In the European part of Russia there are only 3 wild-growing species, in the Caucasus there are 6, a great variety is observed in Siberia.

The following species are best known: black and red currants. The difference between them is not only in the color of the berries, but also in the content in the leaves of the black currant of the fragrant essential oil, which lies in the glands of the lower surface of the foliage.

Gooseberries, also related to the genus of currants, were widely spread. The fruits of this family are very useful – in addition to eating from berries prepare compotes, jam, jelly, marmalade, syrups, liqueurs and even wine.

Although this plant is uncomplicated, it is simple at first sight and it is surrounded by a fair share of myths. Let’s figure out which of them is true, and what is fiction.

For Europeans, however, currant has long been used only as a medicinal plant. “Seen” the red currant gardeners of Europe only in the XV century, and black and even later – in the XVII-XVIII centuries. In North America, currant is not cultivated artificially. Not surprisingly, it was in our region (Russia, Ukraine) that plant breeders paid special attention to this plant, several varieties were created that were ideally suited for different regions.

The best black currant grows in Siberia.

This statement is true. Siberian varieties best show their dignity in the historical homeland. In the middle band, they can freeze even in insignificant frosts, the berries are born small, the yield becomes low.

Currants can be planted on any soil, and do not particularly care, because it is unpretentious.

Currant is actually a hardy plant, but to give berries you need to comply with certain requirements. For the red currant requires a lot of light, and for black – the abundance of moisture in the earth. Finding the same shrubs in the shade, without proper irrigation, will make the harvest truly symbolic.
