator himself voiced heroes in 122 cartoons, as a producer he directed the creation of 526 cartoons. The work of Disney is marked by a lot of film awards, including 26 Oscars.

Today The Walt Disney Company is almost the largest financial giants in the entertainment industry. The company employs more than 150 thousand people, its annual turnover exceeds $ 38 billion. The company’s capitalization exceeds 120 billion dollars.
