– genus of plants of the family Gooseberry. It includes about 150 species. The plant has become widespread, the main species grow in Europe, Asia and North America and South America. In the European part of Russia there are only 3 wild-growing species, in the Caucasus there are 6, a great variety is observed in Siberia.
The following species are best known: black and red currants. The difference between them is not only in the color of the berries, but also in the content in the leaves of the black currant of the fragrant essential oil, which lies in the glands of the lower surface of the foliage.
Gooseberries, also related to the genus of currants, were widely spread. The fruits of this family are very useful – in addition to eating from berries prepare compotes, jam, jelly, marmalade, syrups, liqueurs and even wine.
Although this plant is uncomplicated, it is simple at first sight and it is surrounded by a fair share of myths. Let’s figure out which of them is true, and what is fiction.
When choosing the currant seedlings, it’s best to pay attention to the adults and the tallest ones.
In fact, the most important parts for the seedling of the currant are not the tops of the branches, but the bottom of the aboveground part and the roots. When choosing a seedling, it is necessary to pay attention to fresh plants that have a powerful root system. There is no difference what will be the length of the branches. Moreover, after planting the branches still have to be cut off. We must also take into account that the crop will appear on biennial branches, so do not choose seedlings older than this age.
Domestic varieties are inferior to foreign counterparts.
Both black and red currants are considered an indigenous Russian culture. In our locality, this berry is grown since the XI century. For Europeans, however, currant has long been used only as a medicinal plant. “Seen” the red currant gardeners of Europe only in the XV century, and black and even later – in the XVII-XVIII centuries. In North America, currant is not cultivated artificially. Not surprisingly, it was in our region (Russia, Ukraine) that plant breeders paid special attention to this plant, several varieties were created that were ideally suited for different regions.
The best black currant grows in Siberia.
This statement is true. Siberian varieties best show their dignity in the historical homeland. In the middle band, they can freeze even in insignificant frosts, the berries are born small, the yield becomes low.
Currants can be planted on any soil, and do not particularly care, because it is unpretentious.
Currant is actually a hardy plant, but to give berries you need to comply with certain requirements. For the red currant requires a lot of light, and for black – the abundance of moisture in the earth. Finding the same shrubs in the shade, without proper irrigation, will make the harvest truly symbolic.
Currant is well established on the lawn.
In fact, grass lawn will take away most of the moisture and nutrients from the currant bush. Therefore, the bush grows weak and will not yield a crop. It is better to plant a bush at a distance of not less than 70 cm from the lawn. It is desirable to cover the soil with mulch material or leave it open.
The currant bushes should be planted in an inclined position.
The slope of the bush during landing does not matter. It is important to cover the seedling by 5-7 cm from the position in which it used to grow.
The name of an unknown variety can be determined by experts on berries or photos.
Today there are hundreds of varieties of red and black berries, many of them, of course, have similar fruit. To determine the exact grade, specialists need to study in detail the entire bush, drawing attention to even the renal scales and the shape of the denticles of the leaves. It is impossible to make a conclusion only on a berry. Yes, there are some varieties of pink and white currants that an experienced connoisseur can successfully identify with berries, but this is unlikely for a redcurrant.
Black currants have only black berries.
No matter how funny it sounds, but it’s not. There are several varieties with green and brown berries.
White and red currants are different cultures.
In fact, white, pink and red currants are one and the same culture, and the color of berries is only a varietal feature. To make jelly, compotes, freeze it is better to use red berries, but for consumption in fresh form and for making wine – white.
Tea with black currant leaves is very useful.
The leaves of this shrub do contain a lot of salicylic acid. After a cup of tea, you can even sweat with it. However, not everyone is unconditionally helpful with such a recipe. If doctors have already forbidden the patient to use raspberries and aspirin, then it is better to refuse tea on currant leaves.
Currant is a very frail plant, often ill, unarmed before pests.
Any part of the bush contains a huge amount of nutrients and vitamins. It is no wonder that fungi and pests tend to join such a pantry. But the currant without a fight they do not give up. The leaves of some of its species are able to purposefully fight against infestations by the causative agent of powdery mildew of a section of their leaf. The plant destroys leaf cells, powdery mildew can not live in a dead environment, on this her attack ends.
To heal the currant from all at once the misfortunes should be in March to pour the bush with boiling water.
This tool is from the category of “people’s”, but there is no scientific proof of the effectiveness of such “treatment”. But there are cases when the bush received serious burns, and even the person who works with boiling water should be careful.
In case of occurrence on a black currant of branches with double plaque, it is enough to cut it off, and cuttings just in case to root.
With a swallow so easy to fight will not succeed, it will inevitably spread throughout the bush. At home, it is almost impossible to cure such a disease, it is forbidden to propagate a diseased shrub. The only effective means is the early uprooting of the diseased plant as a whole.
The most dangerous disease of red currant – colored convex patches on the leaves.
These ugly changes in plant leaves cause red-headed aphids. Although there are all the signs of the affected bush, this disease is undesirable, but not critical. The life of the bush does not threaten anything.
Currant successfully tolerates spring frosts.
Although spring cooling does not leave visible traces of frostbite on the bushes, it is the most frequent reason for the sudden decline in yield. This is especially critical for black currant. Subcooling is critical not particularly for buds, but for opened flowers and ovaries. If frosts are expected at the dacha, you should water the bushes at night and throw rags, nonwovens or film on them.
Currant is a common berry.
For some reason it is believed that they use this berry, because of its accessibility only commoners. Although currant is a component of exquisite delicacies from the British (Christmas pudding), the Frenchman (the famous liquor Cassis). In the family of Count L. Tolstoy there was a special dish – a black cupcake, in which there was grated black currant.
Currant is used as a fishing lure.
Really experienced fishermen use berries, including currants, and gooseberries for catching fish of the carp family, chub. In this case, long-term privatization is necessary.
