There are some professions that are not known to the general public. One of them is ballet. To disprove the myths, you need to go behind the scenes and talk with the artists themselves.
Many of our compatriots have never seen ballet at all, for the majority this art of dance is associated with Swan Lake, Volochkova, and Tsiskaridze. The great ballerinas of the past, the same Maya Plisetskaya, will be remembered by few.
Recently released the film “Black Swan” spurred interest in this art form. But the tape itself is filled with myths – in real life this can not be. Yes, and the producers created a beautiful fairy tale that in just one and a half years of training Natalie Portman learned to dance.
In fact, most of the movements for her were performed by a professional ballerina, who dances for more than 20 years. So what is ballet really like, is it not time to debunk the basic myths about it?
In the ballet of children lead parents, dooming to an unhappy life.
Many people think that people get into this art thanks to cruel parents, and the life of a dancer after thirty is actually over. What next – a scanty pension, oblivion and depression? In fact, everything is not so tragic. The ballet does come in childhood, but usually the training starts from 10 years. Until then, kids are usually engaged in dancing in studios. Of course, it is difficult to expect that at 10 years old the child can already deliberately choose a profession. However, practice shows that none of the artists about their choice then does not regret. As for the pension, the average age of the dancing dancers is 25-27 years. They begin their professional activity at the age of 18, whereas their peers are just beginning to learn something. The heyday of the career is 30 years. After all, sadly, you have to switch to age parties. But what is the rule without exceptions? Remember, I can accept the Mariinsky Ulian Lopatkin. At 38, she was still almost the best Odette-Odile. And artists start receiving retirement after 20 years of work in the corps de ballet and after 15 years of solo performances. So begin to receive such benefits can 36 year old artist. But of those who actively dance, up to 40 years, no one is going to leave the profession. And life at this age does not end at all. Most artists combine work with teaching in the university, so that when the time comes to leave the scene, life prospects will not fail to appear.
Ballet dancers have only their work in their heads.
This myth continues the previous one. In fact, many artists are quite versatile and interesting people. For example, in the “Russian Ballet” there were dancers who managed in parallel with work in the theater and also to study in the physics and mathematics faculty. Subordination of the profession happens, but more and more often artists understand that it’s not worth it to focus on work, but we need to try ourselves and in something else.
Ballerinas dance from morning till night, they have no personal life.
The schedule of artists is really exhausting. Rehearsals last for five hours, for which the dancers perform a lot of complex jumps. But it turns out that this has become the norm for them. Some even manage to dance in the evening in clubs. In the rest, artists live, not very different from other people. They communicate with each other, go to the movies, have families.
All ballerinas are emaciated anorexic.
It seems to many that the dancers are constantly on a diet and in McDonald’s they just can not be seen. Of course, the ballerinas are not magnificent, they are smart and slender girls. The average weight of these artists is slightly more than 40 kilograms, and the maximum does not exceed 50 kilograms. And the reason is not that the ballerinas will be bulky. Although we should not forget that white suits also increase the volume. The explanation is simple – the partner will be hard to lift and toss a swan, whose weight exceeds half a centner. The myth of gouty anorexic dancers was used in the movie “Black Swan”.In fact, anorexia is a terrible disease, which is accompanied by a poor state of health. A normal ballet dancer can not have such a thing, by definition, because the daily load does not allow her to relax. And you can forgive such cliches for Americans and their films, because this country never shone in the ballet, and the viewer got used to simplification there.
All the dancers are on a diet.
The terrible truth – ballet sometimes eat in McDonald’s. The fact is that physical loads on dancers are so high that calories just do not have time to stay in the body. So on a diet very few people sit. Another question is that you can not interrupt training for a long time and you just can not rest – the form will be gone in just a few days. That is why there is only one day off per week in the ballet. Every morning begins with a one-hour warm-up class, then there are rehearsals, and in the evenings a performance! Without a normal diet with meat, it is not easy to endure. Yes, and modern dancers can afford not to follow the diet even if only because those inclined to fullness are screened during the training.
In the ballet, there is a constant feud, often in the pointe shoes pour glass, cut pointes, tear the packs.
Actually, one can not say that in all theaters such a situation prevails. Eyewitnesses say that in the “Russian Ballet” there is a benevolent attitude of artists to each other, regardless of the position or status. And gossip and envy are ordinary human qualities. They are found in any collective.
All the ballerinas are gay.
First of all, it’s worth fixing, there are no “ballet dancers”, but there are ballet dancers or dancers. Indeed, in theaters, as in show business in general, much is solved through the bed. But do not consider all artists fans of same-sex love. There are, of course, and such. But the majority achieves everything with their talent and hard work. The environment of the ballet is very peculiar, especially for men. It can be assumed that the constant work at the mirror and the embracing of the dancers, who appear not by fairies, but by usual sweating women, are brought up by the same, “unconventional” gene. But the higher the status of the artist, the more attention to his personal life. So it seems that there are many gays in the ballet. Examples of Rudolf Nureyev, Vladimir Malakhov and David Holberg can confuse little boys who have just come to the ballet.
Dancers rarely have children.
This is not true, dancers often give birth, and sometimes at the peak of a career. But this situation still has to do with the present. For example, Plisetskaya said that earlier ballerinas were not allowed to retire from the creative life for at least a year. Today the situation has changed – the dancers manage to give birth and quickly return to the stage. For example, Svetlana Zakharova gave birth to a girl and two months later she returned to the theater, retaining her magnificent form. It is even said that the birth of a child gives a new dance to the dance, a special sound. And a vivid example of this is Ulyana Lopatkina.
After birth, it is impossible to restore the form.
As mentioned above, there are cases when, after a couple of months, the ballerina returns to the stage, and after three months she dances in the play. But it is very difficult – morally and physically. The main thing here is to overcome yourself, cross a barrier. Impossible in this respect, there is nothing.
There are not many men in ballet.
Given how little boys come to the ballet, they are even less produced. So men in this art really in great demand.
Ballet has a bad effect on health.
This, unfortunately, is true. Many artists complain about problems with the spine. This is especially expressed in men. The knees and ankle often fly, but this depends on the technique. It happens that artists leave the stage because of poor health even before the retirement.
Ballet is not popular with young people.
It is not worth talking about the unpopularity of this art form. And young people do go to the ballet less often than representatives of the older generation. The reason here including financial – regular visits to the idea of a thing not cheap. Yes, and the same “Black Swan” with Volochkova and Tsiskaridze, no, no, but contribute to the popularization of the dance.
